Everybody loves Lucy. Aaron Sorkin's 2021 film about Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, not so much.
Speaking at a Hollywood event earlier in June, the couple's daughter Lucie Arnaz reignited controversy about Sorkin's award-winning biopic Being The Ricardos, labelling some scenes as 'a crock of poop.'
The 73-year-old complained Sorkin misrepresented her mother's relationship with her I Love Lucy writing team, and wrongly inflated tensions between Ball's co-stars Vivian Vance and William Frawley.
Lucille Ball children, Lucie and Desi, with their mum in 1984. Picture:Daughter Lucie, seen here with brother Dezi accepting the Legacy of Laughter Award for Ball in 2017, has labelled some scenes in Being The Ricardos as 'a crock of poop'. Picture:Set during a tense week of rehearsals for their famous show – when Ball was strained by Communist rumours and fears Arnaz was cheating – Being The Ricardos (now streaming on Tubi) explores the couple's tumultuous partnership.
Premiering in 1951, I Love Lucy transformed Ball from B-list movie actor to comedy legend. And yet Ball always insisted she wasn't naturally funny.
Crediting her writing team for her famous scatterbrain schtick, Ball told Rolling Stone in 1983: 'What I am is brave. I have never been scared. And there was a lot to be scared about. We were innovators.'
Always a shrewd businesswoman, Ball had to fight nervous network executives to have Arnaz cast as Ricky, and later include her real-life pregnancy in the show.

Far from being a turn-off, more than 44 million viewers tuned in to watch the fictional Lucy and Ricky welcome their first child (in reality it was the couple's second, having already welcomed daughter Lucie two years earlier). That episode also became Ball's happiest moment on the show.
'Because I was really having a baby [son Desi Arnaz Jr] and it was my last show before I had the baby, so it was real and it was the most exciting thing in my life,' Ball told Entertainment Tonight in 1984, five years before her death.
These events are detailed in Being The Ricardos, with Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem starring as the famously bickering couple.
Despite being an executive producer on the Amazon Prime biopic, Lucie complained that Sorkin dismissed her concerns about factual inaccuracies in his script, telling her: 'Well, what do you know?
You were 15 months old.'
'You can't talk to Aaron. He's Aaron Sorkin,' Lucie said.
'I tried to work on it and correct the incorrect parts, especially [my mother's] relationship with the writers.
'[It was] totally wrong. She adored those people. They got along so well; none of that backstabbing, crazy, insulting stuff.'
Kidman underwent a stunning transformation to play the Hollywood star.
Ball died in 1989 from a ruptured aortic aneurysm at the age of 77.
Despite reservations about the script, Lucie has always been glowing in her praise of Kidman and Bardem (who each gained Oscar nods for their performances), who initially faced criticism for their casting.
Some questioned why the Spanish actor had been cast to play the Cuban bandleader, prompting
Bardem to argue that nobody had complained when American actor Meryl Streep played British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, or Marlon Brando – an American with no Italian heritage – transformed into The Godfather's Vito Corleone.
'But me, with my Spanish accent, being Cuban? What I mean is, if we want to open that can of worms, let's open it for everyone … we should all start not allowing anybody to play Hamlet unless they were born in Denmark,' an exasperated Bardem told The Hollywood Reporter.

There was also backlash against Kidman because she isn't typically a comedic actress.
'There seems to be a lot of discussion about Nicole Kidman [and people saying] it should be Debra Messing … I don't know, but here's the deal and what you should understand: We're not doing a remake of I Love Lucy,' Lucie posted on Facebook ahead of the film's release.
'No one has to impersonate Lucy Ricardo [or do] any of the silly things. It's the story of Lucille Ball, my actual mother – not Lucy Ricardo – and her husband, Desi Arnaz, my dad – not Ricky Ricardo.'
Kidman watched re-runs, took dialect lessons and worked with a movement coach to become Lucille Ball.
The fuss knocked Kidman's confidence. And, during an appearance on Live With Kelly And Ryan, she confessed: 'When the reality of playing her hit me, I went, 'What I have said yes to?' To which I then went, 'Oh no, I'm not right. Everyone thinks I'm not right, so I'm going to try to sidestep this.''
To nail the role, Kidman watched re-runs, took dialect lessons and worked with a movement coach to capture Ball's physicality, particularly when recreating the famous I Love Lucy grape squashing scene.
In conversation with Chris Rock for Variety, Kidman admitted Ball was a tough act for anyone to follow, and that she was 'way out of my comfort zone'.

