Our three delightful contestants include Kennedy from Houston Texas, Mason who hails from Birmingham, Alabama, and Moni, whose family is from North Carolina.
Okay, we got the casting right this time and 3 people from the south or atleast have southern roots.
Kennedy is kicking it off first with her barbecue chicken with a side of questionable looking mac & cheese and interesting looking candied yams.
Now I'm not feeling the sides of the presentation alone, but who am I?
I'm just the fun commentator who says what ya'll are thinking – anyways, let's get back into it (haha).
She marinated the barbecue chicken in garlic and onion with a side of dirty rice.
The one word she used to describe her dish: Home.
Let's hope she can bring home the win.
Now, her opponents received their plates and just like any other Black person would, they questioned the mac and cheese.
She used the big shell macaroni and it looked like Velveeta mac and cheese.
Mason clocked it, sharing my sentiments while Moni questioned if Kenendy used canned sweet yams – and by the looks of it, she might be right, no shade.
Let's get into their first bites.
Now, Mason said it best – looks can be deceiving because they both enjoy the piece of chicken with Moni sharing it had 'a little kick to it.'
Kennedy instructed her opponents to eat the rice and yams together – which confused them and wasn't received well. Also, the mac and cheese didn't hit babe for your opponents, either.
So, let's get into her final scoring.
Final score: 12.5
It's Moni's turn, and she made sticky short ribs and prefaced her rib fell off the bone when she first cooked them, but don't expect the meat to drop because it's been sitting before she brought her food to the studio.
I'll give it a pass.
She made her own sauce for the ribs, using ginger, honey, brown sugar, and garlic. The recipe was passed down from her grandmother and I'm sure she's watching in heaven proud of her baby to show them what a good rib tastes like.
Nothing like a tradition from an elder.
No sides on her plate, but enough chatting, let's see how her opponents felt.
Kennedy was already enthralled by the rib, ready to pounce down honey,
Mason also shared positive sentiments, saying how it smells good and – to my surprise– he said it's still falling off the bone.
Baby, they loved the rib and they said it was THAT good.
Shout out to grandma Moni!
No notes – let's get into her score.
Final score: 18
Mason is up and the plate looked – in his words – delectable.
He made some barbecue grilled salmon, grilled vegetables, and had a healthy scoop of mac and cheese that wasn't Velveeta.
No shade Kennedy.
For the barbecue sauce, he got it from his grandmother, but he told us a few ingredients: ketchup, mustard, and…a can of beer?
Interesting – let's taste it.
Moni wasn't too pleased – saying it was 'nothing special' while Kennedy had a better spirit about the dish and enjoyed her bites, despite being shocked by the combination of barbecue sauce and fish.
However, they both agreed on one thing, which is unfortunate for Mason: it didn't give old fashion barbecue.
Final score: 14
Now, before we close out, we had the Queen of Smiles and shade herself, Dr. Heavenly Kimes and her husband, Dr. Damon Kimes, try the dishes too.
They tried Kennedy's dish first – they weren't mad at the mac and cheese and the chicken, although Heavenly said it doesn't give barbecue.
Her score for Kennedy: 7
Now, it's time for her to judge Moni's dish – and she already is calling it cheap.
Whew lord.
Final score: 6
Now, for Mason's dish, they said it was 'really good' and fresh. They deemed it 'the best one' out of the three dishes.
Final score: 9.6
Ultimately, the win goes to Moni so pat on the back baby!

