After losing their series opener to the Atlanta Braves on Monday, the New York Mets have now lost two consecutive games and nine of their last 10. As the Mets aim to turn things around, they will have a new face on the mound on Tuesday night. According to the team's official X account, they have reinstated RHP Frankie Montas from the 60-day IL, and he will make his first start of the season against Atlanta.
In his four rehab starts in Triple-A Syracuse, Montas struggled heavily, recording a 13.19 ERA in 14.1 innings pitched, allowing eight home runs, six walks, and throwing just six strikeouts.

Following the Mets' Montas announcement, fans made it clear that they were upset.
"13.19 ERA in the minors. Are the Mets trying to lose?" one fan wrote on X.
"Montas is about to get absolutely destroyed," wrote another.
"Fantastic time to bring in Montas. Critical divisional games and you start this guy? There has to be someone else in the minors who's ready to go. C'mon," a third fan wrote.
"Omg Montas is getting shelled tonight 😭😭😭," wrote a fourth fan.
Despite his poor rehab starts, the Dominican Republic native was solid with the Milwaukee Brewers last season. As the Mets look to gain some momentum, they will rely on Montas to help them do so on Tuesday night.

Mets let early lead get away, lose to Braves for 10th defeat in last 11 games

Matt Olson had three RBIs, including a tiebreaking single that capped a five-run sixth inning, and the Atlanta Braves rallied past the reeling New York Mets 7-4 on Tuesday night. Spencer Strider (3-5) overcame one rugged inning to win his third straight start, and the Braves took advantage of nine walks by six Mets pitchers. Atlanta, which has won nine of 12 overall, improved to 5-0 against its NL East rival this year -- all in the past eight days. After getting an encouraging performance from starter Frankie Montas in his Mets debut, New York blew a 3-0 lead and lost for the 10th time in 11 games. Sidelined since spring training by a right lat strain, Montas struck out five in five shutout innings on a 97-degree night at Citi Field. But reliever Huascar Brazobán walked the first three batters in the sixth, and Atlanta pounced. Ozzie Albies delivered a sacrifice fly, and left-hander José Castillo (0-2) entered before pinch-hitter Eli White drove in a run with an infield single on a low line drive that glanced off the glove of diving third baseman Brett Baty. Michael Harris II was hit by a pitch, and No. 9 batter Nick Allen tied it 3-all with his third consecutive single after beginning the night with a .556 OPS. One out later, Olson gave the Braves a 5-3 lead with a two-run single off Reed Garrett. Olson and Austin Riley each added an RBI double in the eighth. Raisel Iglesias got two outs in the ninth for his ninth save in 13 chances. Strider lost his first five starts this season after returning from right elbow surgery. But he beat the Mets for the second time in six days, striking out eight in five innings of two-hit ball. The right-hander walked three in a 33-pitch fourth as the Mets scored three times. But after Baty's two-run single, they didn't get another hit until Jeff McNeil's one-out double in the ninth. KEY MOMENTS After giving up an RBI double to Ronny Mauricio in the ninth, Iglesias retired Francisco Lindor with two on to end it. ... Harris got drilled in the right elbow by a 95 mph sinker and was removed in the bottom of the sixth. He is day to day. KEY STAT The game-time temperature was the hottest for a Mets home game since it was 98 degrees against Milwaukee at Shea Stadium in August 2001. UP NEXT Mets RHP Clay Holmes (7-4, 3.04 ERA) pitches Wednesday night against 20-year-old righty Didier Fuentes (0-1, 7.20), who makes his second major league start for Atlanta.

Whit Merrifield retires after twice leading MLB in hits over his 9 seasons

Vaughn Dalzell analyzes current odds for this year's American League Comeback Player of the Year award, including why he's looking past favorite Jacob deGrom and instead targeting veteran outfielder Byron Buxton. Whit Merrifield is retiring after a nine-season career that included twice leading the MLB in hits and three trips to the All-Star Game. The 36-year-old posted on social media that the birth of his daughter last year played a role in the decision. Merrifield, a utilityman whose career began with Kansas City, was granted free agency after finishing last season with Atlanta. He didn't play in 2025. 'At this point in my life, I'd much rather chase around a toddler than chase sliders,' wrote Merrifield, who had 192 hits for the Royals in 2018 and led the majors again a year later with 206. Merrifield played his last game with the Braves on Sept. 30, 2024, when they had to play a Monday doubleheader against the New York Mets to settle the National League wild-card race. Heavy rains from Hurricane Helene had rained out both games in Atlanta a week earlier. The Mets clinched a wild card with a victory in Game 1, which Merrifield played. He sat for the second game, which the Braves won to move on to the postseason as well. Merrifield was a ninth-round pick by Kansas City in the 2010 amateur draft and made his debut with the Royals six years later, the season after the club won its first World Series in 30 years. Merrifield played in every game from 2019-21, which included the 2020 season shortened to 60 games by the pandemic. The Royals didn't make the playoffs in any of Merrifield's six full seasons, and he was traded to Toronto in 2022. He went to the postseason twice with the Blue Jays, but wasn't a regular in the lineup. Merrifield led the majors in stolen bases three times, including a career-high 45 in 2018. He hit .280 with 94 homers, 485 RBIs, 29 triples and 218 steals in 1,147 games. The last All-Star trip for Merrifield came in 2023 with Toronto, and he signed as a free agent with Philadelphia that next offseason. The Phillies released Merrifield last July, and the South Carolina native signed with the Braves.

He returned to the Braves' lineup on May 23 and has been one of the best players in baseball ever since. On Tuesday, he officially etched his name into the history books. MLB announced that Acuna Jr. has recorded the 200th stolen base of his MLB career, making him just the 8th active player to reach that milestone.
