U20 AFCON: Ouahbi Targets Semifinal Berth and World Cup Qualification

Morocco World10-05-2025

Rabat – Morocco's U20 national team coach, Mohamed Ouahbi, has praised his squad's strong performance in the group stage of the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, currently taking place in Egypt.
Speaking to the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), Ouahbi also acknowledged the greater challenge posed by the upcoming knockout stage, starting with a tough quarterfinal against Sierra Leone.
'We finished top of the group. It's well-deserved. We're very satisfied with this first round, but we know we can do better, that we can still grow in this competition,' said Ouahbi. 'I have a lot of confidence in this group. I know them well, I know what they're capable of, and especially what they've already shown in the first three matches.'

The coach stressed the need for a mental shift as the tournament moves into the knockout rounds: 'Knockout games are a different story. We need to maintain our performance level and stay solid. We're confident. We'll be facing Sierra Leone, a team that's physically very strong, with players of impressive size. On our side, we need to rely on our strengths: technique, teamwork, combinations, and positional play.'
Ouahbi also warned against underestimating Sierra Leone's individual talents.
'They have players who can make a difference. Their 4-1 win against Egypt was no accident,' he said. 'They lost to South Africa, but that allowed them to rotate their squad. We know them well. We had studied them before and analyzed them again recently. We're aware of their strengths and weaknesses.'
The coach concluded with a clear objective: 'Our goal is to qualify for the semifinals, which would also secure us a spot in the World Cup.'
The Atlas Cubs topped Group B with seven points, following victories over Kenya (3-2) and Tunisia (3-1), and a goalless draw with Nigeria.
The national team will play their quarterfinal match against Sierra Leone next Monday at 4:00 p.m. (GMT+1). Tags: AFCON 2025afcon u20Mohamed OuahbiMorocco U20

Franco Mastantuono: The Argentine Wonderkid Pitching PSG against Real Madrid

River Plate's midfielder Franco Mastantuono has become one of South America's most closely watched prospects, drawing interest from European giants Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. Real Madrid's chief scout, Juni Calafat, travelled to Buenos Aires this week for discussions with River Plate executives and Mastantuono's entourage, with Los Blancos prepared to activate his $45 million release clause. Madrid's plan would allow the Argentine to remain at River Plate until the end of the year, as they did in 2023 with the Arda Güler transfer saga. The 17-year-old midfielder, who has scored 7 goals and 4 assists in 19 appearances this season, has also received his first call-up to the Argentina squad for World Cup qualifying fixtures in June. Meanwhile, reliable sports journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that PSG is also pushing to secure Mastantuono's signature. PSG believes it can leverage its recent European success to convince the young midfielder who has expressed a preference for the French club. Mastantuono was born in Azul, Buenos Aires Province. He signed his first professional contract with River Plate in August 2023, which included a €45 million release clause. River Plate's youth manager Martín Pellegrino has praised Mastantuono's left-footed versatility: 'He can operate as a forward, an 'enganche' or a playmaker.' Assistant coach Pablo Fernández also said: 'His prowess in one-on-one situations and dead-ball scenarios. Mastantuono cites Julián Álvarez, Phil Foden, and Neymar as inspirations for his dynamic, free-flowing style.' As both Real Madrid and PSG seek his signature, Mastantuono seems destined to follow in the footsteps of Julian Alvarez, Diego Maradona, Carlos Tevez, and Sergio Agüero, potentially securing a high-profile move to Europe in January 2026. Brahim Diaz Out, Amine Zahzouh Gets First Morocco Call-Up

Real Madrid midfielder Brahim Diaz has been ruled out of Morocco's upcoming friendlies against Tunisia and Benin with a muscle injury. Morocco team doctor Christophe Baudot confirmed the news on Tuesday, saying Diaz is continuing treatment at the Mohammed VI Football Complex. 'He won't be ready in time for the Tunisia match,' said Baudot. 'We'll assess his progress ahead of the second game.' Diaz started Madrid's final league match against Real Sociedad but was forced off in the 55th minute. His absence is a blow for Walid Regragui, who is already dealing with several injuries in the squad. Nayef Aguerd, Noussair Mazraoui, Ghanem Saïss and Chemsdine Talbi are all unavailable, while Abdessamad Ezzalzouli remains a doubt. In response, Regragui has handed a first senior call-up to FAR Rabat midfielder Amine Zahzouh, one of the standout players in Morocco's top flight this season. Zahzouh scored 11 goals and provided 13 assists in 43 appearances, finishing the campaign as the Botola Pro's top playmaker. The 23-year-old was already training with Morocco's local-based national team at Maâmora and joined the senior squad for Tuesday's session. Morocco are preparing for two friendlies in Fez against Tunisia on June 6, and Benin on June 9. The matches are part of the build-up to next year's Africa Cup of Nations on home soil. Despite the growing injury list, the camp remains in high spirits. Tuesday's session included a guard of honour for players who won silverware with their clubs this season. Brahim Diaz to miss Tunisia and Benin friendlies, Ezzalzouli doubtful

Brahim Diaz will miss the next two friendly matches for the Atlas Lions against Tunisia and Benin, confirmed the national team's doctor, Christophe Boudoux, who also noted that Abdessamad Ezzalzouli's status remains «very uncertain». «Diaz will be absent. To be clear, his injury is not recoverable», Dr. Boudoux stated in a short video published on the Moroccan Royal Football Federation's (FRMF) YouTube channel. Additionally, the team doctor mentioned an «agreement reached» with Club Bruges to rest Chemsdine Talbi while determining the exact nature of his injury. Nayef Aguerd, Romain Saïss, and Noussair Mazraoui are also sidelined due to injuries. The friendlies against Tunisia and Benin are scheduled for June 6 and 9 at the Fès Sports Complex.
