Herry hails Aaron-Wooi Yik for brave run
KUALA LUMPUR: Herry IP had nothing but praise for Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik despite their first round exit in the Indonesia Open on Wednesday.
The national men's doubles head coach said their loss to Denmark's world No. 16 Rasmus Kjaer-Frederik Sogaard (21-13, 19-21, 21-18) was due to fatigue more than anything else.
Aaron-Wooi Yik were playing their fourth consecutive World Tour tournament, in Jakarta.
The world No. 3 duo had been on an extraordinary run, winning the Thailand Open, finishing runners-up at the Malaysia Masters and winning the Singapore Open before the Indonesia campaign.
Notably, Aaron-Wooi Yik had beaten Kjaer-Sogaard in the Malaysia Masters quarter-finals and Singapore Open last week.
"What Aaron-Wooi Yik have done is exceptional. They have been competing non-stop for the last four weeks from the Thailand to Indonesia Opens and have pushed themselves to the maximum," said Herry.
"There is no way the Denmark pair could have beaten Aaron-Wooi Yik if not for their extreme fatigue.
"I am happy with their progress and I believe Aaron-Wooi Yik are only going to get better in future tournaments."
Aaron-Wooi Yik's surge started at the Asian Championships (April 8-13) where they secured their first title of the year before adding two more World Tour titles in Thailand and Singapore to finally show the consistency that had been missing from the 2022 world champions.
The duo, who lost in seven finals from 2018-2024, have become more lethal since coming under Herry aka the Fire Dragon.
Aaron said on his Instagram story:

Joining Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin are Malaysia Masters champions Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, who defeated compatriots Junaidi Arif-Yap Roy King 14-21, 21-11, 21-15. The world No 7 pair will go up against India's Satwisairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty. In the mixed doubles, second seeds Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei lived up to expectations by reaching the quarter-finals after ousting Denmark's Mads Vestergaard-Christine Busch 21-9, 21-12 in just 31 minutes. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Goh Sze Fei- Nur Izzuddin Rumsani failed to make it an all-Malaysian semi-final in the men's doubles after they fell to Indonesian pair Sabar Karwayan Gutama- Reza Pahlevi Isfahani in three games. The Malaysian world No 1 pair were beaten 21-19, 9-21, 21-19 in a pulsating 56-minute match that had the home crowd at the Istora Senayan, Jakarta on their feet cheering. With this defeat, hopes of an all-Malaysian semi-final between Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin and their compatriots Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun failed to materialise. Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin have met the world No 8 pair thrice so far with the Indonesian pair winning twice. Earlier, world No 7 pair Wei Chong-Kai Wun defeated India's Chiraq Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy in straight games to qualify for the semi-finals. Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin won the India Open championship title in January but failed to advance beyond the quarter-finals since then. They have won eight BWF titles so far with the Super 1000 series being elusive. The Indonesian Open is one such event offering a total cash prize of US$1.45 million. The winners of the doubles events stand to earn US$107,300 (RM452,289), and the runners-up US$50,750 (RM214,520). The semi-finalists take home US$20,300 (RM85,898). Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin will take home US$9,062 (RM38,296) as quarter-finalists.

Indonesia's world No. 8 Sabar Karyaman Gutama-Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani were trailing 19-17 in the deciding game, but mounted a strong comeback to stun the top-ranked Malaysians 21-19, 9-21, 21-19 in Jakarta. Victory would have set up an all-Malaysian semi-final against world No. 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, who had earlier ousted India's world No. 22 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty 21-19, 21-16. Wei Chong-Kai Wun will now face Sabar-Moh Reza on Saturday, hoping to repeat their feat of reaching last year's final.
