In a display of power, Dr Zamani Saul has been re-elected unopposed as the African National Congress (ANC) provincial leader in the Northern Cape during the party's 10th elective conference.
Despite facing ongoing organisational and political challenges, Saul's uncontested re-election signals confidence in his leadership among his constituency in the province.
For the third time in a row, Saul's leadership was reaffirmed on Tuesday without opposition, highlighting a collective endorsement from party members.
Alongside Saul, the top five officials in the Northern Cape were also elected unopposed, further demonstrating a unified leadership team:
Deputy Provincial Chairperson: Bentley Vass
Provincial Secretary: Deshi Ngxanga
Deputy Provincial Secretary: Maruping Lekwene
Provincial Treasurer: Fufe Makatong
Saul, who also serves as the Northern Cape Premier, leads a province where the ANC holds approximately 49% support, underscoring the importance of strong and united leadership ahead of future elections.
Conference Theme
The conference was held under the theme: 'The year of renewal to make the ANC a more effective instrument of the people to achieve the vision of the Freedom Charter: The people shall govern! The people shall share in the country's wealth!'
During his speech on Tuesday night, Saul emphasised the importance of unity within the organisation and cautioned against divisions that can arise from electoral processes.
'There will always be conferences of the ANC, but our responsibility as leaders is to ensure a smooth transition in managing the organisation's politics and internal contradictions. Our first imperative is to build unity," he said.

Breakthrough in Sindiso Magaqa murder case: one accused pleads guilty

Sindiso Magaqa, a rising star within the ANC and former secretary-general of the Youth League, was seen as one of the more outspoken and reformist figures within the party at the time of his death. He was also a vocal critic of corruption. Image: Supplied Nearly eight years after the assassination of former ANC Youth League secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa, a key breakthrough in the long-running murder case has finally arrived. One of the four men charged with his killing, Sibusiso Ncengwa, has pleaded guilty in the Pietermaritzburg High Court, admitting to pulling the trigger in the 2017 shooting. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara confirmed that Ncengwa, who was charged alongside Sbonelo Myeza, Mlungisi Ncalane and Mbulelo Mpofana, admitted to the murder of Magaqa and several related crimes during court proceedings on 6 June 2025. His confession marks a pivotal moment in a case that has drawn national attention and exposed deep political tensions in KwaZulu-Natal. According to the NPA, Ncengwa submitted formal admissions in terms of Section 220 of the Criminal Procedure Act. These included admitting to the murder of Magaqa on 13 July 2017 in uMzimkhulu, the attempted murder of Jabulile Msiya, Nonsikelelo Mafa and Nceba Mazongolo, malicious damage to property involving the victims' vehicles, and unlawful possession of a firearm. The court found Ncengwa guilty based on his admissions. His sentencing is scheduled for 30 June 2025. Meanwhile, his co-accused, Myeza and Mpofana, will appear in court on 19 June 2025 for a new indictment following the separation of their trial from Ncengwa's. The fourth accused, Mlungisi Ncalane, has been declared unfit to stand trial and is currently admitted to a psychiatric facility. Ncengwa's detailed confession outlined the planning, coordination, and execution of the attack, implicating all the accused in a plot that has long been suspected to be politically motivated. He was also a vocal critic of corruption, particularly in local government structures in KwaZulu-Natal, and had begun to challenge maladministration in the uMzimkhulu municipality where he served as a councillor. His assassination in 2017 shocked the nation and deepened fears about the growing number of politically motivated killings in the province. Magaqa was shot multiple times in what police described as a "targeted hit" and succumbed to his injuries weeks later in a Durban hospital. At the time of his death, tensions within the ANC were high, with factional battles and contestation for positions often spilling over into violence. Many observers linked his murder to his anti-corruption stance and his efforts to expose irregularities in tender processes. Since 2017, the case has suffered from delays, threats to witnesses, and allegations of political interference. The guilty plea by Ncengwa is the first significant development in years, offering hope that justice may finally be within reach for Magaqa's family and supporters. With Ncengwa's confession now on the record, the prosecution is expected to build a stronger case against the remaining accused. Eight witnesses have already testified, and more are expected as the trial resumes. As sentencing looms and the remaining accused prepare for trial, the court proceedings may finally uncover the full truth behind a killing that has left a lasting scar on South African politics.

UNISA faces scrutiny after finance official's whistle-blowing on ANC-linked spending

Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Nobuhle Nkabane, has revealed that she is keeping a close eye on the prevailing conditions, which have seen the continued suspension of senior officials at the institution. Image: Jacques Naude / Independent Newspapers Minister of Higher Education Nobuhle Nkabane has revealed that her department is keeping a close eye on the situation at the University of South Africa (UNISA). This comes amid reports that the institution has been engaged in a series of suspensions involving some of its senior officials who are being sidelined for allegedly sounding the alarm on irregular financial transactions at the institution. In the latest wave of suspensions, it is reported that the university has suspended another senior official in its finance department for blowing the whistle on R500,000 that was allegedly spent on an ANC-aligned event. It is reported that this official is suspected of having allegedly downloaded the R500,000 proof of payment for the event. In a statement on Monday, the minister indicated that she was looking into the issues affecting the integrity of the institution, which has in the past been dogged by controversy following previous allegations of poor governance and financial mismanagement. Image: Twitter "The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Nobuhle Nkabane, has taken note of recent developments at the University of South Africa, including the alleged suspension of senior officials and ongoing concerns about governance and financial management. "The minister wishes to assure all stakeholders that the department is closely monitoring the situation and will be engaging with the university and supporting it in addressing any governance and operational shortcomings," she said. Nkabane's remarks come just over a week after AfriForum's private prosecution unit indicated that it has noticed a pattern in how the institution deals with some of its officials who have turned into whistle-blowers due to the prevailing atmosphere of concealing criminality within the higher echelons of the institution. As a result, the unit has confirmed that it now represents Donald Ndlovu, who was suspended as a senior manager within the institution's finance department and placed under cautionary suspension at the end of April. In a statement, spokesperson for the unit, Barry Bateman, revealed that since April last year, the unit has represented Dr Reshma Mathura, Unisa's acting vice principal finance and chief financial officer. "Despite being on suspension for more than a year, the disciplinary process is still ongoing. The unit understands that several investigations of Mathura's conduct have cleared her of corruption allegations that she received illicit payments from students. The unit suspects she was suspended for her role in exposing corruption and cooperating in a Hawks investigation of financial malfeasance at the institution," stated Bateman.

‘There is no state capture in NPA': Ramaphosa to meet Batohi after infiltration claims

The NPA has made progress in prosecuting high-profile cases, according to the president. President Cyril Ramaphosa at the Sustainable Infrastructure Development Symposium South Africa (SIDSSA) at Century City on 27 May 2025. Picture: Gallo Images/ER Lombard President Cyril Ramaphosa says there is no state capture within the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) amidst growing criticism over its handling of several high-profile cases. This follows recent remarks by National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Shamila Batohi, who alleged that the NPA had been 'infiltrated' by rogue elements. Her comments came in the wake of criticism directed at the NPA, particularly over its handling of a special plea concerning Moroadi Cholota, the personal assistant to former Free State premier Ace Magashule. In addition to the Cholota matter, the NPA has faced scrutiny for bungling several cases, including the corruption case against former Cabinet minister Zizi Kodwa and the rape trial of Nigerian Pastor Timothy Omotoso. Ramaphosa to meet with Batohi over NPA claims Speaking to the media in Saulsville, Pretoria, during an engagement with beneficiaries of government employment programmes on Tuesday, Ramaphosa confirmed plans to meet Batohi. The president noted that Batohi walked back her claim about infiltration following a meeting with Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi last week. 'The NDPP did make that statement, and she has later said she used the wrong word about the infiltration. 'I'm going to have a meeting with her so she can really take out of her chest some of the challenges she is facing,' Ramaphosa said. ALSO READ: Batohi clarifies NPA infiltration claims to justice minister amid criticism He emphasised that, despite challenges, the NPA has made notable progress in prosecuting high-profile cases. 'The NPA has really done considerable work to stabilise itself as well as to go on with various prosecutions. 'Quite often we look at those where there is failure or where there are mistakes, and we think the whole system is not working,' Ramphosa said. 'I don't believe that there is state capture now that is underway in the NPA 'I do believe that there are some really good prosecutors in the NPA, and there are those [who] are putting in a lot of effort. A number of cases are being prosecuted, including those that came out of the Zondo Commission,' he added. Response to Higher Education minister controversy Ramaphosa also addressed recent controversy involving Higher Education Minister Dr Nobuhle Nkabane, who faced criticism over her conduct and the contentious Sector Education and Training Authority (Seta) board appointments. Nkabane appeared before parliament's portfolio committee on higher education and training on 30 May, where she was questioned about the appointments. The list, which leaked to the public, drew criticism for including ANC-affiliated figures such as former KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube, former ANC KZN deputy chairperson Mike Mabuyakhulu, and Buyambo Mantashe, son of Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe. READ MORE: No party favourites: Minister defends appointment of Mantashe's son to Seta board Though the appointments were withdrawn, Nkabane refused to reveal the names of the independent panel members who advised her on the candidates to members of parliament. She also came under scrutiny after videos surfaced showing her chewing during the meeting. In response, Ramaphosa requested that Nkabane submit a detailed report on the appointment process and her conduct. 'She is meant to give me a report. She has received a clear letter from me, so that is still underway. When it happens, we will be able to communicate that and what it is we need to do going forward,' the president told reporters on Tuesday. Teacher assistant programme Ramaphosa spoke about the government's ongoing commitment to the teacher assistant programme, saying the employment initiative was in need of expansion. He highlighted the programme's positive impact and reiterated efforts to make such positions permanent. 'We would want it to be much longer than what it is now. It is a question of not having sufficient resources to be able to extend it beyond.' He acknowledged weaknesses in the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), but claimed that the teacher assistant initiative has remained free of corruption. 'There has not even been any funny processes. It's been flawless, and it has been well-executed.' NOW READ: 'Expanded looting': Civil servants steal R14 million from EPWP funds
