Rangers and their shameless manager hunt is like getting Frank when you wanted Liam Gallagher
Monday night's bombshell saw reports that Davide Ancelotti is in the running to become the next manager of Rangers.
And the verdict on potential? Utterly shameless!
The 35-year-old has worked as number two to his legendary father Carlo Ancelotti at Bayern Munich, Napoli, Everton and Real Madrid but if he does land the gig in Govan will become a manager in his own right for the first time.
And while the rookie could get strong financial backing of incoming Gers owners 49ers Enterprises one punter has drawn up a comparison with one ill-fated Rangers boss from recent memory. Willie Mercer, Dumfries, wrote: "If it is reported that Ancelotti Jnr is the next manager of Rangers, then I fear that we are getting another (Michael) Beale.
"Someone who is good on the training pitch but who has zero management experience. Add to this the fact that he has no knowledge or understanding of the dynamics of Scottish football, further adds to the concerns. Given Rangers lack of success over the last decade, and Celtics dominance, now is not the time for the club to be experimenting or taking risks on a rookie manager."
Robert Livingstone, Palm Beach said: If it's a done deal then that's quite an amazing choice for the 49ers to hire an assistant manager. I'd say his father (who's won every European trophy several times over ) had a say in the transactions.
"It's not the outcome fans would want, but in North America, Real Madrid with Carlo Ancelotti is one of the most famous soccer teams in the world and in the 49ers front office up to Jed York know about Real Madrid's European cup and cl pedigree.
"(It's) certainly it seems a very unusual move to make and also does come with risks as he'd know nothing about the Scottish game."
However, Gordon Ashley, Ayr, firmly believes Gers hierarchy wouldn't be naïve enough to appoint someone with no managerial experience. He added: "Fans should take this news of the new rangers manager with a pinch of salt because I believe it is a bluff.
"There is no way these guys who work for big companies are going to be daft enough to employ someone with zero managerial or even playing experience as a manager just because of his name. Even Steven Gerard had playing and some coaching experience."
The prospect of Ancelotti Jr rocking up at Ibrox has seen a few chuckles from other Hotline callers. Laurie McCall, Carntyne, said: "Ancelotti for Ibrox? Not Carlo but his son Davide! That's a bit like buying tickets for Oasis and Frank Gallagher from 'Shameless' appearing on stage instead of Liam and Noel.
Robert McEwan, Glasgow, added: "That's a brave move by Rangers going for Ancelotti Jnr. I heard he's the brains behind Real Madrid's success, who would have thought."
Neil Renton, Leith, wrote: "If I was Davide Ancelotti I'd ask my old man if he needs a hand with the Brazil national team before I'd take a job with Rangers as it would be an easier gig. One of them involves trying to get a tune out of a bunch of underperforming Prima Donna's, while the other would find you on the beaches of Rio."
Elsewhere, Derek McInnes' decision to swap the Killie dugout for Hearts at the end of the season has not gone down too well with one caller of a Rugby Park persuasion.
Jim McClean, Rothesay, said: "This manager business is a shambles both by Billy Bowie and the timing of Hearts approach.
"Their contact has been out of order, it should have waited till the season was completely finished.
"It's farcical and reminds me of the Ibrox shambles of the past year."

Rangers confirm as new manager as Russell Martin lays out 3 goals for new club
Russell Martin has signed a three-year deal to move to Ibrox after being sacked by Southampton last December, having won just one of their first 16 Premier League games after securing promotion from the Championship Rangers have confirmed the appointment of Russell Martin as the club's new head coach. The 39-year-old former MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton boss has signed a three-year contract. Martin guided Southampton to promotion to the Premier League last year but was sacked in December following one win from their first 16 games. He will be joined at Ibrox by assistant head coach Matt Gill and performance coach Rhys Owen. Rangers finished last season under the caretaker management of former captain Barry Ferguson, having dismissed Philippe Clement in February. Now ex-Scotland defender Martin, who had a short loan spell as a player at Rangers in 2018, is tasked with wrestling power back from the other side of Glasgow. The 'Gers have looked on ruefully for over a decade as Celtic have dominated Scottish football, with that stranglehold continuing last term with a 13th Premiership title in the past 14 years. 'From my time here, I had a taste of how special this club is, the expectation, the passion and the history,' he told the club's website. 'Now, as I return, I'm determined to bring success back, for the supporters, the players, and everyone inside this club. "I'm here to set standards, work hard and do my very best to earn the respect of the Rangers fans. "There's a lot to be done, but the goal is clear: win matches, win trophies and give Rangers fans a team that they can be proud of. "We want to play with bravery, to take the ball, to be aggressive, and to stand up in the big moments." Martin's arrival is the latest in a series of major changes at the club. An American consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises secured a majority shareholding on Friday, while new sporting director Kevin Thelwell officially began work on Monday. Rangers chief executive Patrick Stewart, who led the recruitment process alongside Thelwell, said: 'Our criteria for our next coach were clear: we wanted a coach who will excel in terms of how we want to play, improve our culture, develop our squad, and ultimately win matches. Russell was the standout candidate.'

