Petit Bateau drops first eyewear collection for children

One hundred and thirty years after being first launched, French label Petit Bateau has introduced a new line of products for children, in addition to apparel, cosmetics and fragrances. This month, the brand founded in 1893 in Troyes, France, has dropped its maiden collection of children's eyeglasses and sunglasses. The products will be first distributed in France at specialist French opticians chain Krys, which operates over 1,000 stores.
Petit Bateau has licensed its eyewear to the Seaport ODLM group, which produces among others for Nuxe and Mauboussin. The Petit Bateau eyewear collection is inspired by a marine aesthetic and is available in two lines: one for nursery school children, featuring four eyeglasses and two sunglasses models, and the second for those of primary school age (6 to 10), consisting of 10 eyeglasses models, two models of sunglasses for girls and two for boys.
Petit Bateau, which is present in 55 countries through a series of e-shops and over 370 monobrand stores, is currently up for sale. Earlier this year, the Rocher group, which bought it in 1988, has indicated it intends to divest itself of the children's brand in order to focus on its beauty business, the Yves Rocher chain above all.
In an interview to Ouest France, Bris Rocher, president of the Rocher group, stated that the sale might take a while and that, for the time being, the group will continue to work on the brands it intends to sell, Petit Bateau and Stanhome, in the same way as before.
According to French news outlet L'Informé, the Rocher group has put the Rothschild & Co. bank in charge of finding a buyer, and several preliminary bids have reportedly already been filed.

Benin, which denies hosting foreign forces accused of destabilising Niger, claims it has made repeated overtures to ease the blockade, but efforts have failed despite mounting economic pain on both sides of the border. "Those who are suffering are the people of both countries," Nigerien haulier Ibrahim Abou Koura, who is based in Benin's economic capital Cotonou, said. General Abdourahamane Tiani has repeatedly accused Benin of harbouring French military bases training jihadists to undermine Niger. In May, he insisted the border would "remain closed", saying the fight was not with Benin but with French troops he claims are operating from its soil. The friction since the coup has taken a heavy toll on cross-border trade and travel between the two countries. "Buses aren't as full. There's not the same number of people," said Abou Koura, in the deserted yard of his compound in Zongo, where he once stored goods bound for major Nigerien cities. Still, transport workers in Cotonou say some movement persists, with the Niger River -- a natural border -- remaining a busy crossing despite the official closure. "Goods pass and travellers cross the river to continue their journey by bus on the Niger side," said Alassane Amidou, a resident of Malanville, a city in northeastern Benin. But for trucks unable to cross by water, perilous detours through jihadist-infested zones in Burkina Faso have become the only option. "The Niger-Benin corridor is currently the safest, most profitable and shortest route for transporters and businesses," said Gamatie Mahamadou, secretary-general of a consortium of Nigerien truck driver unions, in Niamey. He called on Niger's military rulers to "immediately normalise relations with Benin", warning that "workers' safety" and "the national economy" are at stake. Cautious optimism Niger's vital oil exports to Benin's port of Seme-Kpodji resumed in late 2024 via a cross-border pipeline after months of disruption. Uranium shipments from northern Niger remain stalled, awaiting either a diplomatic thaw or an alternative route. Benin has denied Niger's claims it is turning a blind eye to any destabilisation attempts and continues to extend an olive branch to Niger. Former presidents Thomas Boni Yayi and Nicephore Soglo travelled to meet General Tiani a year ago in a failed bid to restore ties. Beninese Foreign Minister Olushegun Adjadi Bakari in early June said he hoped for "prospects for recovery" provided security conditions are met. "We are hopeful that this will be resolved quickly ... the blockage is not on Benin's side," he told local media. "We have to accept the fact that we are not on the same wavelength sometimes... The door remains open." A new Beninese ambassador may soon be appointed to Niamey, following the quiet February recall of Gildas Agonkan, who had publicly apologised to the Nigerien people "on behalf of all Beninese and the authorities of Benin". "The apology to the Nigerien people was seen in Cotonou as a diplomatic weakening of the country during this crisis," said Guillaume Moumouni, an international relations expert. "The next ambassador must be someone of great repute and who knows Niger well enough to inspire trust and respect." Benin, which maintains it hosts no foreign military bases, has seen a surge in jihadist attacks this year and laments poor cooperation with neighbouring Sahel states also affected. "Not being able to talk directly with its neighbours increases Benin's vulnerability," said Lassina Diarra, head of the Strategic Research Institute of the International Counter-Terrorism Academy in Ivory Coast. Benin is set to elect a new president in April 2026, which could be a chance to restart "serious negotiations", Moumouni said.

