Johnny Rodriguez, Country Music Star, Dead at 73

New York Times11-05-2025

Johnny Rodriguez, who became the first Mexican American country music star with a string of hits, died on Friday. He was 73.
His daughter, Aubry Rodriguez, announced his death in a social media post on Saturday. The post did not cite a cause of death.
Rodriguez rose to fame in the 1970s and was best known for the hits 'Ridin' My Thumb to Mexico' and 'You Always Come Back (to Hurting Me).' He released six singles that reached No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart, and nine others reached the Top 10. In 2007, Rodriguez was inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame, which described him as the 'greatest and most memorable Chicano Country singer of all time.'
Juan Raoul Davis Rodriguez was born on Dec. 10, 1951, in Sabinal, Texas, around 65 miles west of San Antonio. A list of survivors was not immediately available.
Rodriguez, the second youngest of 10 children, started playing guitar at the age of 7 when his older brother, Andres, bought him one. Their father died of cancer when Rodriguez was 16, around the same time Rodriguez formed a band, and Andres died the next year. The losses sent him 'spiraling,' according to the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame.
Rodriguez had spent time in jail by the time he was 18 for what is said to be an unpaid fine. He would pass time in the cell by singing and was overheard by Joaquin Jackson, a Texas Ranger, who eventually helped find Rodriguez a job as a singer and stagecoach driver at the Alamo Village, then a popular tourist attraction in Texas.
The country musicians Tom T. Hall and Bobby Bare heard Rodriguez performing at the Alamo in 1971 and invited him to Nashville. Rodriguez, then 20, brought just his guitar and $14. Shortly after his arrival, he became a lead guitarist in Hall's band.
In 1973, Rodriguez released his debut single and first Top 10 single, 'Pass Me By (If You're Only Passing Through).' His next three singles — 'You Always Come Back (to Hurting Me),' 'Ridin' My Thumb to Mexico' and 'That's the Way Love Goes' — all topped the charts. He was also nominated for the Country Music Association's male vocalist of the year award in 1973 and won the Billboard Trend Setter Award for first Mexican American to capture a national audience.
In 1979, Rodriguez parted ways with his record label, Mercury, and signed with Epic. Three more of his songs — 'Down on the Rio Grande,' Foolin'' and 'How Could I Love Her So Much' — later reached the Top 10. He continued making music into the 1990s.
In 1999, a jury acquitted Rodriguez of murder in the killing of an acquaintance he said was a burglar. The acquaintance, Israel Borrego, 26, was fatally shot once in the abdomen in 1998 at Rodriguez's home in Sabinal. Lawyers for Rodriguez argued that he was justified under Texas law to defend himself and his property.
The singer, who was facing life in prison, rested his face in his hands as the verdict was announced. 'I'm just sorry that the whole incident took place,' he said. 'I don't want to go through anything like this again.'
In 2010, he received the Pioneer Award from the Institute of Hispanic Culture, and in 2019, he was given the Living Legend Award from the Country Music Association of Texas. He released 35 albums in his four-decade career.
During an interview in 2019, Rodriguez advised young artists to always write their own material.
'It separates you from everybody else,' he said. 'If you're really honest about it, that's the hardest part,' he added. 'It's like taking your clothes off in front of somebody.'

'Pure Country' Blu-Ray Review - George Strait Makes Screen Debut In Familiar Music Drama

George Strait makes his film debut in an entertaining look into the heart and soul of country music from Young Guns director Christopher Cain. Superstar Dusty Chandler (Strait) is tired of the showbiz grind. One day, something snaps, and Dusty takes 'a little walk,' ditching his beard and ponytail — and, temporarily, his career — to reclaim his down-home roots. But his manager (Lesley Ann Warren) retaliates: A stand-in (Kyle Chandler) lip-syncs his songs in concert. And a romance with a lovely rancher (Isabel Glasser) is on-again, off-again like a rodeo cowboy. The simple life can be so complex, but it's nothing a revitalized country boy can't handle! For thoughts on Pure Country, please check out my thoughts on No Streaming Required: Video Quality Pure Country was re-released on Blu-Ray courtesy of Warner Archive in 2019 after first being released by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment exclusively as a part of a two-pack with its DTV sequel in 2012. The disc itself is the same 1080p master sourced from a 2K scan of the interpositive released in 2012. The transfer shows its age in some respects, but it largely holds up pretty well for the material. There is some nice natural film grain intact and resolved well. There is not much in the way of compression artifacts or other such digital anomalies outside of banding from the smoke machine. This disc capably showcases the rural settings and venue interiors. The clarity is not perfectly crisp, but there is plenty of detail to be found in the production design. Some natural colors saturate the picture well enough. Skin tones look natural, and the presentation offers up decent highlights and serviceable black levels. Warner Archive has kept a fine disc in print. Audio Quality Warner Archive delivers a Blu-Ray with a solid DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio mix that more than gets the job done. The focus of the narrative is music, so it is heartening to report that the fidelity remains in good shape with crisp notes and vocals. The same goes for any introduction of the score that guides the mood of the story. There are no age defects to the track such as pops, hissing or audio dropouts. Dialogue flows clearly within each exchange. Some active environmental effects give the experience a bit of grandeur, but the quieter moments on the farm come to life just as well. This is a good track that accomplishes what it needs to. Optional English (SDH), French, and Spanish subtitles are provided on this disc. Special Features I Cross My Heart Music Video (3:39) Theatrical Trailer (2:02) Final Thoughts Pure Country takes a very familiar story and introduces a major country star into the proceedings to mostly entertaining results. The disillusioned artist who has to rediscover the love of their craft is nothing new, but this Hallmark-level material is given a boost thanks to the direction of Christopher Cain and a talented ensemble with the likes of Lesley Ann Warren and Kyle Chandler. George Strait was never destined to be a serious actor, but he holds up well enough to give the story some weight. This film will mostly be for fans of Strait or those who appreciate easygoing adult dramas, but if you are indeed looking for that, it delivers. Warner Archive has brought back a Blu-Ray featuring a straightforward A/V presentation and a smattering of special features. Recommended Pure Country can be purchased directly through MovieZyng or through various other online retailers. Candace Cameron Bure Says Horror Films Can Open ‘Portal' That Is ‘Incredibly Demonic'

