Holy Kaaba's Kiswah on display in Jeddah
JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia's Islamic Arts Biennale 2025 featured a series of events this week to celebrate the first public display outside Makkah of the whole Kiswah of the Holy Kaaba.
The exhibition allows visitors to admire the intricate weaving and embroidery of the Kiswah, a cloth that adorns the Holy Kaaba in the Grand Mosque in Makkah, made with silk, gold, and silver thread.
The second edition of the biennale is being held at the Western Hajj Terminal of King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah until May 25.
It is hosted by the Diriyah Biennale Foundation, which aims to showcase Islamic craftsmanship and enhance understanding of Islamic cultural legacy.
The foundation said that the Kiswah of the Holy Kaaba, with its distinctive inscriptions and ornamentations, is 'considered the highest form of creative production in Islamic arts,' and holds significance in the lives of Muslims worldwide.
The exhibition highlights Saudi Arabia's key role in serving Islam and Muslims over the decades.
Since 1927, the King Abdulaziz Complex for Holy Kaaba Kiswa has been producing decorative embroidered clothes for the Holy Kaaba, which is replaced annually.
Alongside the Kiswah, the Islamic Arts Biennale 2025 will display an array of historical Islamic artifacts and contemporary artworks.

Hajj: A message of peace and unity
Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam, is not merely a religious rite performed annually by Muslims, it is the greatest spiritual gathering known to humanity. It is an eloquent annual lesson in tolerance and openness — one whose impact should extend beyond the spiritual realm to relations between nations and peoples. We believe that Hajj is not only an individual obligation but also an annual opportunity to renew the values of Islamic solidarity and strengthen the bonds of brotherhood among nations. Just as pilgrims gather on the same plain, Muslims must also unite in the spheres of politics, dialogue and cooperation — for the benefit of their peoples and the stability of their homelands. Moreover, they must extend their hands with love and peace to all nations, as commanded by Allah. Here, the significant role of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation becomes evident. As the collective umbrella organization for the Islamic world, it must serve as a platform to bridge perspectives, promote development and defend the causes and interests of its member states — foremost among them being the Palestinian cause and the challenges facing Muslim minorities around the globe. Hajj teaches us that unity is not a choice — it is a necessity. The voice of wisdom resonates more powerfully when it emerges from a united stance and a shared vision. From our diplomatic position, we see Hajj as an opportunity for the meeting of diverse Islamic cultures, the exchange of experiences and the deepening of cooperation among Muslim peoples. This is something all of us in diplomatic institutions must cherish and work to establish as a lasting value that transcends time and place. My country, the Republic of Djibouti, through its balanced and moderate political positions and its membership of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, seeks to remain a bridge for communication and dialogue and a platform for coordination among Islamic nations on various issues. Hajj Sacred Journey: A Rare Glimpse Inside Kaaba
Muslims across the globe are gearing up for their most sacred journey, the Hajj pilgrimage, one of the five pillars of Islam. Kaaba, the holiest site in Islam, lies at the center of Hajj rituals. The Kaaba is a cube-shaped building located at the center of Al-Masjid Al-Haram (the Great Mosque) in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. The Holy Kaaba is covered with a black silk cloth (Kiswah), adorned with silk, gold, and silver embroidery. Although millions of Muslims perform Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage each year, only few people are allowed to enter the Kaaba. These include high-ranking Muslim dignitaries, prominent clerics and scholars, as well as special guests. In this article, we will explore the interior of the Kaaba, offering a privileged glimpse into the aesthetic richness of its details. Kaaba Significance in Islam The Kaaba is the center of worship (Qibla) for Muslims all over the world. During their prayers, Muslims face the direction of the Kaaba. The Kaaba also has a great significance in the spiritual journey of Hajj. Pilgrims travel to Makkah during the first ten days of Dhu'al-Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar. They undertake a set of rituals performed by Prophet Mohammed PBUH centuries ago. They perform another Tawaf, Farewell Tawaf (Tawaf Al-Wadaa). During this rite, they circumambulate the Kaaba seven times right before leaving Makkah in the last ritual of Hajj. Hajj lasts four to six days depending on the pilgrim's speed. This year, the sacred journey is expected to take place from June 4-9, 2025, depending on the sighting of the moon. Inside Kaaba The Kaaba interior spans an area of about 180 square meters. It