Launched in December, Markets in Crypto-Asset (MiCA) insists on service providers obtaining a licence to operate legally in the European Union. It is issued once specific criteria on anti-money laundering, prevention of terror group financing, IT security and financial soundness have been implemented. Such a framework aims to protect investors and provide credibility to a sector deemed to be poorly regulated. Once obtained, a licence grants access to the entire EU market, which encourages some companies to seek authorisation in the most "accommodating" member state. Crypto experts, speaking to AFP, do not question the integrity of regulatory authorities in, for example, Germany and the Netherlands -- two EU members which account for the majority of the roughly 30 MiCA licences issued so far. Other bloc nations, including Malta, are in the crosshairs, however, according to these same experts, who preferred to remain anonymous. They point to, for example, the Mediterranean island hastily issuing licences before the formal implementation of collective standards. Rapid approvals "From time to time we see arriving on our market, via the (MiCA) passport, products approved by some of our colleagues with, let's say, a rather quick signing off," lamented the president of the financial markets authority in France, Marie-Anne Barbat-Layani, as she addressed the country's Senate in March. Barbat-Layani noted that EU markets regulator ESMA had launched a "peer review" of an unnamed regulator that is potentially too lax. When contacted by AFP, the watchdog declined to comment. The Maltese regulator, MFSA, neither confirmed nor denied that it was involved. An official working under her, Stephane Pontoizeau, added: "There is always the risk of someone trying to find the least demanding entry point into Europe." Crypto platform OKX, which had planned to hire about 100 staff in France making the country its "anchor" in Europe, ultimately opted for Malta. Peer Gemini followed the same strategy, having targeted Ireland before changing its mind, citing the "proactive engagement" of the Maltese authorities. "Malta began welcoming applications several months earlier than other regulators, which meant that we could start the application process earlier, build the teams and infrastructure required to operate under MiCA," noted Gemini's head of Europe, Mark Jennings. Other countries have been slow to grant approvals, with France having only just issued its first MiCA licence -- to French fintech firm Deblock -- amid accusations that its process is long and complex. France, however, sees it as granting companies greater time to prepare their application, with the country implementing a transition period through to June 2026. Pontoizeau insisted the French financial regulator is "determined not to add national requirements to European rules". According to lawyer Anne Marechal, former legal director at the regulator, there have been "cut-price approvals". She told AFP that "believing one can save a few weeks and a little money" puts companies' credibility at risk with investors. Economic sovereignty Obtaining the necessary certification can also require considerable outlay, whether for a MiCA or national licence. Tangi Le Calvez, founder of the crypto investment firm GOin, has invested about one million euros on obtaining a French licence, which inspired MiCA. He believes that many players will not be able to complete all the necessary steps. Already in 2017, EU member Estonia introduced its own mandatory licences for the crypto sector, which resulted in 75 percent of industry participants ceasing operations there, according to the Cointelegraph publication. While it remains to be seen if a similar outcome will occur in the wake of MiCA, Claire Balva, strategy director at Deblock, highlighted the risk of European crypto firms being replaced by rivals from places with more flexible rules, such as the United States and Dubai. Given their financial resources, such non-European companies would have no difficulty complying with EU rules, she insisted. Should "a significant portion of cryptocurrencies held by Europeans" be hosted "on American infrastructure", this also raises "questions of economic sovereignty", added Balva.

"I can put all my energy trying to be someone else or I can be myself and pour all of that energy into what I can create," she told CNBC in February. This philosophy will likely be on display when she appears Thursday at the VivaTech conference in Paris. Raised in Sete, Simo attended the elite HEC business school before joining eBay in 2006, first in France then in California. "People expect a very business-like story for why I decided to come to the US. It wasn't. The American Dream was on TV every night and that was an incredibly appealing thing," she said. 'Never Intimidated' In 2011, Simo joined Facebook, now Meta. She was given responsibility for video and monetization in 2014, a role she considers the defining moment of her career. Simo championed the company's pivot to video, which became central to Meta's strategy despite initial internal skepticism.
