Yankees' Marcus Stroman walks back starter-only stance: ‘Open to anything'
BRIDGEWATER, N.J. — New York Yankees starting pitcher Marcus Stroman has changed his mind about reconsidering his role with the club. The right-hander said he would be open to pitching out of the bullpen when he returns from the injured list after declaring that he wouldn't do it just a few months ago. Advertisement 'I'm open to anything,' he said after making his first rehab start at Double-A Somerset on Wednesday afternoon at TD Bank Ballpark. With the Yankees in Kansas City, Stroman threw 3 1/3 innings, striking out four, walking two and giving up one hit and one earned run. He threw 46 pitches and touched 89 mph several times with his sinker, though he appeared to throw all of his pitches. Stroman has been on the IL with left knee inflammation since April 12. He said the problem is the ACL that he tore in college. 'There's a bunch of a little mess going on there,' he said. 'I don't really even like to talk about it at this point. It just is what it is. It's 10 years removed on an ACL.' Stroman added that he had a cortisone shot and a nerve blocker. 'It was something that I was feeling walking around,' he said. Nice ovation for Marcus Stroman, who went 3 1/3 innings, striking out four with two walks, a hit and one earned run. Threw 46 pitches. Touched 89 mph a bunch with the sinker. — Brendan Kuty 🧟♂️ (@BrendanKutyNJ) June 11, 2025 Stroman said he had been dealing with a 'crazy deep throb' and 'ache' in his knee, which has improved of late. He said he expected to feel soreness Thursday morning, but that he's learning to deal with it, and that he expects to make another rehab start next week. 'Way more confident position with my knee now than I was,' he said. It's unclear what kind of role the Yankees may have for Stroman when he returns. They have a full five-man rotation with Ryan Yarbrough lately emerging as a viable fifth starter after they moved on from veteran Carlos Carrasco. Righty Luis Gil, who played catch at Somerset on Wednesday, is also working his way back from the injured list and could return sometime around the All-Star break. Gil won the American League Rookie of the Year last year. Advertisement In spring training, there also didn't appear to be a spot in the rotation for Stroman, but then ace Gerrit Cole had Tommy John surgery, Gil strained his lat and Clarke Schmidt had right rotator cuff tendonitis. Stroman wound up making three starts before going on the IL, posting an 0-1 record with an 11.57 ERA. Stroman said he hasn't spoken with the Yankees about his expected role yet. 'Just very open to whatever it may be,' he said. Stroman had financial motivation to remain a starting pitcher going into the season. His $17-million option for 2026 would have kicked in if he pitched 140 innings this year. It's now virtually impossible for him to reach that mark this season. In February, he shot down talk of him potentially going into a relief role. 'I'm a starter,' he said at the time. 'I won't pitch in the bullpen.' Now, things have changed. 'I think everybody who has been a starter would want to be a starter,' he said. 'I think that's just natural at this point. I don't think anybody who has had a career like I've had starting would just voluntarily say … you know. But obviously we have an incredible team, you don't know how the season's going to play out. There's always a bunch of things that happen. So, yeah, I'm looking to get back to 100 percent, which I feel pretty close (to). Build my pitch count and take it from there.'

A reality check for the USMNT: Why Poch's plan backfired in an ugly loss
If Mauricio Pochettino wanted to learn more about the depth of the U.S. men's national team player pool, he sure got a lesson on Tuesday night. The Argentine coach's young and experimental USMNT lineup was roundly embarrassed 4-0 by Switzerland in a friendly match in Nashville, in a game that served as the Americans' final dress rehearsal for the Concacaf Gold Cup, which Pochettino's squad opens on Sunday against Trinidad and Tobago (kickoff at 6 p.m. ET on FOX). The big takeaway? If this team is going to make any noise at all at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on home soil a year from now, the USMNT regulars can't get back soon enough. For reasons too various to fully recap here, Pochettino is without most of what most would consider his strongest possible lineup this summer. Christian Pulisic isn't there. Neither are Folarin Balogun, Sergino Dest, Weston, McKennie, Yunus Musah, Ricardo Pepi, Gio Reyna, Antonee Robinson, Joe Scally, Tanner Tessmann or Tim Weah. Heart and soul midfielder Tyler Adams, the USMNT's captain at the 2022 World Cup, sat out Tuesday's debacle because of a foot injury that may yet rule him out of the Gold Cup. Take a dozen of the most seasoned players out of any national team, and the results might not be pretty. Then there's the fact that Pochettino came into this two-exhibition set — the U.S. lost 2-1 to Türkiye in Connecticut last Saturday — planning to use almost all the 26 players on his roster. The plan backfired, with the U.S. conceding all four goals during a 23-minute span midway through the first half. "It's my responsibility, the decision of the choice of the starting 11," Pochettino said afterward. "It went in the wrong direction from the beginning. We were never again in the game against a very good team like Switzerland, with experienced players, a team that is playing really well. [So] my first thought is not to blame the players, it's to blame ourselves. "That was my decision and that decision didn't work." Pochettino started 