Saturday is Free Adventure Day at Nevada state parks; 3 events near Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Free Adventure Day on Saturday, June 14, offers Nevadans an opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy state parks without paying an entrance fee.
Jump in the car and check out popular places like Valley of Fire, Big Bend of the Colorado or Cathedral Gorge. Check the state's website for details on all the state parks. And three Southern Nevada state parks have events scheduled on Saturday:
OLD LAS VEGAS HISTORIC MORMON FORT: Pioneer Heritage Day is scheduled Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon, featuring special recognition of direct descendants of early Las Vegas pioneers. Crafts and games are planned, and booths will be staffed by organizations to celebrate the event and provide information. The park is in downtown Las Vegas, on the southeast corner of Las Vegas Boulevard North and E. Washington Avenue.
ICE AGE FOSSILS STATE PARK: The newest state park will host special guest Rachel VanHorn, a zoologist and science teacher, who will talk about hummingbirds and how to identify common species. The 'coffee talk' program is scheduled to run from 9-11 a.m. Protectors of Tule Springs, the park's nonprofit partner, will also be on hand to educate the public.
SPRING VALLEY STATE PARK: Coinciding with a free fishing day, when anyone can fish without a license, Spring Valley State Park northeast of Pioche in Lincoln County is putting on Kids' Fishing Derby. Prizes will be awarded for the smallest and largest fish in each age group. This one is three hours away from Las Vegas, so make an early start for the 8-11 a.m. event.
'Free Adventure Day is a great opportunity for Nevadans and out-of-state visitors to discover the sites and recreational opportunities in our state parks,' Bob Mergell, Nevada State Parks administrator, said. 'Whether you're hiking, boating, picnicking, or enjoying nature, we hope everyone will take advantage of this special day.'
Official encourage visitors to bring plenty of water, wear sunscreen, dress in layers and follow Leave No Trace principles.
While entrance fees are waived on June 14, camping, reservation, and all other fees still apply.

State Department issues ‘do not travel' advisory for Iraq
(NewsNation) — The State Department issued a 'do not travel' warning for Iraq on Thursday, telling Americans not to travel to the country due to threats of violence. The U.S. pulled some troops and nonessential embassy personnel out of Iraq on Wednesday, citing tension in the region. Suggestions for those who decide to go to the country anyway include having a personal security plan, establishing a last will and testament and providing DNA samples to a medical provider in case it is needed for identification. Red Wing Park set to reopen on Saturday
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Just in time for the summer season, Red Wing Park is set to reopen on Saturday. The park has been closed on and off since Oct. 3, 2024 in order to allow for necessary roadway improvements, which included widening the entry way to the park and repaving the parking lots and park lanes throughout the park. Red Wing Park in Virginia Beach to close for renovations The park briefly reopened in April for the 2025 Cherry Blossom Festival, but is set to officially reopen to the public on Saturday, June 14.
