The Death Toll From Extreme Weather Is Becoming Clearer
In 2020, in the wake of Australia's Black Summer bushfires, Paddy Manning wrote Body Count: How Climate Change is Killing Us (Simon & Schuster, 2020). He spoke with the families and friends of victims of extreme weather events and told the human stories behind the statistics. In this Next Chapter, Manning looks at why the death toll attributed to climate change continues to be systemically underreported as well as the consequences of that disconnect.
From wildfires to tornados, heat waves to hurricanes, there seems barely time to process the last climate disaster before the next one is upon us. The World Meteorological Organization estimates there were 151 unprecedented extreme weather events last year alone. The US Federal Emergency Management Agency responded to a major weather-related disaster on average every four days in 2024.

First hurricane of 2025 forms. Track Hurricane Barbara and Tropical Storm Cosme's paths
The first hurricane of 2025 has formed in the Pacific off Mexico's west coast, with a second storm expected to reach minimal hurricane strength later today. The National Hurricane Center is currently tracking Hurricane Barbara and Tropical Storm Cosme. Both storms are projected to remain over open water and dissipate without threatening land. There will be no impact on the U.S. coastline. The eastern Pacific is already on its third named storm of the season, while nothing has yet developed in the Atlantic, where the first named storm will be Andrea. More: Is your name on this year's hurricane list? 2025 season leads with Andrea and Barry Hurricane Barbara formed early Monday as the first hurricane of 2025. Location: 152 miles southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico Maximum sustained winds: 75 mph Movement: northwest at 10 mph There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect for Hurricane Barbara. However, the NHC warns of swells that are capable of life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. "Gusty winds are likely along coastal areas of southwestern Mexico during the next day or so," the NHC forecast advisory states. The hurricane is expected to dissipate in the ocean by Tuesday. Location: 620 miles south-southwest of the southern tip of Baja, California Maximum sustained winds: 65 mph Movement: west-northwest at 6 mph There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect for Tropical Storm Cosme. NHC states there will also be no hazards affecting land. The storm is expected to dissipate in the ocean by Wednesday. The 2025 Pacific hurricane season began on May 15, two weeks earlier than the Atlantic season, which begins June 1. Both conclude on Nov. 30. The two seasons also differ in several key ways, including: Naming lists: Each basin uses its own set of rotating names, maintained separately by the World Meteorological Organization. Storm origins: Pacific storms typically form off the southwestern coast of Mexico, while Atlantic storms often develop in the Caribbean, the Gulf of America (the NHC label is 'Gulf of America') or off the west coast of Africa. Tracking agencies: While the NHC monitors both basins, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center takes over if storms move west past 140°W longitude. Storm behavior: Pacific storms often move westward into open ocean, posing less risk to land, whereas Atlantic storms are more likely to threaten the U.S., Caribbean or Central America. In addition to the two named storms currently in the Pacific, an area of low pressure is forecast to develop later this week south of southern Mexico. Environmental conditions appear conducive for some gradual development of this system, and a tropical depression could form late this week or over the weekend. Formation chance through 48 hours: low, near 0 percent Formation chance through 7 days: medium, 60 percent Texans should expect some hurricane activity this year. Earlier this spring, Colorado State researchers published a report with a state-by-state look at hurricane risk. In Texas, there is a 70% storm chance and 44% hurricane chance this year, as well as a 19% chance of a major hurricane tracking within 50 miles of the state, experts with Colorado State University have predicted. AccuWeather similarly forecasted a higher-than-average risk of direct impact in Texas. Their prediction is based on what forecasters call "analog" years. Last year, the first two tropical storms to make landfall in the U.S. both struck Texas — but the Lone Star State saw no further tropical activity for the rest of the season. Australia, Pacific rocked by ocean heatwaves in 2024
Ocean temperatures in the southwest Pacific reached fresh highs in 2024 as heatwaves struck more than 10 per cent of the world's marine waters. Long stints of extreme ocean heat were experienced by nearly 40 million square kilometres of the region last year, including the waters surrounding Australia, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has revealed. WMO secretary-general Celeste Saulo said ocean heat and acidification were together inflicting long-lasting damage on marine ecosystems and economies "It is increasingly evident that we are fast running out of time to turn the tide," she said. High ocean temperatures have been wreaking havoc on heat-sensitive coral reefs worldwide, with Australian authorities reporting the sixth mass bleaching event at the Great Barrier Reef in less than a decade. Warming on land was also higher than it had ever been in 2024, with Thursday's report from the United Nations weather and climate agency identifying temperatures around 0.48C above the 1991–2020 average across the region. Heatwaves were particularly acute in Western Australia, with the coastal town of Carnarvon reaching 49.9C in February and breaking existing temperature records by more than two degrees. The southwest Pacific assessment aligns with global temperature records being consistently broken as concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere reach fresh highs. Last year was the hottest on record and the first to surpass 1.5C warmer than pre-industrial times, the benchmark temperature under the Paris climate agreement. The global pact has not yet been breached as it refers to long-term trends but more warming is expected, with a separate WMO report predicting a 70 per cent chance the average temperature over the next five years will exceed 1.5C. The WMO regional report pre-dated Cyclone Alfred and the devastating flooding events Australia experienced in the first half of 2025 but captured above-average rainfall for the northern states in 2024. A sea level rise in the Pacific region that exceeds global averages was also recorded, threatening island communities living near the coast. Elsewhere in the region, Indonesia's glacier ice degraded 30 to 50 per cent compared to 2022. If melting continues at the same rate, the ice is on track to disappear entirely by 2026 or soon after. The Philippines was struck by twice as many cyclones as normal, with 12 storms hitting the country between September and November. Climate patterns also influenced the year's weather events, including El Nino conditions at the start of 2024 in the tropical Pacific ocean that weakened to neutral conditions by the middle of the year. Head of the federal Climate Change Authority Matt Kean said there was still "time to arrest this direction of travel to a hothouse destination" at an event in Sydney on Wednesday. "First, we should ignore the doubters whose main mission seems to be to prolong the life of fossil fuel industries," he said while delivering the Talbot Oration at the Australian Museum.