'She's Mount Everest. Just one of the most talented people to ever roam the earth.' Rock agrees.
'She could learn anything in a weekend. So, they would, like, write something on the show where she plays the tuba, and she would go, 'I can't play the tuba. Give me two days.'
But mostly, Kidman told the comedian, the toughest part of the gig was unleashing her own silly side. 'I'd like to be funny,' she said. 'I'm never cast funny.'

Celebrate Lucille Ball's incredible legacy with these shows, streaming now on Tubi.
The Lucy Show: In this follow-up to I Love Lucy (after Ball's divorce from Arnaz), the red-haired star plays a widow who goes to live with her divorced pal, Vivian.
Funny World Of Lucy: Broken into two chapters – the early and later years – this documentary is a deep-dive into Ball's life and career.
Lucy-Desi Westinghouse Special: The Lost Show: This restored and previously unaired special takes viewers behind-the-scenes, where Ball and Arnaz shop for dressing-room appliances while working on I Love Lucy.

‘Temu ACA': 10 News+ roasted by viewers

Don't miss out on the headlines from TV. Followed categories will be added to My News. Channel 10's replacement for The Project has been roasted by viewers during its debut episode on Monday. Despite Network 10 bagging an interview with the Prime Minister in a bid to win viewers over, it seems the new show has fallen flat with those watching at home. As it aired on Monday night, many took to X to share their views on The Project's replacement, and sadly for Network 10, most opinions appeared overwhelmingly negative, with some labelling 10 News+ a knockoff of rival network shows like A Current Affair. 'Anyone else bored so far? #10newsplus,' tweeted one viewer, with another agreeing: 'Same. Disappointing.' Television journalist Denham Hitchcock and his former Seven Network colleague Amelia Brace interviewed the Prime Minister on Monday. Picture: 10 'You replaced the project with a Temu ACA not seeing @theprojecttv is incredibly depressing. 10news+ sucks!' remarked a third viewer. Another complained about the format of the new show, tweeting: 'Please no more long investigation reports it's 6pm!' 'This is proper @Channel7 style commercial JUNK. It's like watching a cross between Fox News and Anchorman. Why the silly news voices!? questioned another disgruntled viewer. 'This is like ACA. Going to peoples houses to talk & them avoiding the cameras. Lots of nodding,' commented another viewer. One however, praised the show's lead story on convicted drug smuggler Debbie Voulgaris, who gave an exclusive interview from a Taiwan prison. 'Loving 10 news +, strong launch story. Is this the new Schapelle Corby story we all need to know about. 10 news should be very proud,' they wrote. The show's interview with the Prime Minister also sparked some viewer backlash, with journalists Denham Hitchcock and Amelia Brace being called out for their interviewing techniques, which saw the PM interrupted multiple times. Viewers complained that the hosts interrupted the PM during the brief interview. Picture: 10 'Some ridiculous questions and hectoring tone from both hosts in this very disappointing interview with the PM,' ranted one. 'You replaced #theprojecttv for this tabloid junk??I'm turning this off!' complained another. 'This is trash, so dry and bland. Time for the project 2.0 and a game show in a prime time slot up against Home and Away. Good luck!' tweeted a third unimpressed viewer. While a fourth added: Oh dear. I thought I would give 10 News Plus a go. I feel like we have regressed 20 years! An inauthentic painfully choreographed attempt at current affairs!' Meanwhile, it was an emotional final episode of The Project on Channel 10 on Friday after over 16 years on-screen with surprise appearances from Carrie Bickmore and Lisa Wilkinson. Regular hosts Waleed Aly, Sarah Harris, Sam Taunton and Georgie Tunny bid farewell to viewers during an emotional final episode. 'I can't actually look at you all, I'm so sorry, because you've just been an absolute dream to work with,' said Tunny as she broke down. 'There can be a lot said about the media industry and it's cat fights and all of this, but this has been a family from the beginning and I know that you'll still in my life.' Network 10 to air The Project replacement, 10News+