The James Beard Foundation Awards were held tonight, June 16, and Austin, Texas walked away with one big winner. Arjav Ezekiel, beverage director and co-owner of Birdie's in East Austin, won the Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service award. Ezekiel was born in New Delhi, India, and moved with his family to Portland, Oregon when he was 12 years old, where he gained foundational hospitality knowledge from his father, who worked in hotels. After stints working at restaurants in Washington, D.C., and New York, he eventually relocated to Austin and opened Birdie's with his wife and business partner Tracy Malechek-Ezekiel, who serves as Birdie's chef and co-owner. The wine program at Birdie's has been recognized in national food publications, including on Eater Austin, when Birdie's won an Eater Award for Best New Neighborhood Wine Bar in 2021. In January 2025, the James Beard Foundation recognized six Austin chefs and restaurants on its semifinalists list, while San Antonio earned seven nods, largely in the Best Chef: Texas category. On April 2, the foundation revealed its finalists: In the Best Chef: Texas category, Emil Oliva of San Antonio's Leche de Tigre and Michael Anthony Serva of Marfa, Texas's Bordo each received nods; the award ended up going to Thomas Bille of Belly of the Beast in Spring, Texas. Other finalists included Mixtli in San Antonio in the Outstanding Hospitality category; Atomix, a restaurant in New York City, took home that honor. The James Beard Awards, often considered 'the Oscars of food,' are among the most prestigious awards in the food and hospitality industry. CLARY When it comes to Black superheroes, many tend to hold King T'Challa, aka the one and only Black Panther, to the highest of standards — he's right up there with Statik Shock, Blade, John Stewart's Green Lantern and his often-depicted wifey, Storm, just to name a few. It's one of the main reasons why Blerds everywhere have been making quite a ruckus lately in reaction to the release of Marvel Knights: The World To Come #1, a polarizing plot that sees our beloved T'Challa dying on the throne and a whole white son named Ketema stepping up to take his place on the throne. …say what ?! Take a look below at a semi-spoilers description of The World To Come #1 by way of the well-informed duo curating @MastersOfComicBooks: RELATED: BLERD ALERT! Our Favorite Black Girl Nerds In Pop Culture As the official description given by Marvel reads, 'With T'Challa gone, the future of the Marvel 616 Universe will be determined by a final tribal challenge for the Wakandan throne and the mysterious victor who will change Wakanda, and the Marvel Universe, forever.' With Earth-616 being the primary universe that most Marvel comics pass through, the events of Marvel Knights: The World To Come could prove to be permanent. With that said, many are wondering if art will imitate life and result in a white actor filling the role of Black Panther in place of the late Chadwick Boseman, who helped bring the character to the big screen back in 2018. In the five years since his untimely death due to colon cancer, which also led to his exclusion from the 2022 sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever , the question has lingered as to whether BP will be recasted (likely), reworked in CGI form (very unlikely) or even retired to the bleachers as a tribute to Boseman (bittersweet). The fact that the character is seemingly a Caucasion son of two Black parents only raises more questions. Rather, the artist opted for something more pared down, using only light and sound, cinema's building blocks. McQueen bringsBassto Schaulager Basel, marking his return to the Swiss institution twelve years after his landmark eponymous exhibition. Originally co-commissioned by the Laurenz Foundation, Schaulager Basel and Dia Art Foundation, the workdebutedat Dia Beacon last year, where it transformed the museum's cavernous, post-industrial underground into an enveloping sensory field. The piece has since been adapted to complement Schaulager's own architectural character, flooding the space with a 40-minute, immersive presentation of low-frequency tones and spears of shifting hues. 'What I love about light and sound is that they are both created through movement and fluidity.' McQueen wrote in a recent statement. 'They can be molded into any shape, like vapor or a scent; they can sneak into any nook and cranny.' In-hand with this exploration of light – exquisite in its luminosity and imperceptible ebbs and flows – the piece also wrestles with familiar questions for McQueen: those of identity, absence and the trauma of the Black diaspora. Through the temporal-sensorial limbo that isBass,the artist hones in on the 'beginning points' of the 'all-encompassing' – psychological states, layered history, personal memory and the invisible forces that move us. Here, McQueen not only expands our limits of perception, but what we know his canon to be. In doing so,Bassfurther enhances and elaborates on his decades-long interrogation of the moving image, opening up new dimensions to his cinematic universe.
