MALAYSIAN medical graduates have become the preferred choice among Singapore hospitals, which view them as 'affordable yet high-quality assets,' according to a doctor serving at a hospital in the island republic.
A physician who asked to be identified only as Dr. Akram claims that Malaysian medical graduates can be found in all Singaporean hospitals and are sought after due to Malaysia's holistic training system for junior doctors.
'At the hospital where I work, 40% of the medical staff are graduates from leading Malaysian universities,' said Dr. Akram, who has been practicing in Singapore for one year.
According to the report by FMT, Dr. Akram received an offer to serve in Singapore after working as a medical officer at a Malaysian hospital for just six months.
'Singapore plans to build two new hospitals, which will likely attract even more medical graduates or medical officers from Malaysia,' he added.
According to the Singapore Ministry of Health website, there are 11 public hospitals in the republic alongside nine private hospitals and 10 specialist centers focusing on cancer, cardiology, ophthalmology, dermatology, neuroscience, infectious diseases, and dentistry.
On March 20, The Star reported an increasing trend of Malaysian medical graduates leaving for Singapore to complete their housemanship training.
Marina Mat Baki, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, stated that 30 graduates moved to Singapore in 2023, compared to 25 in 2022, 15 in 2021, and only two in 2020.
Meanwhile, Dr. Akram said his local-based colleagues have informed him that many medical officers are planning to work abroad.
According to him, they are attracted by generous salaries and other benefits, as well as better treatment and work-life balance commensurate with their responsibilities and workload.
'Honestly, many medical students from two popular local universities are currently exploring opportunities and interested in joining us here,' he said.
He noted that while Malaysia's system provides adequate training and exposure, many medical officers experience burnout due to issues with treatment, welfare, and lack of work-life balance.
'More painfully, these problems seem to have no end in sight,' he remarked.
Dr. Akram explained that junior medical officers in Singapore receive monthly medical officer allowances, monthly housing allowances, and annual wellness allowances, as well as performance bonuses and variable corporate bonuses, in addition to salary and on-call payments for regular days, weekends, and public holidays.
They are also granted annual leave, sick leave, leave without sick leave certification, marriage leave, family needs leave, training or course leave, and maternity/paternity leave.
Dr. Akram said that requesting leave is much easier compared to Malaysia, where there is 'insufficient workforce.'
'Here, each hospital has its own specialist doctors, medical officers, and trainee doctors. In Malaysia, our specialists are scattered—for example, cardiologists at Hospital Serdang and others elsewhere,' he explained.
According to him, the number of patients treated by a single medical officer is also not as high as in Malaysia.
'Here, a medical officer will treat only 20 patients daily, but in Malaysia, a doctor must treat up to 40 patients per day,' he concluded.

In recent times, we have witnessed an unsettling surge in cases of child sexual grooming linked to social media platforms. Beneath the glossy facade of influencer culture lies a growing epidemic that preys on children. The Malaysian Mental Health Association believes it is time we recognise this as a national concern. This is not just a digital safety issue; it is a child protection crisis. Social media influencers now wield more power over young minds than teachers or parents. They produce content that is aspirational and intimate. For children and teens, this creates a dangerous illusion of closeness and trust. Just recently, a social media influencer was arrested and remanded for four days to assist in an investigation regarding allegations of sending obscene pictures to a teenage girl. According to Bukit Aman's Sexual, Women and Child Investigation Division, over 30% of all child sexual grooming cases received by police involved social media influencers or public figures. Police say offenders often use their online popularity to build trust with victims before allegedly committing indecent acts. Clearly, the very platforms that gave these individuals reach also gave them unfiltered access to their victims. A need for validation Adolescents are neurologically wired for risk-taking and a desire for novelty. The teenage brain, particularly the prefrontal cortex that is responsible for judgement and impulse control, is still in the process of maturation and development throughout adolescence. Social media's dopamine-driven algorithms lead children to crave validation and social connection at any cost. A 2020 United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) report indicates that 91% of Malaysian children aged 13 to 17 use the internet daily, including social media, with 70% having been exposed to disturbing content. Another study by Unicef Malaysia in 2021 showed that 4% of children aged 12 to 17 who use the internet face threats of online sexual exploitation and abuse. Children who feel emotionally neglected, face bullying or are socially isolated are particularly vulnerable. To them, the attention of a popular influencer feels like salvation until it turns into control, manipulation or abuse. Potentially-severe consequences The psychological toll of online grooming is overwhelming. Victims of grooming and online sexual exploitation frequently experience persistent sadness, hopelessness and low self-esteem. These may trigger anxiety and panic disorders. In some instances, children may develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is characterised by intrusive memories, nightmares, dissociation and emotional numbing. Many of these symptoms may be invisible to others, but to the victims, they can be immensely disabling. A tragically-common response when shame outweighs coping resources is self-harm and suicidal thoughts. Many victims never disclose what happened and the grooming never comes to light. Victims are afraid to speak up. The influencer may be a highly influential public figure who is widely adored. Victims fear judgement, disbelief, shame, being blamed for 'leading on' the adult and/or retaliation from the influencer, particularly if the influencer is well-known or admired in the community. The 2022 National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) showed that a significant portion of adolescents were affected by mental health concerns. Specifically, one in four adolescents experienced depression symptoms, and 7.9% reported having suicidal thoughts. These findings highlight a concerning trend in adolescent mental health in Malaysia. Though these figures are not all attributable to grooming, online exploitation could be a significant, underreported contributor. Mental health support is also not always accessible. The shortage of clinical psychologists and trauma-informed therapists in Malaysia makes it difficult for survivors to receive timely, appropriate care. While services like Talian Kasih (15999) and Talian HEAL (1-5555) provide some frontline support, there is still a long way to go in making trauma services available, affordable and stigma-free. Legal protection, difficult enforcement Defined as the process of establishing a relationship with a child to sexually exploit them, child grooming is a grave violation of a child's rights and dignity. The Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 (Act 792) comprehensively addresses this conduct by criminalising various acts associated with grooming, thereby providing a legal framework to prosecute offenders and protect vulnerable children. However, there are gaps in enforcement and digital oversight. Groomers often operate across jurisdictions, and enforcement agencies struggle to keep pace with encrypted chats, disappearing messages or apps with little data retention. Even when complaints are lodged, investigations can take a considerable amount of time, allowing the influencer to continue posting, gather followers and potentially groom more victims. The influencer ecosystem in Malaysia remains largely unregulated. Vetting influencer behaviour, monitoring content aimed at minors, or penalising misconduct seem wanting. Technology companies operating in Malaysia should enhance their response times to promptly address take-down requests or address child safety concerns. What can we do? Malaysia must rise to this challenge with a united front involving parents, schools, platforms, influencers, civil society and the government. Influencers who produce content for, or feature, children must be subject to professional codes of conduct, background checks and platform-specific moderation. Any breach related to child endangerment must result in swift account suspension and legal action. All Malaysian schools should include age-appropriate modules on digital safety, grooming awareness and online boundaries. This is as essential as any other subject taught in our schools. We must invest in child and adolescent mental health services. The government must encourage trauma-informed training for school counsellors and continue to increase the number of clinical psychologists in the public sector. Subsidised care, such as that offered by the Malaysian Mental Health Association (Helpline 03-2780 6803 or email support@ should also be made available to grooming survivors by other non-governmental bodies. The government should increase public awareness of the excellent service offered by Talian Kasih (15999) and the Cyber999 complaint channel provided by CyberSecurity Malaysia. Reporting mechanisms must be child-friendly and confidential, and followed by immediate support. Social media companies operating in Malaysia must be legally required to implement child protection tools, including AI-based grooming detection and proactive removal of grooming content. Hopefully, this is topmost on the agenda of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Influence for good The voice of responsible influencers in Malaysia is crucial. They shape the culture, trends and digital norms of our society. They should utilise their platforms to call out grooming, educate their followers and stand in solidarity with survivors. If influencers feature children in their content, they should also protect them, not just physically, but emotionally and psychologically as well. To the popular influencers out there, we say: 'Your audience includes impressionable young people. 'Influence them toward dignity, respect and empowerment, not harm.' Every child has the right to grow up free from fear and abuse, whether offline or online, and every adult must ensure that right is protected. We can no longer afford to treat grooming as a rare or foreign concept. It is happening here, on Malaysian soil, on Malaysian phones, and often under the guise of 'likes' and 'followers'. KUALA LUMPUR: The surge of imported durians in the market has sparked concerns among consumers, following claims that these fruits may contain chemicals potentially linked to chronic illnesses, including cancer. Professor Dr Norsida Man, from the Department of Agribusiness and Bioresource Economics at the Faculty of Agriculture, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), confirmed that a chemical called ethephon is widely used in the agricultural sector. Ethephon (2-chloroethylphosphonic acid) is a plant growth regulator. It