Don't miss out on the headlines from TV. Followed categories will be added to My News. Channel 10's replacement for The Project will air for the first time on Monday evening as part of the Network's latest bid for a ratings win. The Project aired its last episode on Friday and is being replaced by 10News+ which will be the first commercial free-to air news program to also be available as a video podcast via global streaming service Spotify. Television journalist Denham Hitchcock will co-anchor the show with his former Seven Network colleague Amelia Brace, with the pair insisting in promos for the show that they will 'put the truth first'. 10News+ is replacing The Project on Channel 10. Picture: 10 10News+ is replacing The Project on Channel 10. Picture: 10 X Learn More SUBSCRIBER ONLY Hitchcock has also promised a banger of a first episode too. He told Stellar Magazine that he was excited to have been 'let out of the gate' on stories and revealed he had one up his sleeve for months. 'It's an absolute blockbuster,' he teased. 'It's a story 60 Minutes, Four Corners and Spotlight would kill for.' 'It's a story on a Melbourne mother of five called Debbie Voulgaris. She was in the news cycle not too long ago. She got caught going into Taiwan with seven kilos of heroin and cocaine in her suitcase. She said that she was not guilty. In February this year, the day before her trial, she pled guilty. She was sentenced to 16 years prison in Taiwan, and since then, she's disappeared from the news cycle. Channel 10 are hoping for a ratings win. Picture: 10 'The real truth behind that story is something quite different. At the heart of it is a scam, and she was asked to go by someone that she knows very well, to go and deliver a suitcase. She did not know the contents of that suitcase. Now this investigation that you will see, will have all of the messages, the scam, how it started, who the person is, who sent her there who asked her to go and what is currently happening with her in Taiwan. In fact, you'll hear from her from a Taiwanese prison cell.' Starting off his career straight out of high school in 1995, Hitchcock answered phones and filled the biscuit barrel for Today Tonight on Seven. 'To truly try and make a difference and enrich the lives of the people you come across is what I'm most proud of,' Hitchcock said of his 30 years on the road. 'I've managed to do that in a lot of cases, and that gives me the most amount of hope. There's still beauty among the rubble and devastation. You just have to look for it.' Meanwhile, it was an emotional final episode of The Project on Channel 10 after over 16 years on-screen with surprise appearances from Carrie Bickmore and Lisa Wilkinson. Regular hosts Waleed Aly, Sarah Harris, Sam Taunton and Georgie Tunny bid farewell to viewers during an emotional final episode. Georgie Dunny was in tears on Friday as she bid farewell to viewers and her co-stars. Picture: 10 In the end, it all came down to heartbreaking final speeches from Georgie Tunny and Waleed Aly, both of whom fought back tears but in the end relented to their emotions as they clocked out of the studio one final time. 'I can't actually look at you all, I'm so sorry, because you've just been an absolute dream to work with,' said Tunny as she broke down. 'There can be a lot said about the media industry and it's cat fights and all of this, but this has been a family from the beginning and I know that you'll still in my life.' 'Thanks to the people who built this from nothing,' began Aly. 'The people who made this show 4,504 times, on camera and off. People long gone and here today. Every one of you is indispensable. Thank you to our guests over the years. To those who came to play, or persuade. To those who came on to be challenged, to meet us in the great public square of our lives, who disagreed with us in good faith over the years: thank you so much. You made us better. And thank you to you at home. Thanks for letting us into your hearts. Cliche thing to say is to let us in your living rooms but that is inadequate. Instead, thank you for letting us into your hearts.' Originally published as Network 10 to air The Project replacement, 10News+ on Monday night
