Johnny Mayes: Footy legend who won premierships at two clubs is given weeks to live after getting horror health news
Footy legend Johnny Mayes only has weeks to live after a recent MRI scan revealed a 'very aggressive brain tumour'.
Mayes, 78, was the halfback in Jack Gibson's Roosters team who won back-to-back premierships in 1974 and 1975.
The local junior earlier defected to Manly in 1973 for one season, where he won a title before returning to the Tricolours.
The playmaker also represented Australia in the 1975 World Cup - and on Wednesday, former Manly teammate Peter 'Zorba' Peters paid tribute to Mayes.
'Little Monkey had a heart bigger than himself,' he told Daily Mail Australia.
'He replaced Dennis Ward from our 1972 inaugural premiership winning side after switching to Manly from Easts.
'Johnny was a brilliant running halfback and always a threat to the opposition defence. 'At Manly, he was conscious of his lethal outside backs with Bob Fulton and Ray Branighan in the centres and Ken Irvine and Max Brown on the wings.
'Mayes' job along with his five-eighth Ian Martin was to give them opportunities which they always did.
'Johnny was a team player through and through and a very popular person where ever he played.'
Mayes' son Glen labelled the brain tumour diagnosis a 'big shock to the family.'
'It is a very aggressive brain tumour. The doctors tell us his time is limited,' he told Wide World of Sports.
'Maybe a few weeks....if we are lucky a couple of months. 'The fortunate thing is that he is in no pain.
'He has paralysis down the left side of body and is also suffering from dementia. 'All we can do is try to make the most of the time he has left.'
On the Silvertails supporters website, footy fans passed on their best wishes.
'A shrewd recruit who made Manly great,' posted one.
'Very sad news....lovely fella - thoughts with him,' said another.

The Next Generation list of 2014 has turned out a mix of world-beaters and underwhelming products, with a collection of players born in 1997 originally tipped for the top Spotting the cream of the crop in football is one thing, but unearthing the next sensation is a whole different ball game. Each season ushers in a fresh wave of potential superstars, yet only a select few truly make their mark. It's been more than 10 years since The Guardian released its Next Generation Class of 2014, showcasing what were considered 40 of the world's top prospects born in 1997. Fast forward to today, and the whereabouts of these once-touted prodigies paint a diverse tapestry. Some have indeed lived up to the hype, while others have sadly drifted from the limelight, and a few have even hung up their boots already. Mirror Football revisits the list to see how these hopefuls have fared over the years and where they stand today. Topping the stakes is Ousmane Dembele, who was instrumental in Paris Saint-Germain's long-awaited Champions League triumph this season. Under the guidance of Luis Enrique, PSG clinched an unprecedented treble, with Dembele earning high praise and a distinct Ballon d'Or tip from his manager. "I would give the Ballon d'Or to Ousmane Dembele for the way he defended in this final," he said of the 2018 World Cup champion, who notched two assists in PSG's emphatic 5-0 win over Inter Milan. Tielemans, once a wonderkid at Anderlecht, has been lauded as one of Aston Villa's shrewdest acquisitions in recent memory and is now an integral part of Unai Emery's squad. The most tragic story from the 2014 class, however, is that of Abdelhak 'Appie' Nouri, who was making a name for himself in Ajax's first team when he suffered a cardiac arrest in July 2017. His life was irrevocably changed as he was forced to retire with permanent brain damage. He now seeks to raise awareness of heart-related issues in football through his foundation, which aims to install defibrillators at stadiums worldwide. David Beckham to be awarded knighthood next week after years of snubs
David Beckham will become a Sir when he is awarded a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours list next week with wife Victoria to be known as Lady Beckham. David Beckham is set to finally be awarded a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours list next week after years of being snubbed from the list. The England and Manchester United star finally becomes a Sir after calls for years to see him given the honour. Beckham, who turned 50 back at the start of May, has been a British icon for years and had long been tipped to become another of football's Sirs. His wife Victoria will be known as Lady Beckham, reports the Mirror. Beckham, who played 115 times for England, has continued to make notable donations to charity. He has also struck up a firm friendship with King Charles. The monarch dropped a hint last month when Beckham greeted Charles and Queen Camilla at the Chelsea Flower Show. The now Inter Miami co-owner made his name in Manchester, rising through the ranks before becoming England captain. His goal that saw the Three Lions qualify for the World Cup in 2002 remains one of his greatest moments. His profile exceeded football and he went on to play for the likes of Real Madrid, AC Milan and LA Galaxy before calling time on his career. Beckham remains adored by the public and actions, like queueing to pay his respects to Queen Elizabeth, only saw the love for him increase. The 50-year-old had been kept waiting in his bid to earn a knighthood, after failing to add to the OBE award he was given back in 2003. Years ago shocking emails were leaked in 2017, which may have set him back in his goal to receive a knighthood. He is said to have claimed he "didn't care about being knighted" - though the ex-midfielder has claimed some of the leaked emails had been doctored. The leaked emails claim Beckham said: "I expected nothing less. It's a disgrace to be honest and if I was American I would of got something like this 10 years ago." A close friend of Beckham exclusively told The Mirror in 2017: "To be honest, he does feel that he has given so much to his country. And sometimes you say things in private that anyone would say and you don't really mean it. "While he was frustrated in those emails, he was over it the moment he sent them.
