ONE of the UK's major train stations once had direct trains to Paris - only for them to be scrapped.
London Waterloo first opened in 1848, making it one of the oldest in the city as well.

However, it was in the 1990s that it launched the first trains to Europe from the UK.
Platforms 20 and 21 were demolished to make way for a new Eurostar terminus, which opened in 1994.
This connected passengers from London Waterloo to Paris as well as Lille and Brussels.
Sadly, this was scrapped in 2007 following the introduction of the new high speed from London St Pancras.

This has since seen the launch of more destinations such as Amsterdam and Rotterdam, although they are yet to return to Ashford International.
Despite this, London Waterloo is undergoing a major renovation.
Network Rail and the local Lambeth council has revealed the plans for the 177-year-old station, which will take a decade to complete.
The improvements mean new entrances and improved access although the current 24 train platforms will remain.

The 100-year-old roof is also being repaired along with more places to eat and shop being added.
The latest update includes the toilets which were recently upgraded.

Network Rail boss Lord Hendy told the Standard: 'As these things go, [the masterplan] is one of the best things I have ever seen.
And this year, you can visit hidden parts of London Waterloo as part of Railway-200, a year-long celebration

Currently, the station is the third busiest in the UK with around 57million passengers a year.
However it is the biggest station in the UK when it comes to floor space, as well as having the most platforms.

It is also home to the London Underground, after the Waterloo & City line in 1898.

This was followed by the Bakerloo line on 1906 followed by the Northern line on 1926, with the newest being the Jubilee line on 1999.
Film fans will notice the train station from The Bourne Ultimatum or Sliding Doors, as well as The War of the Worlds.
And for Wetherspoons fans, the pub recently opened inside the station.

Travel pros have found that the festive flight market follows predictable patterns that most passengers are unaware of. Prices for a Christmas getaway immediately start to climb from September onwards, and can reach eye-watering peaks by November. This is because most people start panic-booking and leave it to the last minute to organise a trip. So if you want to save money and find a cheap deal, experts have said the best time to book up for a festive trip is JUNE. Fred Harrington, a personal finance expert at SaveMyCent, revealed that this month is the "perfect window" to sort a winter holiday if you want to save some serious cash. 'There's something fascinating about vacation booking psychology that works against most travellers. "People are booking their August beach vacations right now, but completely ignoring December flights that are literally at their cheapest point of the year. Cheapest family holiday destinations for summer 2025 revealed "I've seen families stress about Christmas flight costs every single year, then kick themselves when they realise they could have saved hundreds by thinking ahead. "The airlines count on this predictable behaviour - they know most people will panic-book in autumn and pay whatever prices they set. 'What's brilliant about the June booking window is that it requires zero sacrifice. "You're not gambling on last-minute deals or settling for inconvenient times. "You're simply working with airline pricing cycles instead of against them. "Right now, we're in that perfect window where Christmas feels far enough away that most people aren't thinking about it, but close enough that airlines have released their full December inventory. 'By July, summer vacation demand will peak, and airlines start adjusting their algorithms for autumn booking patterns. 'That's when Christmas fares begin their steady climb upward." Fred also told how timing is everything when it comes to getting a good deal - and the days of the week you book up can actually have a massive impact on the price. To keep costs down, he advises booking on a Tuesday or Wednesday, and try to fly out on these same days, plus Saturdays. He explained: 'Airlines release their cheapest fare batches midweek. 'Weekend bookings often trigger higher pricing tiers because the algorithms assume you're leisure travellers with flexible budgets. Why do Christmas flight prices go crazy? DECEMBER flights don't just get expensive - they get absolutely bonkers. Fred explains that the madness typically starts in September when early bookers begin their search. By October, demand ramps up properly. Come November, you're looking at premium prices across the board as last-minute bookers scramble for remaining seats. He says: "Airlines know families will pay whatever it takes to get home for the holidays, so prices can jump substantially compared to off-peak times". Airlines use sophisticated pricing algorithms that constantly adjust fares based on search patterns, booking trends, and competitor pricing. And what many people don't realise is that these systems are designed to capitalise on predictable booking behaviours. Fred explains: 'The algorithms are incredibly smart, but they also follow patterns. 'June represents a dead zone for Christmas flight searches. Airlines haven't ramped up their festive pricing yet because demand signals are still quiet.' "Flying midweek also avoids the premium pricing that kicks in for Friday and Sunday departures when business travellers and weekend warriors push up demand." However, it's not just about timing - searching is also key for nabbing a cheap winter holiday. Fred says his "Flight Search Stacking' method is his "secret weapon" and has urged everyone to try it before they book up. The stacking method involves comparing not just prices, but date flexibility and layover options across platforms - and it can save you hundreds of pounds. Which means you can often uncover 'ghost fares' - which are lower-tier deals that only appear on certain sites or through alternative routing options. Fred said: "The Flight Search Stacking technique takes maybe an extra 10 minutes but can easily save you hundreds. "Run parallel searches across multiple platforms - Google Flights, Skyscanner, airline websites - but always in incognito or private browsing mode. 'Airlines track your searches and can actually bump up prices if they think you're desperate for a particular route.'

Barry Rail Depot Restored in Transport Upgrade
Passenger train drivers are once again based in Barry for the first time since the 1990s after work was completed on the depot there. The move sees the number of people working at the depot rise to 58. Transport for Wales took over the rail depot there in 2022 and have been proceeding to develop it alongside partners in Network Rail. From the May timetable change on 18 May, 39 drivers will now be based there alongside depot colleagues, cleaners and train crew managers. Most of the Class 756 and Class 231 fleets will be stabled there to serve the lines between Rhymney and Barry Island, as well as the Treherbert, Merthyr and Aberdare lines (until the Class 398 fleet enter service). Heavy maintenance and fuelling will continue to take place at Canton Depot in Cardiff. Depot Manager Alun Davies said: 'This is transformational for people and the area and is testament to the hard work of so many to make it happen. 'It's incredible to have the drivers coming back here. 'When we took the depot on it required a major clean up operation. We took a really joined up approach to it, putting safety and sustainability at the forefront, as well as looking ahead and planning for the future.' As part of the work a safe walking route has been installed between Barry town railway station and the depot. A sustainable well-being garden has also been created for staff and visitors, which also helps to support biodiversity around the depot. Barry depot had been built in the 1890s as part of the developments of the docks and railway. However it closed as a driver depot in the 1980s as British Rail looked to reorganise ahead of privatisation in the early 1990s. EWS had drivers based there until 1999. Prior to TFW takeover, John Buxton, Director of Cambrian Transport, operated out of the site since 2009. The depot, garden and crossing were officially opened to drivers at a special event where MS Jane Hutt, Vale of Glamorgan Council Leader Lis Burnett and several other key local stakeholders were given a tour of the depot.
