Soccer-Koeman keeps Depay hungry for goals after equalling Van Persie's record

GRONINGEN, Netherlands (Reuters) -Memphis Depay was denied the chance to complete a hat-trick on Tuesday, and take sole possession of the Dutch national team's all-time scoring record in the process, as coach Ronald Koeman said he wanted to keep him hungry for goals.
Depay scored twice inside the opening 16 minutes of the Netherlands' 8-0 win over Malta in a World Cup qualifier to equal Robin van Persie's record of 50.
Both players have 50 goals in 102 international appearances.
"I equalled Van Persie, I am happy with that," said Depay, who was taken off in the 72nd minute with the Dutch 4-0 up.
"But this is just an interim total. Of course I am also going for 51, 52 and also 53. If I had played longer, I might have scored one more tonight," he told reporters.
"I didn't say anything about the fact that the coach took me off early. I was already happy that I could do what I've been doing for years ... scoring."
Depay scored his first international goal against Australia at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil but it has not always been smooth sailing over the years with the national team.
"We have had some turbulence over the years," he said.
"There have been many coaches and many players have come and gone. The times have shaped me and made me realise what I want.
"Ultimately, it's important that we're at the World Cup and that we go far."
Koeman has consistently backed Depay over his two spells in charge of the Dutch, even when he struggled with his club form.
"I've always thought Memphis is a great player. I think he deserves a great compliment. He's had a year full of injuries, but he's fit and hungry now,' said Koeman.
"It's great that he didn't score the third, because then he stays hungry,' he quipped on Dutch television.

Makhaza, 23, who found out about his selection for the start of the international season on social media, plays for the University of Cape Town in South Africa's Varsity Cup competition and is a reliable goal-kicker and speedy on the wing. He is studying for a degree in psychology and social development and has never been tested against professional players. "It's been a pleasure to work with him," Erasmus told reporters on Thursday. "He's consistently been the top Varsity Cup player, and especially in terms of point scoring, probably one of the best in the competition's history. "You sometimes wonder, is this one of those players who slipped through the cracks? It's been good to see what he brings." Erasmus suggests the June 28 meeting with the Barbarians in Cape Town, and July's two tests against Italy and one versus Georgia, might come too soon, but believes Makhaza could wear the jersey in the future. Rugby-Bulls and Leinster battle for United Rugby Championship crown
(Reuters) -South Africa's Bulls play a third United Rugby Championship final in four seasons but the scars of past failure will haunt them when they meet Irish powerhouse Leinster in this year's decider at Croke Park in Dublin on Saturday. The Bulls lost to compatriots the Stormers three seasons ago, and were stunned by Glasgow Warriors in the decider in Pretoria last season, a game they were heavily tipped to win. They return to the final again, this time as underdogs against a Leinster team stocked full with Irish internationals, and two of the world's best players in South African lock RG Snyman and New Zealand centre Jordie Barrett. Bulls coach Jake White took the Springboks to the Rugby World Cup title in 2007, but has found trophy success with the Pretoria-based side hard to come by, with several near misses. "We are aware that we've played three finals, but we're also aware that we've surpassed expectations, and hopefully, in this game, we get to show what we learnt from the other finals," White told reporters as he named his side on Thursday. "We are going to have to put the opposition under pressure. Leinster is a quality, well-coached team that is revered by many in this competition. My message to my players for the last four months was to try and match Leinster's consistency, and we have, and now we're in the final." White has made one enforced change to his match-day 23 from the semi-final win over the Sharks, with Marco van Staden into the side for the injured Cameron Hanekom.