What have key Rangers chiefs said about Russell Martin?
However, he did lead Saints to promotion to the Premier League, playing an exciting brand of football in the Championship. The former Scotland international, and Gers defender, has managed over 250 games at MK Dons, Swansea City and Southampton. The recruitment process was led by chief executive, Patrick Stewart, alongside the club's new sporting director, Kevin Thelwell. Read more: The decision to appoint Martin was signed off by new chairman Andrew Cavenagh and the incoming Ibrox board after the US consortium takeover deal was completed last week. All three key figures delivered their thoughts on the appointment of Martin in Rangers' announcement earlier this morning. Here is every word of what they had to say... Patrick Stewart Our criteria for our next coach were clear: we wanted a coach who will excel in terms of how we want to play, improve our culture, develop our squad, and ultimately win matches. Russell was the standout candidate. This appointment is about building a winning team and a strong culture. He is no stranger to our club, we expect success and Russell knows that. We are excited for his leadership. Kevin Thelwell Through the many conversations Patrick and I have had with Russell in recent weeks, he has emerged as the outstanding candidate. Russell comes to Rangers with hard-earned experience. His time in the Premier League has sharpened his approach, both tactically and personally. He's better for it, and we believe that will translate into the kind of leadership and performance our supporters expect. His teams play dominant football, they control the ball, dictate the tempo and impose themselves physically. They press aggressively and work relentlessly off the ball. These are all characteristics that we believe are required to be successful at home, away, and abroad. We're looking forward to getting to work with Russell immediately as we prepare for a demanding and important season ahead. Andrew Cavenagh I am delighted to welcome Russell to Rangers. This was a thorough, rigorous process and Russell impressed throughout. His appointment embodies the club's goal of attracting top talent, empowering them, and supporting them. We believe that Russell can improve on-pitch performance while also helping build the culture and infrastructure necessary for consistent and long-term success.

New Rangers boss Russell Martin ‘will have Celtic looking over their shoulders' as pundit offers massive prediction
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RANGERS' decision to appoint Russell Martin will have Celtic "looking over their shoulders". That's the opinion of TalkSPORT pundit Adrian Durham after the Gers took the plunge and made the 39-year-old former Southampton manager the choice to replace Philippe Clement as the next permanent Gers boss. Speaking to Celtic-daft breakfast host Alan Brazil, Martin said: "Listen, he did play for Rangers and by his own admission, he isn't exactly a Rangers legend. "He wasn't brilliant there and only had a few games [17 appearances, scoring one goal]. "It isn't his playing career at Rangers that has got him the job, but he has an identity, he has a plan. "I remember it really worked for Southampton in the Championship, I remember they went 25 games unbeaten. "If you're talking about levels, maybe Rangers have looked at it and thought he was that good in the championship, he could replicate that in the Scottish leagues and challenge Celtic. "I personaly think he is going to need some money and I'm not sure that is there at Rangers. "If he can get players in that suit the style he wants to bring in at Rangers he could have a big impact and Celtic possibly need to look over their shoulders. "He has all the credentials to be a success at Rangers if he gets those players." At that point co-host Gabby Agbonlahor said: "Are you saying they are going to win the league next season?" 4 Durham replied: "Yeah they're going to win the lot!"
