Baghdad: Ramadan nights light up with Suhoor stalls

Shafaq News03-03-2025

Shafaq News/ As the holy month of Ramadan started, "Suhoor stalls" began to appear on the streets of Baghdad, especially in the Karada district.
Vendors are offering a variety of traditional dishes that Baghdad residents enjoy for their pre-dawn meal in preparation for the day's fast.
Mohammed, a stall owner in Karada, told Shafaq News, "Today is the first day I begin working during Ramadan, and my stall features a variety of foods, such as jalfrezi, liver, potatoes, and kibbeh."
He added that the demand in the early days of Ramadan is usually limited, but traffic picks up after the first week as people become accustomed to staying out late until 'Suhoor' time, which revitalizes the markets and increases demand for the stalls.
On Saturday evening, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior issued new instructions regarding Ramadan procedures, announced by ministry spokesman Brigadier General Muqdad Miri.
According to a statement, "All restaurants, cafes, malls, and shopping areas will remain open, as will all other facilities, with Ramadan activities continuing in Baghdad and the provinces from Iftar until suhoor."
Miri also emphasized that full restrictions will be enforced during fasting hours while ensuring safe and smooth traffic for all citizens.

Electricity boost: Iraq signs 600 MW pact with Turkiye

Shafaq News/ On Wednesday, Iraq's Ministry of Electricity signed a contract with Turkish company Alifrin to double the capacity of the Iraq-Turkiye power transmission line. The ministry announced in a statement that the agreement will initially supply 300 megawatts to Iraq's national grid through the Jazira-Kasak 400kV line in Nineveh province, with the full 600-megawatt capacity, expected to be operational within a month. 'Technical teams have already completed infrastructure to implement the interconnection, and all contractual obligations have been met.' The contract operates under a Take and Pay model, as Iraq will only pay for the electricity it consumes, 'offering economic flexibility and minimizing financial waste,' the ministry added.

Iran dismantles ISIS-linked operatives in Tehran

Shafaq News/ On Wednesday, Iran arrested members of an ISIS-affiliated network in the capital, Tehran, according to the General Command of the Internal Security Forces Saeed Montazer-ol-Mahdi. Ol-Mahdi noted that the arrests were made following 'extensive and complex operations' in recent days by the counterterrorism unit across Tehran and the provinces of Isfahan, Qom, and Alborz, adding that the network was preparing to carry out sabotage and bombing attacks during recent public ceremonies. 'All members of the terrorist network were arrested during the operation, including 13 individuals—among them the ringleader, support teams, and suicide bombers. Explosive devices, including suicide vests, were also seized.' The command added that further details about the dismantled network would be disclosed in the coming days. Iran has also reported multiple foiled plots involving sabotage and suicide bombings. In January 2024, ISIS-K, the Afghan affiliate of the Islamic State, claimed responsibility for two bombings in Kerman that killed at least 95 people during a memorial for Qassem Soleimani. The attack was one of the deadliest in Iran in recent years. Earlier, in June 2017, a coordinated assault on the Iranian parliament and the Khomeini mausoleum left 17 people dead and marked the first major ISIS-claimed operation inside the country.
