Trump expected to visit the 'Alligator Alcatraz' detention facility this week

NBC News10 hours ago

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — President Donald Trump is expected to be in attendance Tuesday at the formal opening of a controversial immigration detention center in the Florida Everglades that state leaders have dubbed ' Alligator Alcatraz.'
The Palm Beach Post on Sunday reported that FAA data indicated that Trump would be in South Florida for the opening of the facility. Two White House officials and one Florida official familiar with the travel confirmed to NBC News Trump is 'likely' to be in attendance.
The facility is located on a little-used airstrip in Miami-Dade County that Gov. Ron DeSantis' administration seized using emergency powers to build a housing facility for undocumented migrants. DeSantis issued an emergency order focused on immigration in early 2023, and he has since extended it multiple times. The measure gives him significant authority to take actions such as seizing land. Some local political leaders in Miami-Dade County opposed DeSantis taking the land for the Everglades-based detention center.
The facility was set up quickly — in roughly one week — by the DeSantis administration and was the brain child of Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, who is DeSantis' former chief of staff and one of his top political advisers.
Environmental groups on Friday filed a lawsuit trying to block the plan, arguing it could have devastating effects on the Everglades.
'The site is more than 96% wetlands, surrounded by Big Cypress National Preserve, and is habitat for the endangered Florida panther and other iconic species,' said Eve Samples, executive director of Friends of the Florida Everglades, which is among the groups suing. 'This scheme is not only cruel, it threatens the Everglades ecosystem that state and federal taxpayers have spent billions to protect.'
Hundreds of people also turned out for a protest Saturday against the construction of the facility, which is expected to have 5,000 immigrant detention beds.
"Alligator Alcatraz" has been hyped as the most high-profile example of Florida pushing to be the state that most aggressively tries to align with Trump's immigration agenda.
The facility is estimated to cost $450 million annually, and it has received approval from the Department of Homeland Security, which has said it is likely to reimburse the state for at least some costs associated with operation.
The facility has received significant national attention, resulting in a media and political boon for both Uthmeier and DeSantis, who on Friday gave a tour of the facility to Fox News.
Beyond the significant national media attention, political fundraising is up for both Uthmeier and the Republican Party of Florida, which has started selling branded merchandise off the idea, NBC News reported Saturday.

Trump live updates: Congress to vote on ‘Big, Beautiful Bill' in defining moment for president's second term

President Donald Trump 's 'Big, Beautiful Bill' will be subjected to an unlimited series of amendment votes in the Senate on Monday. The 940-page tax and spending bill, which maps out much of the president's domestic legislative agenda, narrowly passed the House of Representatives last month and scraped through the Senate on Saturday night 51-49 after Majority Leader John Thune and Vice President JD Vance managed to persuade most Republican dissenters to fall in line. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has warned that passage of the bill will add an estimated $3.3trn to the United States's $36.2trn national debt over the next decade, which Democrats hope will give conservative fiscal hawks cause for concern. Trump himself has urged his party to push through the bill regardless and ignore objections raised by the Senate parliamentarian about several of its provisions as its July 4 deadline looms. Senators will start voting on the amendments, on what could prove to be a very long day, from 9am ET (2pm GMT) on Monday. GB News announces expansion into the US

GB News is expanding into the US with a new live nightly show hosted by Bev Turner. The news channel, launched in 2021, will open a new bureau in Washington DC as it launches its services across the Atlantic. The two-hour programme will begin in September from a studio 'close to the White House' and will 'bring British audiences closer than ever to the political news which unfolds each day in America'. The programme will feature 'headline-making exclusives, thought-provoking interviews with major figures, and in-depth analysis of the Trump presidency as well as stories from across the US', according to GB News. The move includes an extension of GB News' distribution across the US, with content to be made available free to American audiences. Turner said: 'With the gutsiest guests and the most iconic backdrops, I intend to keep viewers up late. Fronting the next stage of GB News's evolution is both a huge honour and an immense responsibility, and I cannot wait to represent the people's channel on a global stage. 'We will be disrupting the late-night TV space as the next day's papers land in the UK and America's prime-time analysis gears up. This affords us the chance to deliver a unique UK-USA hybrid of political, cultural and social issues from the start-line of global politics. 'We will fulfil the need for a British voice with an international perspective to help our viewers get a sense of who's really on their side. 'Tapping into Washington's heartbeat and delivering real-time perspective with editorial edge, the show will be alive, and a conversation that's punchy, intelligent and unmissable. What happens in DC reverberates in GB and we will capture every moment. 'Our highly engaged British audience understands how events in the US are directly impacting government policy and living standards here. 'We have a job to do: bridging the gap between British and American politics in the fearless style that typifies GB News. 'We will include the very best guests that Washington has to offer, alongside quintessentially British voices in an unparalleled assessment of events on both sides of the Atlantic. 'This isn't just a media experiment, this is a market intervention. And I look forward to leading it from the front.' Turner, 51, who began presenting her own show on GB News in 2022, previously hosted a talk show on LBC and has appeared on ITV's This Morning and Good Morning Britain. Michael Booker, GB News editorial director, said: 'This is a huge moment for GB News as we grow our presence and deliver more of the fearless journalism that defines us. 'The world's biggest political story is playing out in Washington, and its impact is being felt daily in towns and cities across Britain. 'More than ever before, what happens in the USA is having huge consequences, both socially and economically, for the people of Britain. 'We've seen time and again this year that a decision made on one day in Washington DC is felt the next day in Washington, Tyne and Wear. 'It's essential the people's channel is right there, reporting live, asking the tough questions, and telling it like it is. 'While others scale back on live free coverage, GB News is investing in our content. 'Our new Washington investment, our expanded programming and our brilliant on-the-ground team will ensure we're not just reporting on the story but that we're right at the heart of it.'

The 47th US President is allegedly set to embark on a trip to his Scottish golf courses at the end of July according to the MailOnline. Trump has a meeting with King Charles pencilled in, with rumours swirling the encounter could take place at Balmoral or Dumfries House. However, it is understood their diaries clash, the Record reports. Trump was invited for an unprecedented second State Visit likely to take place in September. MailOnline reported that in the final two weeks of July, security services are preparing for Air Force One to fly into Prestwick Airport with Trump having a ring of steel thrown around him amid anticipated protests. The US president will likely visit Turnberry, which was vandalised by pro-Palestine protesters in March, and his Trump International controversial course in Aberdeen, which has had claims lodged against it that it destroyed one of the world's rarest sand dune systems. It's also thought that Trump may visit his new Aberdeenshire course, the MacLeod Trump International Golf Links course - named in honour of his Lewis-born mother, Mary Anne MacLeod - which is set to open before mid-August. Trump has repeatedly asked Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer about hosting The Open at Turnberry, which he bought in 2014 for £46 million, but the organisers have yet to concede to his demands. His son, Eric Trump, said recently: "Turnberry is considered to be the best golf course in the world by the players, the writers, the spectators and the entire golfing community. "If we get the call, and I sincerely hope we do, I promise the Royal and Ancient that we will be the best hosts The Open Championship has ever seen." It was signed by over 6000 people. First Minister John Swinney condemned the president following his heated exchange with Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office earlier this year.