Candace Cameron Bure seems fully convinced that horror films can open 'a portal.' The 'Full House' alum has frequently espoused her Christian values publicly, including her preference for a meek and 'submissive' role in marriage, but went a little further afield this week by arguing that television can 'let stuff inside' the home that is 'demonic.' The actor presented her personal 'portal' theory on Tuesday's episode of 'The Candace Cameron Bure Podcast' and admitted that her kids — Lev, Natasha and Maksim — mock her for it 'all the time.' Social media users who heard her out are currently doing the same. 'Like if you're watching this, or you're playing this video game, or whatever, that's a portal that could let stuff inside our home,' said Bure on the podcast. 'I don't even want someone watching a scary movie in our house on the TV, because to me, that's just a portal.' The actor reminded viewers that she's in the film industry and understands how movies are made, but nonetheless argued there can still be 'something incredibly demonic' to the results, which her guest, Texas-based pastor Jonathan Pokluda, audibly agreed with. Bure's philosophy appears to extend even to everyday products, such as water. 'I feel like it's a portal that gets opened up, and that just reminded me, you've posted something a while back about Liquid Death,' she told Pokluda. 'You're like, 'Do you want to buy a product that is literally being cursed as it's going out into distribution?'' The pastor shared such sentiments on social media earlier this year, declaring that he is 'super out' on the beverage company for a marketing campaign cheekily asking customers to 'sell your soul' to join its 'Liquid Death Country Club.' 'They are asking you to sell your soul to them and hired a witch to curse their drinks,' Pokluda wrote on Instagram in February. 'Spread the word. If you're like, 'OK, Karen, they are just having fun.' Please grab a copy of 'Your Story Has a Villain.'' Pokluda's book aims to teach readers how to 'identify spiritual warfare' and 'defeat the enemy.' His claim that a witch cursed Liquid Death's products, meanwhile, appears to be based on a 2019 marketing stunt for a run of Halloween-themed drinks. The company also claimed in an advertisement in 2022 to have bought an actual witch a Super Bowl ticket. While most customers likely see these stunts as mere promotional ploys, devout Christians Pokluda and Bure appear to be unconvinced. 'This is how he works,' Pokluda said about the devil. 'I'm telling you, he tries to disguise under that stuff. That's what he wants you to feel. If you ever are like, 'Oh, I'm not going to be impacted by that,' that's what Satan wants you to feel. That's the whole essence of it.' His comments prompted affirmative nods from Bure, who added, 'Yeah.' Honeygirl Debuts 'Denim & Diamonds,' Inspired by Her Real-Life Love Story with Gin Blossoms Guitarist

Country Artist Honeygirl Debuts 'Denim & Diamonds,' Inspired by Her Real-Life Love Story with Gin Blossoms Guitarist PHOENIX, AZ, UNITED STATES, June 13, 2025 / / -- Country singer-songwriter Honeygirl has released her latest single, ' Denim & Diamonds,' a heartfelt track inspired by her recent marriage to longtime partner Scotty Johnson, guitarist for the Grammy-nominated band Gin Blossoms. The single, co-written by Honeygirl, the stage name of Kira Brown, and Johnson, blends the artists' signature storytelling with rich country instrumentation. The couple, who have shared 15 years together, recently tied the knot in a Phoenix courthouse, marking a new chapter both personally and professionally. 'Scotty wanted to marry me. So I wrote, 'Denim & Diamonds,'' Brown shared on social media. The song is available for streaming on YouTube, Amazon Music and Apple Music. Produced by Brown and Johnson, the track also features Sandra Leen, wife of Gin Blossoms bassist Bill Leen, on cello. 'I wanted this song to be perfect and I went round and round on edits and mixes and ideas, because it could have been our wedding song, had we not eloped. The words are basically written instructions for Scotty on how to love and keep me forever - 'buy me Denim & Diamonds and tell me I'm pretty,'' said Brown, quoting lyrics from her own song. Honeygirl, known for her powerful storytelling and dynamic performances, continues to captivate audiences with her unique sound. Fronted by Brown and featuring seasoned musicians like Johnson, Honeygirl aims to bring together 'good timing fans & friends' at every performance.
