SA's Olympic medal 4x100m team 'needs to step it up' at World Relays

The Herald07-05-2025

The men's 4x100m and 4x400m teams as well as the women's 4x400m and the mixed 4x400m teams will be trying to win qualification for the world championships in Tokyo in September.
It's all or nothing for the women's and mixed outfits, but the two men's teams will have breathing room if they fail. The top 14 teams will secure berths in Japan, with the next two fastest making up the 16 teams that will do battle at the world championships.
The men's 4x100m team are the third-fastest team in the qualifying window so far, and should the two quickest, the US and Canada, be part of the 14, South Africa will be the fastest side in contention for two places.
The men's 4x400m team is fifth-fastest, behind the US, Botswana, Britain and Belgium. They would need at least three of those teams to finish in the top 14 in China to have a chance of making it to Japan.
Zenéy Geldenhuys, captain of the women's relay teams, is confident the women can make the final and challenge for silverware after they broke the national 4x400m record at Pilditch stadium in Pretoria last month, clocking 3 min 28.30 sec.
'I think when we are in a very competitive environment we will automatically go faster. [The record performance] was our first race for the year and we broke the South African record. We didn't even think we were going to do that.

Replacement fly-half Ciaran Frawley and prop Tom Clarkson also crossed for tries. The only negative for coach Leo Cullen will have been the form off the tee of number 10 Sam Prendergast, who missed several simple kicks at goal. It did not matter this week but could be a deciding factor in the final.

Team Rage kickboxer kicks her way to the top

Team Rage kickboxer kicks her way to the top Charla Pieterse (31), a member of the Team Rage Kickboxing Club, performed exceptionally well at the Kickboxing Organisation of South Africa (KOSA) championships. She secured second place in the Kick Lite category against some of the top kickboxers in the country. Charla, a blue belt, fought a black belt opponent and said, 'It was a difficult fight, but I managed to stick to the basics as the coach would always tell us.' Charla's journey in kickboxing began in 2020, and she credits her coach, Darin Opperman, for believing in her. 'I'm very proud of myself and the work I've put in. I'm also grateful for him because he believed in me, and I knew I could compete,' she said. Her achievement has earned her a spot on the B team for KOSA, representing South Africa at the 2025 World Championships and the 2026 African Championships. For Charla, kickboxing is more than just a sport; it's a valuable skill for self-defence. 'Kickboxing is not just a sport but a technique I use for self-defence. As a woman and a mother, I know that at any time I would be able to defend myself and my family,' she said. 'I also believe that if more women invested in the sport, we would curb the violence facing our country lately.' Darin praised Charla, stating that she performed exceptionally well against a more experienced fighter. 'This was Charla's second tournament, and I'm very proud of her for the work she put in.' Bafana coach Hugo Broos happy with performances of newcomers in draw with Tanzania

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos was satisfied with the performances of some of the new players during the 0-0 international friendly draw with Tanzania at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday. Broos handed out a number of debuts in his new-look Bafana side and he was happy with the way they accounted for themselves despite playing together for the first time for the national team. In what turned out to be a dull match played under cold conditions in Polokwane, Broos gave starting opportunities to Ricardo Goss, Deano van Rooyen, Thabo Moloisane, Kulumane Ndamane, Fawaaz Basadien, Simphiwe Selepe, Tshepang Moremi and Ashley Cupido. Some of the these players ordinarily would not have been considered but they benefited from the absence of their Mamelodi Sundowns counterparts who leave at the weekend for the Fifa Club World Cup in the US. 'After every game we give jerseys to players who were earning their first cap and we gave about eight after this match,' he said as he reflected on the share of the spoils with the Taifa Stars.
