Home crowd fuels North West Flames' success in Telkom Netball League

The home crowd support at the Sun City Superbowl in Rustenburg has been credited with fanning the North West Flames in their strong start to the Telkom Netball League 2025.
The raucous crowd also roared Tshukudu, a Division 2 side from the province, to a convincing win over the Limpopo Lilies in an intense match on the second day of competition.
The Tshukudu supporters brought the house down with their energetic cheering and vibrant spirit, lifting the team. Their passionate backing clearly fuelled the players' confidence, helping Tshukudu maintain momentum and finish strongly.
Flames coach Elsunet du Plessis highlighted the significant role the crowd had played in their shock 60-57 win over the Jaguars from Gauteng in a thrilling and fast-paced match.
'I think it is amazing to have the crowd behind you because we are used to playing without any support with us," she said.
"It is a confidence booster to the players. It's just nice to know that there's someone there, there's a big crowd that really support us and I also just want to give a big shout out to the crowd and thank them for their support.
"I was just telling them (the players) that the question now is how much you want it. If you want to let it slip, let it slip but we didn't come this far to let it slip so we really need to work together and really play as a team to put us through."

Jaguars coach Roxanne Matthyse commended her side's opening performance, highlighting the impact of her three debutants and their ability to stick to the game plan.
'It was a very difficult for us, we started slow and it was like playing catch up the whole time. But we would rather have this happening in the beginning of the leg and not towards the end. A lot of lessons for me as a coach and for my players.
"Taking accountability, for one, it didn't work for us on attack. Every time you think find confidence and you build on that, there's a mistake.
"For the Jaguars that's not how we play. You know we set a high standard, and we need to make sure we maintain that standard,' added Matthyse.
It was a baptism of fire for last year's beaten finalists. And things were set to only get tougher with a repeat of last year's decider against Free State Crinums rounding off Monday's play.

Bafana struggle This was a painful watch in general, however, as Bafana laboured to break down a Tanzanian side that seemed content with a draw from kick off. Three players were handed their Bafana debuts from the start against Tanzania. Orlando Pirates pair Deano Van Rooyen and Simphiwe Selepe along with TS Galaxy's Khulumani Ndumane got their chance to shine on the international stage. It was one of Bafana's regulars, Oswin Appollis, who shone in the first half. In just the fourth minute, the Polokwane City forward pounced on a mistake in the Tanzania penalty area, but his effort was cleared off the line. On the half hour mark, a neat passing move found Thalente Mbatha in space on the edge of the box, but he fired way off target. And on the stroke of half time, it was Appollis who threatened again, his long-range strike comfortably saved by Tanzania goalkeeper Suleiman Ali. In truth, the first half was a difficult watch, with neither side really able to string too much together in the attacking third. Greater intent Bafana came out with far more intent after the break. Tshepang Moremi nearly latched onto Mbatha's fine long range pass. Moremi then saw his fizzing long-range effort tipped wide by Ali. And Mofokeng blew a great chance to score in stoppage time when he was gifted possession and chipped the ball over Ali but onto the roof of the net.

David Beckham to be awarded knighthood by King Charles

The former England football captain is set to be named in the King's Birthday Honours List, according to the BBC and other sources. Other sporting figures who have been awarded the title include Beckham's former manager at Manchester United, Alex Ferguson, and British tennis great Andy Murray. The Sun newspaper said he would take the title of "sir" and his wife Victoria, a former member of the Spice Girls pop group, will be known as Lady Beckham. The WTC starts on Wednesday at Lord's, in London, and Paterson, who played seven Tests for SA between 2020 and 2024, said the conditions will be foreign for both sides. With no hint of rain predicted for the first two days of the clash, making the most of the best batting conditions could prove pivotal. Using the dukes cricket ball could take some adjustment, but if they are asked to bowl first, the Proteas attack led by Kagiso Rabada would be up to the task, believed Paterson.
