Work to begin on improving Plymouth city centre bus services
Work to improve bus services in Plymouth will begin next month, the council has said.Plymouth City Council (PCC) said the Royal Parade bus improvement scheme aimed to reduce congestion and improve reliability by increasing its number of bus stops on the shop side of the city centre.The local authority said the scheme would reduce delays, cut queues and help make going by bus "more attractive" than opting for a private car.Councillor John Stephens said it was part of the council's ambition to encourage people to make greener travel choices.
He said: "Plymouth needs to improve bus services to make it easier for everyone to get to work, school, shops and businesses, friends or family. "Nearly 25% of households in Plymouth do not have a car and with the city's population expected to grow, improving sustainable travel choices is vital to keeping the city moving."
The scheme will take about nine months to be carried out, and will begin on 7 July.All bus stops on the shop side of Royal Parade between Courtenay Street and St Andrews Cross roundabout will be closed and temporary stops will be made available in alternative locations across the city centre.The eastbound side of Royal Parade will also be reduced to one lane for all vehicles."We realise there is going to be some upheaval for a time for passengers, but please bear with us as the long-term gain will be better bus journeys," Mr Stephens added.The scheme is set to cost about £7.4m overall, funded by the Department for Transport's Transforming Cities Fund and Bus Grant, Historic England's Heritage Action Zone funding and the Council's Better Places funding.

Mr Lammy said: 'Further flights will follow in the coming days, security allowing. We will prioritise those with greatest need, and contact those allocated a seat directly.' Foreign Secretary David Lammy told the Commons a British national had been injured by Iranian rockets fired on Israel over the last week. Earlier, Mr Lammy had urged Iran to take a diplomatic 'off-ramp' and engage in talks, as he cautioned Tehran against blockading the Strait of Hormuz or attacking US bases in the Middle East in revenge for Saturday night's missile attack. Questions are being asked about whether the shipping channel or oil exports through it could be blocked amid the tensions.

Briton injured in Iran missile attacks as first evacuation flight from Israel takes off
A British national has been injured in Israel during missile attacks by Iran, the foreign secretary has said, telling the Commons that 63 others have been evacuated from Israel to Cyprus by the RAF. It comes after the US attacked three nuclear sites in Iran overnight and Tehran then launched a ballistic missile barrage against Israel. In a statement to the Commons, the foreign secretary said: 'This is a perilous moment in the Middle East, waves of strikes between Israel and Iran have now lasted for 10 days, continuing overnight. 'I know the whole House will have in their thoughts the many civilians impacted by the fighting. I can confirm today, this includes one British national, injured in Israel. We've reached out to offer consular support.' It is understood that around 4,000 British nationals have registered their presence in Israel with the Foreign Office, while around 1,000 have requested a seat on a flight. Further evacuation flights will be provided by the foreign office, Mr Lammy confirmed on Monday. 'Today's flight will bring British nationals and their dependents safely back to the UK. While the situation in the Middle East remains volatile, we are working around the clock to secure more flights and bring more people home', the foreign secretary said. The FCDO last week said those with 'greatest need' would be prioritised for flights, and British nationals plus their non-British immediate family members travelling with them are eligible. Ministers have warned British nationals not to make their way to the airport unless they are contacted, adding that the situation 'remains volatile'. The government's ability to run flights out of Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories 'could change at short notice', the FCDO warned.

Cristina Balekjian, director of UK hospitality analytics at CoStar Group, said the properties had been put on the market despite strong local demand."When we look at the sort of performance data for hotels in the Gloucester hotel market, hotels in that market are performing well still," she said."They're still achieving revenue growth. "So that's a positive trend, especially since overall in the UK, the hotel market has been relatively slow this year compared to last year, given the economic uncertainty that we've been going through."
