Insane 920HP Porsche-Based Hypercar Breaks Cover At Supercar Fest 2025

Forbes4 days ago

It's not every day a new hypercar appears, so when RML Group arrived at Supercar Fest with its P39 prototype, the crowd was in for a treat. You might have already spotted the P39's silhouette looks rather familiar. Created as a commemorative piece to celebrate RML Group's 40th anniversary, the hypercar is based on a Porsche 992.1 Turbo S platform. The idea is to combine the 992's daily driver characteristics with a brutal track beast alter ego.
Michael Mallock, Board Member responsible for RML's Bespoke Division, said: 'From the outset we set ourselves the challenge of building a car which could switch personalities at the touch of a button – serene on the road, savage on the circuit. The numbers speak for themselves, but what excites me most is how intuitive and confidence‑inspiring the P39 feels, whatever the setting.'
In collaboration with Litchfield Motors the twin-turbo flat-six has been re-engineered with a larger diameter intake and exhaust plumbing. Thermal routing has also been optimized to enable an uprated 920 hp and 705 lb-ft of torque in Sport/Sport+ mode. To try and help drivers not to immediately crash into a wall when they get behind the wheel, RML Group has added two other driving modes. Wet mode drops maximum power to 600 hp while normal mode limits it to 750 hp for road driving conditions.
Paul Dickinson, Chief Executive Officer of RML Group, added: 'P39 is a rolling demonstration of what RML's engineering division can achieve. By integrating active aerodynamics, a re‑imagined chassis and a 920 hp powertrain, we have created a hypercar that delivers relentless track performance yet remains perfectly at home on the King's Road. It is the purest expression of 40 years of engineering excellence, distilled into a car that wears our badge with pride.'
Although the P39 still bears resemblance to the 992, the bodywork has been redone in carbon fiber to cut weight. Of course, the main feature is the huge rear wing that detracts from the Porsche relation at the rear end. It features electronically movable parts to optimize downforce depending on the scenario. In track mode it moves to increase downforce by an impressive 24%. For maximum performance on straights, the driver can select the drag reduction system to flatten the wing and cut drag by 23%.
Aero kit can be found all over, including at the very front in the form of an extending splitter which slides 75mm forward in track mode. This extra distance repositions nose pressure and keeps the front end sharper into turns. Additional aero features include air curtains around the front wheels, fender cut outs, underbody diffuser and vented rear arches. All of this combines to boost the stock Turbo S's downforce of 1,432N up to 5,100N in road mode and over 6,500N in track mode at 150mph.
To cope with the extra power and unimaginable forces acting on the vehicle, some chassis tweaks were needed to get the best out of it. The track was widened with new suspension links, customised top mounts keep the right camber angles and secondary springs help to find the balance between track and road performance. The P39 also features bespoke R53 supplied dampers turned by RML Group and a hydraulic lift system to offer two rear and three front ride height options.
RML Group plans to show off the P39 hypercar prototype at the Supercar Driver Secret Meet at Silverstone, June 17. Summer appearances will be rounded off at the Silverstone Festival August 22 to 24. As the name suggests, this beauty is limited to a run of just 39 examples.

The Ford Focus ST Reaches the End of the Line

Ford announced earlier this year that it was ending Focus production in Europe this November. That includes the coveted Focus ST, one of the last hot hatchbacks sold with a manual transmission, but your opportunity to order one is dwindling. Ford has filled the order books for ST production in the United Kingdom. Ford UK told Autocar , "There are no new factory orders available for the Focus ST at the moment." That comment suggests the automaker could reopen the order books before production officially wraps six months from now, but there's no way to prevent the inevitable. The Focus and the Focus ST are dead by the end of the year, and the company has no direct successor ready to take its place. The inability to order a new Focus ST in the UK won't prevent you from buying one. The automaker also told the publication that there were around 170 STs unsold in the dealer network. Motor1 reached out to Ford to see if the Focus ST is still available to order elsewhere in Europe. We'll update this story if we hear back. Ford has been killing off its sedans and hatches for the last few years. Mondeo production, which was the Fusion in the US, ended in 2022, two years after Ford pulled the model from American showrooms. The Fiesta died in 2023, and now it's the Focus's time to exit the brand's portfolio, including the fun and enjoyable Focus ST. Bad News: BMW Won't Build a New Supercar Anytime Soon

BMW was very close to having a new version of the iconic M1. However, the automaker pulled the plug on that project at the last minute, and it's unlikely BMW will build a new supercar anytime soon. BMW M Boss Frank van Meel told BMW Blog that the company doesn't "want to lose focus" on its high-performance models right now, even if "we are always dreaming about" a new M1-like supercar. However, the company has to "find the right window of opportunity where we have the capacity to work on a car like that." BMW is preparing the launch of its Neue Klasse architecture that will support both electric and gas-powered versions of the highly anticipated M3. It's not expected to go on sale until late 2026 or early 2027, and it's likely consuming a vast amount of engineering resources leading up to the launch. The new combustion-powered M3 will have a gas engine that's unique from the S58 twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that powers the current model. The new M1 that BMW was supposedly working on would have been a 600-horsepower plug-in hybrid with a four-cylinder engine. BMW worked on the project throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, but the powers-that-be decided to greenlight the XM instead. It's likely not a question of if, but when BMW decides to build a new supercar—it just has to happen at the right time. One reason the company greenlit the XM over a new M1 was that it believed today's customers wanted SUVs instead of sports cars . However, the XM isn't selling well , and a new BMW supercar is now sitting on the back burner. Stellantis CEO Filosa To-Do List Topped By Profitability Restoration

New Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa's check list includes restoring profitability, negotiating his way around the U.S. tariff upheaval, facing down the electric vehicle revolution, and then figuring out what to do with all those brands. Stellantis's operating profit margin in 2024 was 5.5%, down sharply from 2023's 12.8%. Stellantis had said before the Trump tariffs problems that it expects little improvement in 2025. Last year, industrial cash flow was a negative €6 billion ($6.8 billion) compared with 2023's positive €12.9 billion ($14.6 billion). The merger between Fiat Chrysler and France's Groupe PSA in 2021 was named Stellantis and included 14 brands. Since then a joint venture with LeapMotor of China has been added. Former CEO Carlos Tavares orchestrated the merger, but shocked shareholders by quitting in December, about a year before the end of his contract. Tavares had been lauded as a financial genius as he welded together many brands which quickly became hugely profitable, despite being mainly mass-market ventures. Overlapping technologies were dropped and economies of scale exploited. One of the brands, Opel and its British Vauxhall affiliate, had been a chronic loss maker when owned by General Motors. Many of the other European brands including Citroen, Peugeot, Fiat and Lancia competed against other in the mass market. DS, Alfa Romeo and Abarth sit in the wannabe premium sector. Dodge, Ram, Jeep and Chrysler were in the U.S. Storied Italian sportscar maker Maserati sits atop of the list. Tavares had said that because of the apparent overlapping of many of the brands, they would be given 10 years to justify their existence. That expires in 2031, but pressure is likely to amount quickly for them to prove their worth. Profitability of the various brands was propelled to unprecedented highs by post-covid pandemic supply-constraints. But Tavares's credibility was undermined by the collapse of profitability in North America. U.S. brands were particularly hard hit when these unusual conditions expired. Automotive News columnist Jamie Butters said Tavares become 'profoundly' unpopular in his last year. 'Pressure on suppliers to bear the costs of electrification led to court battles and missed shipments. Missteps in the U.S. market prompted dealers to call for his resignation. The inability to justify investing in the Belvidere, Ill., plant outraged the UAW, which had counted that plant's revival as a major win from Shawn Fain's historic 2023 contract negotiations. Salaried employees weren't happy either, fielding multiple rounds of buyout offers. So pretty much every stakeholder group was against him,' Butters said. Jeep Cherokee SUV getty 'After that Filosa (a 25-year company veteran) looks pretty good,' Butters said. There had been speculation that Stellantis would recruit from another company or even another industry. After all the late, great Sergio Marchionne was recruited from outside the automotive industry. Italian luxury sports car maker Ferrari, spun off from Stellantis component Fiat-Chrysler in 2016, reached outside to appoint Benedetto Vigna. 'The decision by John Elkann (provisional Stellantis CEO after Tavares left) and the Ferrari board in 2021 to appoint Benedetto Vigna, who had been running STMicro's sensors division, as Ferrari CEO has turned out to be inspired, and Vigna has since driven (Ferrari) to ever greater heights,' Bernstein Research said in a report. 'Antonio Filosa also brings a deep understanding of the U.S. market, something which the group's dealer body persistently accused Carlos Tavares of ignoring its legitimate concerns,' Bernstein Research said. In Europe the obvious weakling brands are Lancia, Alfa Romeo, and DS. Analysts say at least 10 brands are in dire need of fresh products. Two of them count on only one model. The positioning is not clear either: Opel is very similar to Peugeot. Fiat is very similar to Citroen. Lancia wants to enter the premium segment, where DS and Alfa Romeo are already struggling. Maserati hasn't been able to find its identity and is stuck somewhere between the premium and luxury segments. Filosa will have to fix the profit problem and decide what to do with all those brands. Selling some off might well meet willing buyers from China eager to raise their profile in Europe and avoid recently erected high EU tariffs for EVs. Stellantis, after reporting first quarter sales fell 14% to €35.8 billion ($40.6 billion) compared with the same period last year, said it would not make any predictions about its profits for the year. Stellantis reports profits every six months, not quarterly. Filosa faces big decisions over the next six to 12 months requiring significant strategic adjustments. Cost-cutting measures, better alignment of production with demand, and improved software and electrification strategies will be crucial, analysts say. HSBC Global Research, in a report on Filosa's appointment. offered these bullet points – On paper his CV looks a good fit for the role, given he is: - An auto guy, having worked exclusively in the industry for over 25 years - A Italian native from Naples, so understands Europe - Has spent a good deal of time in South America (Stellantis 3rd largest profit source) - Lives in Detroit, which is arguably where the heavy lifting needs to be done.
