LA County union workers arrested after interrupting Board of Supervisors meeting

Tensions over a recent contract battle between Los Angeles County and its workers spilled over at Tuesday's Board of Supervisors meeting. Several members of the Service Employees International Union, which represents the employees, were arrested when they refused to leave. "We're trying to send a message to the LA County Board of Supervisors," SEIU member Raymond Meza said. In late April, union workers staged a walkout that lasted several days. While talks have progressed since then, union leaders claim county officials are asking for unfair provisions. "The main sticking point is that the county wants to put in poison pills such as negotiating wages with us but having the unilateral ability to take it away," Meza said. "What is the point of doing this negotiation process if they can just undermine it whenever they want." The county said it's offering workers a fair deal that includes a $5,000 bonus, an additional bonus and cost-of-living adjustments. Supervisors said the county is going through one of the worst financial crises because of billions of dollars in sexual assault claims, the recent wildfires and the uncertain economic outlook. Union leaders said even with this offer the county is not bargaining in good faith. "After over 60 days without a contract, we want this settled now," Meza said.

Protesters stops eviction at Caltrans-owned home in El Sereno

Protesters in El Sereno stopped Los Angeles County deputies from evicting a 70-year-old man from a state-owned home that has remained vacant for decades. Benito Flores moved into the Caltrans-owned home during the pandemic. He's called himself a "reclaimer" of one of the more than 100 homes that've sat vacant for decades because of the failed 710 Freeway expansion. "I'm going to fight the eviction," he said. "Caltrans have 170 houses empty for 20 years, why? This is an absurdity." Before the pandemic, Flores had lived in his car for more than a decade and eventually seized the vacant home roughly five years ago. He formally moved into the house after signing a lease with the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles. However, the agreement ended two years ago. "I will die in the street because I have diabetes," Flores said. "I will die as a martyr to call attention around the housing program." Flores said HACLA violated the agreement by not providing him housing prior to the eviction notice. HACLA denied his claims. The city said they gave Flores referrals to multiple affordable housing sites and an emergency housing voucher, but he refused. Flores denied refusing the offers from HACLA. He said he'll resist arrest until the end. "I made a cabin in the top of the tree and I am going to go and wait for the sheriff there," he said. HACLA said it still wants to avoid locking out any of the so-called reclaimers, adding that it has offered financial settlements. Flores is still hopeful he'll be able to stay. "We have the right to live here," he said. "We have the right to purchase these properties under the Roberti Law."

Trump Can Rewrite the Narrative of America in Africa

In Africa, as in many other parts of the world, Donald Trump's policies have made him the embodiment of the pejorative stereotype of the ugly American – ignorant, arrogant and dangerous. He destroyed the 25-year-old African Growth and Opportunity Act, which granted African products duty-free entry to the US, imposing punishing tariffs on the continent. He canceled billions of dollars in aid, worth $12.7 billion in 2024. He angered African leaders with his White House ambush of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. And he's ramped up his previous insults against African nations by belittling countries such as Lesotho, an impoverished kingdom of 2.3 million, while nearly obliterating its economy with tariffs of 50%, the highest initially slapped on any country globally. Nevertheless, the US president has an opportunity to change the narrative without reversing any of the measures he's taken against Africa. Following their May 21 brawl, Ramaphosa announced that after months of proclaiming that neither he nor his officials would participate in the Johannesburg G-20 meetings this year, Trump will attend the all-important November summit after all.