20 different players over the two contests, and he has now fielded 65 players in all since replacing Gregg Berhalter at the U.S. helm last September. "With more than 60 players, it's difficult to have the continuity or balance," Pochettino said. "We changed a lot, [both] the starting 11 and the roster." Just two players started both games, and Pochettino left the experienced likes of Chris Richards and Tim Ream on the bench in Music City, though Ream was among a number of subs who came on in the second half and helped shut down the Swiss over the final 45 minutes. But the young starters were thoroughly outclassed by a Swiss XI that included European standouts like Manchester City center back Manuel Akanji, Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka and Borussia Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel. Fullbacks Max Arfsten and Nathan Harriel were badly exposed defensively. It was the fourth consecutive loss for Pochettino's team, all of them at home. Coming on the heels of the regulars' last-place finish at March's Concacaf Nations League finals, the hope was that a few of the understudies would run with the rare opportunity to log big minutes in a tournament setting. Some have: Diego Luna continues to impress. Johnny Cardoso and Malik Tillman could still have a big Gold Cup. So too could the U.S. It just doesn't seem likely. Last year's 5-1 drubbing by Colombia foreshadowed a historic Copa América failure, as the Americans became the first host nation not to advance from group play in the 108-year history of that competition. Pochettino will no doubt field his strongest possible lineup in the Gold Cup. The U.S. will still be severely shorthanded. That doesn't bode well for their chances against competitive foes who'll be mostly intact. Two years ago, Panama eliminated a third-string USMNT in the Gold Cup semis. Three of those games were in the 2007 Copa América in Venezuela, where the Americans sent a "C" squad and paid a steep price, finishing last in their group with a negative-6 goal differential. Sure, a team of U.S. reserves famously shocked Mexico's regulars in the 2021 Gold Cup final. But that hasn't been the norm historically. It isn't even the ultimate goal. "After working one month together, some players that maybe you don't think have the possibility to be on the roster at the World Cup, could be," Pochettino said. "Maybe someone can surprise us. It's about opportunity. But you take a risk when you compete with this level of opponent." This roster is still capable of showing well at the Gold Cup, though. If they can come together as a team, find a lineup that clicks and catch lightning in a bottle, they remain capable of making a deep run. However the results go the rest of this summer, it's clear that Pochettino will need every possible weapon at his disposal a year from now to make the World Cup campaign a success. "The boys are so motivated to play in the Gold Cup," Pochettino said. "The feeling after Türkiye was good. We made nine changes and the combinations didn't work. That's it. "We can lose [this game], but we can win the Gold Cup and arrive at the World Cup and do well." We'll see. Aaron Rodgers already has major complaint with the Steelers, and it's not what you'd expect
Aaron Rodgers is excited to start his new journey with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but he already has one complaint. He hates his helmet. "I can't stand the helmet," Rodgers told reporters on Tuesday, as he's no longer allowed to wear the Schutt model he has usually sported throughout his career. "I've worn a Schutt for 20 years and somehow it finally didn't pass the safety standard." Rodgers sported a Schutt Air XP Pro Q11 LTD during his games last season, which is rare when it comes to helmets in the NFL. Only Joe Flacco, Thomas Morstead and Nick Folk wore the same model. Rodgers is no stranger to changing his helmet, as he seemed to be fine with it in 2019 when he was forced to find a different model. But the second time around, he's finding it an issue. Now, Rodgers has time once more to find a new helmet being that it is only mandatory minicamp right now. But, whether Rodgers likes it or not, the NFL's top priority is safety. As new helmet technology gets developed, older models of helmets will be obsolete. Rodgers has only been with the Steelers for a few days, but he's already made a few headlines at minicamp. The biggest of them all was him revealing his wedding ring to reporters on Tuesday, claiming he had been with his partner for "a couple months." Speculation about Rodgers being married has been swirling since photos from the Steelers announcing his signing went viral. He was wearing the same band on his left hand. The woman Rodgers married remains a mystery, but he did claim on the "Pat McAfee Show" in December that he was dating a woman named "Brittani." Rodgers signed a one-year deal with the Steelers reportedly worth up to $19.5 million with incentives. The four-time MVP has a $10 million guarantee in his deal, per ESPN. The announcement by the Steelers ended a long offseason journey that had many believing Rodgers would end up in Pittsburgh as quarterback-needy teams found options elsewhere. When the Steelers waited until the sixth round to take a quarterback (Will Howard), all signs pointed to Rodgers joining head coach Mike Tomlin's group. Now that he is with the team at minicamp, Rodgers will try to get acclimated with his new weapons, including D.K. Metcalf, who was traded by the Seattle Seahawks this offseason. But he will also need to figure out what new model of helmet he can be comfortable in this season.
