Northampton hang on to edge out Newcastle in thriller
Northampton survived a late scare to snatch a narrow 35-34 victory over Newcastle at Kingston Park.
A thrilling encounter saw Craig Wright cancel out Jamie Blamire's opening try and after Brett Connon sent the Falcons ahead again from the tee, Northampton seized control just before half-time with Luke Green, Fin Smith and debutant Will Glister all scoring.
Connor Doherty pulled one back for Newcastle after the break and although Tom James struck for Saints, tries from Alex Hearle and Ben Stevenson dragged the hosts back into the contest. Max Pepper scored the Falcons' fifth try to threaten a late comeback, but Northampton managed to hold on and end their three-game losing run in the Premiership.
Saints made 14 changes to their starting lineup from the weekend's Champions Cup win over Castres, but were handed an early blow as Newcastle went ahead six minutes in when Murray McCallum slipped through the visitors' defence and offloaded to Blamire on the left, who crossed before Connon converted. Northampton soon levelled after a good spell of pressure on the Newcastle tryline and some smart passing allowed Wright to burst forward and score his first Premiership try, with Rory Hutchinson adding the extras.
Connon kicked Newcastle back in front with a penalty and after an impressive buildup through the phases, Callum Chick's try was chalked off following a TMO review. Hearle then chipped the ball over the Saints' defence before chasing it down and a quick move reached Elliott Obatoyinbo but the full-back was denied following a big tackle in the right corner.
Pepper came on to replace Obatoyinbo and Saints then appeared to have struck, but Wright's try was ruled out. The visitors took the lead for the first time in the game when a quick switch in play towards the right allowed Green to touch down for his maiden Premiership try and Smith kicked the conversion.
Northampton piled on the misery for Newcastle just before the break with two tries in quick succession when Smith squeezed through a gap before converting his own effort and Glister kicked a loose ball and chased it down to bag the bonus point, with Smith's kick successful. The Falcons pulled one back just two minutes into the second half when a fast break reached Doherty on the left to cross in the corner. Connon's conversion attempt curled wide of the upright.
Tom Litchfield had a try disallowed by the TMO for a forward pass but Northampton soon extended their advantage when James sprinted ahead to ground underneath the posts and Smith added the extras.

Newcastle continued to fight back and after a good set of phases, Hearle charged over the line on the left before Connon converted. Ben Stevenson then dived over in the left corner to pick up a bonus point and with four minutes left on the clock, Pepper latched on to a loose ball and surged forward from inside his own half to ground. Connon's conversion reduced the gap to one point but Saints withstood some late pressure to snatch victory.

This is not the first time the scenario has arose - four years ago Gatland was missing 12 players from his 37-man squad that went to Jersey before their first game against Japan at Murrayfield. Farrell knew this was a possibility and has been making contingency plans. It is understood that several players will be on standby to come into Farrell's squad, but will not stay with the team when they fly to Australia. The Lions boss will call up those players who are already at the top of his standby list so that they are somewhat integrated in the squad should they receive a call-up to head Down Under as injury cover later down the line. The Lions want to avoid a repeat of the controversy from the 2017 tour to New Zealand - which became known as 'geography six'. Then head coach Warren Gatland called up six players based on their geographical proximity to the Lions, rather than the best man for the job, as he was accused of devaluing the jersey. The Times has already reported that Jamie George will join Lions training in Portugal next week as cover for Dan Sheehan and Ronan Kelleher. Farrell will be missing two of this three hookers due to Leinster playing in the final with Luke Cowan-Dickie the only original member of the squad available. He will also be without three of his second row options in James Ryan, Joe McCarthy and Ollie Chessum. The two men tipped to battle for the 15 shirt - Kinghorn and Hugo Keenan - are also absent. The two Smiths - Fin and Marcus - will eye the fly-half berth when the Lions face Argentina as they look to stake their claim. Russell has been tipped as the man to wear the 10 shirt but Fin Smith has made himself the starter for England and is seen as perhaps favouring Farrell's gameplan more. Philippe Clement pinpoints Rangers breaking point as flop boss admits board 'listened to fans too much'
Philippe Clement has pinpointed the moment he felt his Rangers breaking point had arrived. The Belgian boss was given the boot at Ibrox last season with rivals Celtic running away at the top of the Premiership and no chance of silverware after a Premier Sports Cup Final defeat and a major Scottish Cup upset at Ibrox from Queen's Park. Despite winning plaudits for his results and performances in the Europa League, his side couldn't replicate it week to week in the domestic bread and butter and ultimately it proved costly to the 51-year-old after he was axed. It is all change at Ibrox now with 49ers Enterprises completing their takeover at the club and Russell Martin now in as manager. But former boss Clement believes THAT Hampden defeat to Brendan Rodgers was the 'vital game' as he admitted the board 'maybe listened too much to some fans' as he looked back on his time in Govan. He told BBC Sport Scotland: "I had a feeling, a bad feeling, after the League Cup final. I think it was a vital game. "If we had won, there would have been more patience with the fans also and the board could have stayed much calmer. "It's a pity that the story stopped, that the board didn't have the patience, or maybe listened too much to some fans. "There are other clubs where there is a difficult moment and everybody sticks together because everybody knows the story, how the work is done inside the building, and they continue and they are successful afterwards. "In three or four windows, we could have closed the gap [to Celtic] with a good development of players, but the decision is made and you need to accept it." It is set to be a busy summer at Rangers with a host of names already linked with joining the new Martin revolution. But Clement reckons FIVE players at the club now have real sell on value and teams would pay good money for their services. Nico Raskin and Mohamed Diomande have both been linked with summer exits - the latter with Everton. But there are also others who the Belgian reckons could net a tidy windfall. He continued: "Nicolas Raskin made a really good evolution. A lot of clubs are interested in him. "But you also have Jefte, Hamza Igamane, Clinton Nsiala, who will have a better value. Mohamed Diomande is also one of those guys. "The club has worked well the past year in that way. "There are now four or five players with the value to sell and several teams would pay good amounts of money.