has three wooden pillars holding its roof, built by Prophet's companion, Abdullah bin Zubair, each with a height of 9 meters. The wooden pillars have a dark brown color; each has a perimeter of about 150 centimeters and a diameter of 44 centimeters. To the right of this area lies Bab al-Tawbah (The Door of Repentance), which has a staircase leading to the roof. Bab al-Tawbah door is made from pure gold, while the staircase consists of 50 steps made from aluminum and crystal. Kaaba Lanterns A number of lanterns and incense burners hang from the ceiling. Those lanterns, which were gifts from rulers and wealthy benefactors over the ages, are made from copper, silver, and glass. They are adorned with Quranic verses and some of them carry the names of rulers who gifted them. There is also a dark-colored marble spot, where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to pray inside the Kaaba. The wooden pillars area also contains a large box for storing the Kaaba perfuming materials. It includes Oud and Taif Rose oils as well as silver incense burners. These items are used to perfume and incense the interior of the Kaaba after its washing with Zamzam and rose waters. Marble Walls The internal floor of the Kaaba is covered with white marble, with a strip of black marble bordering it. Meanwhile, the walls are covered with rose-colored marble stones. They are constructed in a way that ensures they do not come into contact with the Kaaba's original walls. A large green cloth covers the upper part of the wall, extending 5 meters up to the ceiling. It is adorned with a white inscription of the Islamic Shahada (the Islamic declaration of faith: There is no God but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah). Decorative Stones The interior of the Kaaba is adorned with eight decorative stones carrying scripts in Thuluth Arabic calligraphy and one stone carrying Kufic script. They all date back to after the sixth century AH. The inscriptions on these stones, which use precious and colorful pieces of marble, commemorate the architectural contributions of Saudi Arabia's past rulers to Islam's holiest site. Hajj 2025: Saudi Arabia Unveils Comprehensive Plan for Seamless Experience
Saudi Arabia's General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque has revealed an expansive operational strategy to ensure seamless experience for Hajj 2025. Millions of pilgrims are preparing to converge on the holy sites for this year's significant Hajj season. Consequently, the Kingdom aims to deliver a safe, spiritually fulfilling experience for all worshippers. This comprehensive field plan ensures maximum comfort and accessibility. Enhancing Pilgrim Experience, Accessibility The authority, in a detailed briefing, outlined a wide-ranging suite of services and enhancements. Furthermore, they introduced these across the Grand Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah. This initiative aligns with their mission to meet the highest standards of organization, accessibility, and hospitality. Importantly, they are dedicated to elevating every aspect of the pilgrimage. Thirteen dedicated prayer areas have been set aside for people with disabilities. This ensures equal access to worship for all pilgrims. Moreover, to ease movement throughout the expansive mosque complexes, the authority activated 22 elevators and 224 escalators. Recognizing the linguistic diversity of the global Muslim community, religious and educational materials will also be available in 27 languages. This truly helps international pilgrims engage more fully with the spiritual experience. Streamlined Operations and Comfort Provisions Nineteen gates have been activated to improve the flow of pilgrims. This enables better crowd management during peak times. Subsequently, this significantly enhances pilgrim movement in and out of the mosques. To ensure comfort amid the desert heat, more than 883 air conditioning units, 244 mist fans, and 3,139 ventilation fans have been installed. These are strategically positioned throughout the holy sites. Additionally, 432 fragrance diffusers will infuse the air with calming aromas, enhancing the overall atmosphere of tranquility and reverence. Mobility has also been addressed with the deployment of 400 electric carts. These provide essential support for elderly and physically limited pilgrims in completing their sacred rites. Furthermore, the authority ensures robust safety measures are in place. Safety and Cultural Preservation On the safety front, the authority strategically positioned 1,229 emergency response tools. These are located across high-traffic areas. Additionally, they integrated a high-quality audio network of 8,000 speakers. This delivers clear guidance and religious messages throughout the pilgrimage during Hajj 2025. The mosques' libraries continue to play a central role in Islamic scholarship and cultural preservation. They offer access to 8,503 rare manuscripts as part of an ongoing digitization initiative. To support visual clarity and safety, more than 120,000 lighting units have been activated. These illuminate both holy sites and their surrounding facilities, ensuring clear visibility for all.
