Mike: Showbiz! review – a master rap craftsman building his own world

The Guardian31-01-2025

After a life spent bouncing between the UK and US – and, now, endlessly touring – New York rapper Mike's delivery has the hazy fug of waking up from a jetlag nap. Over mostly self-produced beats, his lyrics, often written freely in streams of consciousness, sit in cosy corners of cut-and-stitched samples, comparable with the drifting verses of his friend and mentor Earl Sweatshirt or the smoother edges of Buffalo's Westside Gunn. This approach won't always lead anywhere especially illuminating, but, much like his artistic idol MF Doom, the miniature worlds he moulds are consistently inviting.
On Showbiz! – his tenth album – Mike paints in the gaps between life on the road and his rootedness in the studio. These are fleeting fragments of songs, rarely running over a couple of minutes. But they are packed with rich detail: an anxious sax loop on The Weight (2k20) as Mike spirals over the death of his mother; on Pieces of a Dream, meandering keys pan drunkenly from left to right as he repeats: 'I ain't sober yet.' His lackadaisical style belies this close focus.
Recorded in phases at his home over the course of a year, Showbiz! often feels like something being worked out in real time. On Artist of the Century he rolls a refrain between his lips – 'The prize isn't much, but the price is abundant' – as if reminding himself that his craft, rather than the steady stream of acclaim he's become used to, is why he's really doing this.

Stacey Solomon looks incredible in a little white dress as she enjoys a work trip to Lake Como

Stacey Solomon cut a stylish figure in a little white dress as she documented her work trip to Lake Como. The singer, 35, took to Instagram on Sunday to give fans an insight into her trip, having jetted to Italy with Rehab, her haircare brand. Stacey looked incredible in the snaps as she posed in a square neck white dress that showed off her tanned and toned legs. The mother-of-five documented herself strolling around the grounds and admiring all the jasmine flowers as well as the architecture. She then changed into a black and white ensemble as she filmed content on a boat, admitting it wasn't a task for the 'faint hearted'. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Stacey's trip abroad comes after she suffered some heat recently when her followers turned on her over her ill-judged rant after losing out on a prize at the 2025 BAFTA Television Awards. However, while she congratulated the winners, Stacey couldn't help but reveal how 'gutted' she was for her team who 'deserved' the award as she declared that they were 'robbed'. Fans claimed Stacey is starting to 'show her true colours' compared to her usual wholesome demeanor and told the BBC presenter to 'grow up' and that she has 'got too big for her boots'. However not everyone agreed and others believed Stacey was being 'refreshingly honest' and was simply just 'disappointed for her team'. In the original video, Stacey fumed: 'We didn't win a BAFTA. And I know I'm supposed to take it gracefully like a champ but, I'll be honest, I'm devastated! Laughing at her reaction, she continued: 'I'm not handling it very well, I'm not taking it very gracefully - I'm devastated! I'm devastated for our whole team, like I'm so gutted for our team. 'Everyone got dressed up and was really hopeful, I think because they work so hard. It's not an easy show to make, Sort Your Life Out and the team work so hard to make it happen and they so deserve the BAFTA. 'The Sort Your Life Out team deserved a BAFTA and I'm devastated. I'm not saying that everyone else didn't deserve their BAFTAs, they absolutely did. 'People think making TV is really easy and it's not, so everyone deserves recognition. But I'm just gutted for my whole Sort Your Life Out family because I feel like they deserved a BAFTA. I'm gonna say it - I'm gutted!' Going on to reveal what it takes to make their show, she went on: 'We'll pack up a house and within seven days that house is packed up, into vans, over to a warehouse, laid out on the floor, we go through it meticulously, we make sure it doesn't just get chucked away. 'We donate, we recycle, we resell things. We put it all back and try and put it in systems to help families move forward...' She also gave a shout out to the families who give up their time and open their homes to TV audiences, especially when they run the risk of being judged. Professional organizer and Stacey's co-star Dilly Carter penned a somewhat more gracious message after losing out on the prize, noting that she was chuffed to even be nominated. Alongside a red carpet video, she said: 'Walking out, like we walked in, with our heads high and super proud of what we have achieved as a show, as a production. 'It's so easy in these moments to feel sad because we haven't won and forget about where we actually are. In a room full of incredible talent. But in the actual room. 'Some people dream of their show being nominated so for us to have been nominated twice is unreal. So let's celebrate the show and just how far it's come. It wasn't so long ago we were just filming a pilot. 'Huge congrats to @rylan and @robrinder. Thank you for all the love and support as always. Now let's get back to filming series 6.'

