Some 200 arrested at protest against NATO summit in The Hague
The HaguecColor:> Some 200 people were arrested as Dutch police cleared a protest on the sidelines of a high-stakes NATO summit held in the city of The Hague on Wednesday.
Extinction Rebellion climate activists briefly blocked parts of a key motorway to demonstrate against the gathering which saw NATO leaders, including US President Donald Trump, approving a unprecedented hike in defence spending.
They also protested against Israel's actions in Gaza.
Police clashed with demonstrators in isolated cases during the arrests, according to reporters at the scene, with officers said to have used batons. (DPA)

United States President Donald Trump has called for Israel to cancel the corruption trial of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, or grant him a pardon, describing the case against the Israeli leader as a 'witch-hunt'. Trump issued the call on Wednesday on behalf of his close Israeli ally, who was indicted in 2019 in Israel on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust. Israeli media have reported that cross-examination of Netanyahu began on June 3 in a Tel Aviv court and was expected to take about a year to complete. Israeli President Isaac Herzog has the power to pardon Netanyahu, but has been quoted by Israeli media as saying that a pardon is 'not currently on the table'. Herzog also said that 'no such request had been made', according to the reports. Trump also said in his post: 'It was the United States of America that saved Israel, and now it is going to be the United States of America that saves Bibi Netanyahu.' It was unclear what Trump or the US government could do to stop Netanyahu's corruption trial. Trump's words of support for Netanyahu contrasted with the rare public rebuke he issued against the Israeli leader on Tuesday over Israel's post-ceasefire strikes on Iran. 'Israel, as soon as we made the deal, they came out and they dropped a load of bombs, the likes of which I've never seen before. The biggest load that we've seen. I'm not happy with Israel,' Trump told reporters at the time. Iran and Israel, he added, had been fighting 'so long and so hard that they don't know what the f*** they're doing'.

Moscow's Vnukovo International Airport suspended departures and arrivals in response to the threat, news agencies quoted aviation watchdog Rosaviatsiya as saying. Restrictions were also in place for a time at airports along the Volga River. The governor of the Russian region of Voronezh, which borders Ukraine, reported that more than 40 Ukrainian drones had been destroyed throughout the day. dpa The Hague US President Donald Trump has said his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of a NATO summit 'couldn't have been nicer.' When asked during a post-summit press conference about his meeting with the Ukrainian leader, Trump said it was 'very nice,' admitting 'we had a little rough times sometimes.' Trump and Zelensky clashed in a tense and highly public Oval Office meeting in February, broadcast live, when the US president accused the Ukrainain of 'gambling with World War III.' After that meeting, Washington temporarily suspended military aid to Ukraine including vital battlefield intelligence, and a minerals deal was initially left unsigned. Relations appeared to have since thawed, with Trump and Zelensky meeting one-on-one on the sidelines of pope Francis' funeral in April. Unlike at last year's summit, Zelensky was not invited to attend formal consultations among leaders but only joined events on the sidelines, in what is believed to reflect US opposition to Ukrainian NATO membership. In a post on X, Zelensky described the meeting as 'long and substantive,' saying more details would follow.
