Odisha to plant 7.5 crore trees this year: CM Mohan Majhi
BHUBANESWAR: CM Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday announced an ambitious plan to plant 7.5 crore trees across Odisha this year. This announcement was made during the state-level World Environment Day celebration held at Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology. Speaking at the event, Majhi highlighted the state's significant progress in environmental conservation. He noted that Odisha recorded an increase of 560 square km in forest cover in two years from 2021 to 2023, placing it fourth among all Indian states. "Plastic pollution has become a triple threat, impacting climate change, biodiversity, and waste management," said Majhi. He emphasised the govt's commitment to eliminating single-use plastics and promoting sustainable alternatives. The state govt has launched several key initiatives, including the State Clean Air Programme aimed at reducing urban air pollution. The 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign has already successfully planted over 6.5 million trees, while citizens and organisations have set a record by planting more than 20 million saplings. In a significant development, Similipal was officially designated as India's 107th national park. The state allocated Rs 500 million under the 'Our Similipal' scheme for wildlife and plant conservation. During the ceremony, the CM honoured 185 Prakriti Mitra and 211 Prakriti Bandhu award winners for their environmental conservation efforts. He also unveiled several key publications, including the State Pollution Control Board FAQs Book and the Coastal Health Status Report. The event was attended by forest minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia, chief secretary Manoj Ahuja, and other senior officials. The programme began with a tree plantation drive and featured an exhibition by students from various districts. "A healthy environment is essential for a healthy society," Majhi concluded, calling for increased public awareness and participation in environmental protection efforts.

KCA completes U-15 trials; State Cricket Academy to come up in Thodupuzha
The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) has completed its final phase of selection trials to induct players into the revived State Cricket Academy, which will be opened in Thodupuzha. The selection for Under-15 players from the North Zone was held at Conorvoyal Stadium in Thalassery on Tuesday. A total of 24 shortlisted players from Palakkad, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod attended the trial. The process was overseen by former Ranji player and selector Ranji Philips with support from State coach Diju Das and sand conditioning coach A.K. Rahul Das. KCA secretary Vinod S. Kumar said the selection process was now complete, with 59 players assessed in total. Of them, around 20 will be inducted initially. 'This time we are focusing on quality over quantity. The goal is to produce players ready to represent the State in two years,' he said. The State academy, which had earlier functioned across a few centres but was shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, is being relaunched with renewed focus. Thodupuzha was chosen for its dual ground facilities, one of which will be fully dedicated to academy training, Mr. Kumar said. 'Most young players now train only on turf grounds. This academy will give them more ground exposure to build all-round skills in batting, bowling, and fielding,' Mr. Kumar said. The academy will be equipped with infrastructure including dormitories, study rooms, offices, and an indoor stadium. The construction of the facility is expected to be completed within six months. Until then, selected players will be accomodated in a rented facility, with arrangements being finalised with nearby schools for their education. The KCA also plans to set up zonal academies in the North, Central and South regions in the coming years as feeder centres to scout and develop cricketing talent across Kerala.

Odisha CM Mohan Majhi advocates for citizen-centric revenue administration in state
Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday called for the need of a transparent, responsive, and citizen-centric revenue administration. While attending the State-Level Revenue Officers' Conference at Lok Seva Bhawan here, Majhi strongly emphasized zero tolerance towards corruption, especially in land dealings, and warned that any irregularities—especially in tribal and scheduled caste land transactions—would attract strict action. 'Such illegal transactions are rarely possible without the notice of tehsildars. If you are found complicit, you will be held accountable,' he cautioned. The Chief Minister also asserted that his government's top priority is to reach the unreached—those historically neglected and underprivileged. He urged the officers to protect valuable government lands from encroachments and to resolve land-related cases like mutation and partition with utmost transparency and within stipulated timelines. 'We are planning several reforms in the revenue sector soon. While handling land dispute cases, remember you are rendering justice. Conduct yourself with integrity,' stated CM Majhi. The Chief Minister during his address hailed tehsildars as the "backbone of grassroots governance," stressing their pivotal role in delivering justice and resolving public grievances promptly. 'Your office must not be a place of fear for the public, but a space of trust,' he said. Reiterating his government's commitment to modernizing land administration, the Chief Minister declared, 'no person in Odisha shall remain landless. Even those possessing less than four decimals of land will be treated as landless and provided land under the government's land allocation scheme. "Effective implementation of this scheme depends on your active involvement." Majhi praised the role of revenue officers in the swift evacuation of 8.1 lakh people to 6,210 safe shelters under the "Zero Casualty" mission during cyclone 'Dana'. With the onset of the monsoon, CM Majhi directed officials to remain alert and proactive. 'The monsoon has already begun in some areas. Please monitor weather updates regularly and act as per SOPs to ensure public safety,' he instructed, noting that the monsoon season and cyclonic threats will persist till November. Concluding his speech, the Chief Minister said: 'The Revenue Department is the mirror of clean and good governance. Your benchmark should not be power or prestige, but dedication to public service.'
