Walgreens to close 500 stores before August. Is Oklahoma affected?
Walgreens announced more closures are on the horizon in 2025.
The company planned to close about 1,200 underperforming stores in October to offset declining profits. Most of the lowered profits are the result of low drug reimbursement rates and sluggish retail sales.
About 25% of Walgreens stores were 'not currently contributing to our long-term strategy,' Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. CEO Timothy Wentworth said in June 2024 during a quarterly financial call.
Here's what to expect for the future of the company.
All of the 1,200 stores will not be closed in 2025. Instead, roughly 500 stores will close in fiscal year 2025, which ends in August 2025, Walgreens said.
In the company's first quarter, from September to November, 70 stores were closed. They plan to close another 450 before the end of 2025.
It is not known if any Oklahoma stores will close currently.
There are 50 Oklahoma cities that have at least one Walgreens, according to their website. Shoppers may contact their local Walgreens to see if it is potentially affected.

‘We're not going anywhere': Community comes together to support businesses on Colfax during construction
DENVER (KDVR) — For months now, businesses have been feeling the impact of a year-long construction project putting a bus lane on Colfax. 'It was a nightmare and still kind of is, I mean, just today this week is new where we lost a bunch of sidewalk, which is brand new to us this week,' co-owner of Lion's Liar, Michael Thorne, said. Credit card skimmers found on pumps at popular gas station in Aurora But now the community is stepping up with events like the Bigwig Bar Crawl put on by Colfax Ave, a group designed to bring the community together in the area. Those at the crawl said it is just a part of being in the community. 'I think since all the construction started, you know I have hurt people talking, saying it is hurting businesses,' Kathryn Teeple, who attended the event, said. 'To come out and get a group of people to come together to try and go around, have fun and support the businesses.' Thorne said the community has had to rally together, even the Walgreens in the area offered their parking lot to help the live music acts that come through the bar. 'Any parking that we had, and so is everybody else here, but Walgreens luckily gives us their parking lot to use, which is great, especially since we're a live music venue, so we need somewhere to load music in,' Thorne said. With the construction expected to finish in 2027 and the roads and sidewalks opening back up Thorne says they will push through, just like they have in the past. 'We're not going anywhere, no matter what, no matter, I mean, we have survived a lot and we are going to continue on it,' Thorne said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Rite Aid Closing Over 100 Stores This June
Rite Aid will close the doors to over a hundred stores this month. As of early May, the pharmacy operated over 1,200 stores across the U.S., according to Newsweek. The company has filed for bankruptcy for the second time since October 2023, and continues to face obstacles in the "rapidly evolving retail and healthcare landscape," according to CEO Matt Schroeder. According to Penn Live, store closures will occur in Pennsylvania, California, New York, and nine other states. In total, 111 stores will shut down — that number is in addition to the 361 Rite Aid closures previously announced. Rite Aid has "entered into agreements" with companies like CVS Pharmacy, Walgreens, Albertsons, Kroger, and Giant Eagle to obtain its pharmacy assets. In May, Reuters reported that Rite Aid entered bankruptcy with over $2 billion in debt. Their earlier filing for bankruptcy in October 2023 came after they reported $750 million in losses. This most recent filing marks the fourth notice of store closings. According to Healthcare Finance News, Rite Aid blames its struggles on the "cost of more than 1,600 opioid lawsuits, a downturn in the economy, tariffs, and increased costs from suppliers." Rising operating costs and competition from online retailers have also factored into these closures. Rite Aid closure announcements come shortly after news that CVS will also be closing many stores in 2025. Over 270 CVS locations will shut down in 2025, according to Kiplinger, as "part of a multi-year restructuring effort and reflect a broader shift underway across the retail healthcare industry." In 2021, CVS Health announced that over 300 stores would close over three years. 'The company has been evaluating changes in population, consumer buying patterns and future health needs to ensure it has the right kinds of stores in the right locations for consumers and for the business."Rite Aid Closing Over 100 Stores This June first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 4, 2025 Sign in to access your portfolio
