Puppet Master pulls enough strings to shade stablemate Stay True
It continued Aidan O'Brien's domination of the trials in recent days, with the Ballydoyle handler also winning the Chester Vase and the Dee Stakes with Lambourn and Mount Kilimanjaro respectively, as well as the Cheshire Oaks and Lingfield Oaks Trial with Minnie Hauk and Giselle.
Ryan Moore pulled a mild surprise at declarations when his name appeared against Puppet Master rather than Stay True, as the latter had won his only start, while Puppet Master had only won one of four races.
O'Brien stated it was down to the experience factor and that ultimately proved crucial as the two began to pull clear.
Stay True did not look thoroughly straightforward on the way round but in the closing stages it was Puppet Master (4-5 favourite) who veered of a straight line.
Briefly, Stay True looked like he might get on top but Moore's mount was in fact always doing enough and got the verdict by a short head.
Puppet Master was cut to 25-1 from 50s for the Derby by Betfair and Paddy Power, while Coral went 25-1 from 66s.
Moore said: 'We fancied him in the Royal Lodge last year but he didn't quite run his race that day.
'He had a nice run at Leopardstown and that experience and that run stood him in good stead for today, they are two good horses. It was only the experience that made me ride him, they are two nice ones.
'We've still got trials in Leopardstown and York and there's France too, so we'll see where they all stand.'
Coolmore's Paul Smith said: 'It's been a great week and these are two lovely horses who hit the line hard.
'Ryan said Puppet Master relaxed well and is quite an uncomplicated horse. I think the deciding factor of Ryan riding him was that he had the greater experience.
'Richard (Kingscote) was very encouraged by Stay True. He said he's still a bit of a baby on just a second run and will get the trip nicely.
'It was interesting that the further they went, the further they went clear of the third horse.
'We will see what happens, as we have runners in France and at York and there's always the Irish Derby and Ascot as well as Epsom.
'The Delacroix form looks strong and we like him and the two that finished behind him. The Lion In Winter did a piece of work the other day and heads to the Dante.'

Derby 2025: Aidan O'Brien claims ELEVENTH Oaks victory with Classic one-two
The Ballydoyle trainer now has an extraordinary 31 wins in Epsom's Group 1 races, having won the Derby and Coronation Cup ten times each Ryan Moore picked the right Aidan O'Brien filly to land a one-two for the stable in the Betfred Oaks at Epsom. The Ballydoyle trainer has an amazing record in Epsom's three Group 1 contests. He has won ten editions of the Derby and on Friday claimed a tenth win in the Coronation Cup with Jan Brueghel. He had also won the Oaks ten times, in which he trained three of the nine runners, giving stable jockey Ryan Moore a potential big race headache. Moore, who rarely gets it wrong, went for Minnie Hauk, the winner of the Cheshire Oaks, rather than Whirl or Giselle. It was touch and go whether he had chosen correctly as Whirl, under Wayne Lordan, made her challenge with the advantage of the rail to race against in the straight. But Minnie Hauk matched her all the way and narrowly edged the ensuing duel to win by a neck with favourite Desert Flower, winner of the 1,000 Guineas, struggling to handle the track as she finished four lengths back in third. Moore said: 'She is still learning a little bit. She didn't have much racing at two. Aidan had a lot of faith in her. She has come on a lot since Chester. 'She travelled round strong. The filly in front didn't quit at all. She picked up quite easy and then was a little bit green in front. She was wanting to run down the camber but when the other filly came back, she went on again. 'She's a talented filly and she obviously stays very well. Hopefully she will build on this.' O'Brien has another three horses in Saturday's Betfred Derby in which Moore has sided with Delacroix. The trainer said: 'She is a very classy filly. She was just ready to run in Chester and then made abnormal improvement from Chester. It was all class rather than stamina and fitness. 'Ryan loved her the last day and loved her again today. She's very exciting.' He went on: 'Whirl ran a great race too. She was fighting back again at the line.' O'Brien said the 11th Oaks victory was 'a credit to everybody', particularly the members of the Coolmore partnership. He said: 'All I do is observe every day. Before they go to Coolmore they are reared and broken, brought over and everyone takes charge of them. It's such a big team. So many people are involved on the way up.'

Bin Suroor said: 'She ran a really good race in the Guineas and she came out of that well. To finish fourth in the Guineas on just her second run after winning her maiden was very good. 'This is her first run over a mile and half, but she should stay because she is nice and relaxed. 'I think Epsom will suit her, she's a nice size and if she settles in the first half of the race I think she'll stay. The further she goes the better I think. She's a very nice filly and I think she'll run well.' Aidan O'Brien has won the showpiece event 10 times and saddles a host of trial winners in search of number 11. We knew it wouldn't be too demanding on her and she would have learned plenty. 'She's a lovely filly with a good nature, a good traveller and has a good stride to her. She shows plenty of pace in her work in her half-speeds.' The master of Ballydoyle will also be represented by Giselle and Whirl, who tuned up for duty with wins at Lingfield and in York's Musidora Stakes respectively. O'Brien continued: 'Giselle got very keen through the winter and spring and wanted to do too much so we didn't get to do an awful lot with her – it was all about relaxing her. 'If we were going to the Oaks she had to run and Lingfield was about the only place she could. She was probably very underdone fitness-wise in Lingfield, we were just hoping to get her started and go from there, so we were delighted with the way she won and she's come forward a lot since then we think. 'Whirl is a very straightforward filly and Ryan was very happy to make the running on her in York. A filly came up either side of her, but that was no problem to her, she's got a lovely mind and she got the mile and a quarter very well and looked like a filly that could get further.' Ralph Beckett has fond memories of the Oaks and having linked up with owner-breeder Julian Richmond-Watson when opening his Classic account with Look Here in 2008, the pair join forces again with Nottingham winner Revoir, who will attempt to reverse recent Newbury form with Ed Walker's Qilin Queen. Joseph O'Brien's Wemightakedlongway and John and Thady Gosden's Go Go Boots – representing American celebrity chef Bobby Flay – complete the field of nine.