is a synthetic compound that breaks down into ethylene gas when absorbed by fruit or exposed to specific levels of moisture and temperature. "The compound reacts with water in the fruit's tissues to release ethylene gas — a natural plant hormone that triggers the ripening process," she said. However, she cautioned that if the fruit is harvested before it fully matures, the ripening process becomes incomplete. This results in fruit that appears ripe but has an inconsistent texture, a weaker aroma, and a less intense flavour. Ethephon is permitted in many countries but is subject to maximum residue limits that must be strictly followed. "Toxic effects can occur if ethephon is overused or if the ripening period before sale is insufficient — typically three to seven days are needed for the residues to break down." "In small doses and when used properly, it is not harmful. But what worries consumers is uncontrolled usage, especially in large-scale export industries driven by profit," she added. Common effects of ethephon use include unnatural taste and smell, inconsistent texture, and unstable quality of the fruit. "Exceeding safe limits may lead to potential long-term health effects such as hormonal disruption and organ damage, especially when used excessively and without regulation. "This issue highlights the dilemma between modern market demands and natural food quality. In the long run, rising consumer awareness could drive demand for more authentic, chemically unaltered durians," she said. Norsida also noted that in Thailand, durians are cultivated in various regions — the south, east, and central areas — allowing for a longer harvest season. The main season runs from March to July, while in southern regions near the Malaysian border, it may extend until September. In Malaysia, the main durian season typically occurs between May and August, particularly in states such as Pahang, Johor, Perak, and Penang. A secondary season, if it happens, typically runs from November to January, depending on weather and regional factors.

PETALING JAYA: From the Maldives to mainland China, foreigners are drawn to the world-class healthcare offered by private hospitals in the country, says Association of Private Hospitals Malaysia president Datuk Dr Kuljit Singh (pic). Apart from being cost-effective, these foreign patients were keen on the transparent healthcare plans offered by Malaysian private hospitals, he said. Another plus factor for them was the ease of communication as English is widely spoken, he said in an interview. Last Wednesday, the Health Ministry announced that Malaysia has been ranked as the top destination for medical tourism based on quality, infrastructure, cost-effectiveness and ease of access by Nomad Capitalist, a Dubai-based wealth consultancy firm. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said in a Facebook post that Malaysia's medical tourism sector generated about RM2bil in revenue in 2023, with 1.3 million foreigners seeking treatment in the country. Dr Kuljit told The Star that foreign nationalities who sought treatment are mainly from Indonesia, China, Bangladesh and the Maldives. The rest are from Europe and the United States. 'We are way more affordable compared to our neighbouring countries and far cheaper than western countries,' he said, estimating that foreign patients seeking treatment in Malaysia would be paying 20% to 50% lower than elsewhere. 'For those from the US, the savings could be up to 70% compared to what they would need to fork out in their own country.' He said foreign patients seek a variety of treatments ranging from simple health screening to sophisticated interventions. Dr Kuljit said that being a predominantly Muslim country was also advantageous as it was a plus point for Muslim patients. 'Another factor that has earned the trust and confidence of international patients are Malaysia's strict healthcare standards and accreditation with global medical bodies. 'They are treated with care and only discharged when they are fit to leave the facility,' he added. However, while medical care is seamlessly rendered, Dr Kuljit acknowledged that the biggest challenge private hospitals face is inadequate capacity for inpatients. 'A shortage of manpower such as nurses is an issue,' he said. Furthermore, he said restrictions and conditions imposed on private hospitals that curtail healthcare costs can prove to be a hindrance to the growth of medical tourism. But in the long term, he said Malaysia's future as a medical tourism hub remains bright as the projected number of patients exceeds targets annually. 'I am confident that Malaysia's reputation as one of the leading medical tourism destinations in the world will only continue to grow in leaps and bounds as private hospitals in Malaysia remain committed to delivering reliable, world-class care to Malaysians first and foremost and to the rest of the world,' he added. Dr Kuljit said Malaysians no longer need to travel abroad in search of premium healthcare. 'However, these advantages are sometimes overlooked by Malaysians and lead to a misunderstanding of the role of private hospitals. There is a mistaken notion that the services offered are medical tourism-oriented and solely driven by profit,' he said. He explained that private hospitals strive to improve continuously to meet world-class standards that benefit both the local population and medical tourists. Asked if private hospitals would extend their services to low-income Malaysians as part of their corporate social responsibility since they have earned revenue from medical tourism, he said such initiatives will be further enhanced if private hospitals managed to increase capacity. 'We are happy to work with the public healthcare system and conduct such programmes but we need to have greater capacity and manpower,' he said.