Artist paints Mike Peters while watching his funeral

Tanja Durrant, 54, who paints under the name of Gigsketch Art, grew up in North Wales and was inspired by The Alarm as a teenager. She first saw the band perform while supporting U2 at Cardiff Arms Park in the 1980s - the first-ever gig that she travelled to at the age of 16. The experience left a lasting impression on her as a young Welsh music fan. Years later, Tanja crossed paths with Mike Peters again - this time through the Love Hope Strength Foundation, the cancer charity he co-founded after his own health battles. Tanja joined Snowdon Rocks 2 to raise money for the charity and also in memory of her mother, a keen walker who died of leukaemia in 2005, nine years after her diagnosis. Tanja painting a tribute to Mike during the livestream of his funeral (Image: Tanja Durrant) Tanja, who has a 14-year-old son, said: "I remember it being a wet and windy midsummers day but that didn't dampen our spirits. I remember Mike singing before the walk, halfway up and on the summit. He was such a friendly, down to earth and humble man and took time to chat to us all. I took some photographs at the time from the summit, which was shrouded in low cloud and thought at the time, what a good painting it would make. I never did do that painting but over the years, I have focussed on drawing and painting at live gigs and performances and am now building my business as a full time freelance live event painter [Gigsketch Art]. "On learning of the open funeral at Dyserth for Mike, I wanted to attend but I live in Cornwall and couldn't make the journey so I decided to watch the livestream. I wanted to pay tribute to Mike and my memories of him so I did a painting of him whilst watching the funeral. Tanja painted the art from memory and by using photo references (Image: Tanja Durrant) "I hope to raise funds for Love Hope Strength by doing a limited edition print run of the painting, donating a percentage of the profits to the charity." Tanja, who usually paints live - at gigs, festivals and weddings and uses mainly acrylic paint for her art, painted the art from memory, photo and video reference. She said she felt "very connected" to Mike whilst doing the painting. The painting includes the bird that perched on Mike's guitar; The bird, identified as a Dipper - a short-tailed, stout bird, made its appearance when James Chippendale, co-founder of the Love Hope Strength Foundation, was paying tribute to his friend during the funeral service. Tanja said: "Just watching the funeral and remembering Mike in The Alarm and when they supported U2 made me feel very connected to Mike when I was painting. Mike was playing the guitar and we were singing along, It was a very special moment." Tanja, who has painted three murals at Glan Clwyd Hospital in Bodelwyddan, first got into sketching bands through a personal connection to Jools Holland; she knew one of his band members from a previous job with a touring cabaret theatre troupe. She said: "Having not seen my friend for a few years, I made some calls and blagged my way into a Jools Holland gig in Cardiff in 1999. I got to know them all and ended up travelling and sketching on the road with them after asking if I could sketch from the wings at a Llandudno outdoor gig the following year. "I ended up moving to London to caretake Jools's recording studio for a spell, meeting other Welsh greats such as Stereophonics and Tom Jones, and I was lucky enough to sketch at some of the later shows." Thousands of fans descended on Dyserth on Thursday, May 29 for Mike's funeral which was held at Parish Church of St Bridget and St Cwyfan. A large screen was set up outside the church. The funeral, broadcast on The Alarm's YouTube, has been watched by more than 100,000 people. Mike died aged 66 on April 29 from blood cancer. The musician was first diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) at the age of 36.
