Kumgangsan likely to be named World Heritage Site

Korea Herald27-05-2025

Debate rekindled over two Koreas' efforts to see shared heritage recognized
The northern part of Kumgangsan, a vast mountain range along Korea's eastern coast spanning North and South Korea, is likely to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July.
The UN body's advisers — the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and International Union for Conservation of Nature — have asked the World Heritage Committee to greenlight their recommendation at an annual meeting to be held in July in Paris.
In the latest update Tuesday, UNESCO disclosed an evaluation by the two bodies, saying 'Mount Kumgang is a sacred mountain and bears an exceptional testimony to Korean mountain Buddhism traditions from the 5th century CE to the present.'
North Korea unilaterally sought Kumgangsan's listing as a UNESCO World Heritage Site four years ago.
Kumgangsan, which UNESCO officially refers to as "Mt. Kumgang — Diamond Mountain from the Sea," "exhibits an exceptionally rich diversity of distinctive near-white granite geomorphology, dramatically set within pristine biodiversity as seasons change," according to the agency.
UNESCO said the mountain, renowned for its striking beauty, will be a "cultural landscape" or "mixed site," which is one of the three labels given to World Heritage Sites, with the other two being cultural and natural sites. North Korea had initially sought to have the mountain named both a cultural site and a natural site.
A cultural landscape, UNESCO said, is a place "where the interaction between humans and nature has, over time, shaped a unique and distinctive landscape, carrying significant cultural values." The world body has been designating cutural landscapes since 1992.
While Kumgangsan's highest peak sits in North Korea, the mountain range stretches southward to Gangwon Province in South Korea, raising questions as to why a joint enlistment by the two Koreas was not sought.
In 2018, "ssireum," or traditional wrestling, was jointly listed by the two Koreas as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the first such shared listing across various UNESCO designations.
At this point, such a joint designation appears unlikely, according to a South Korean government official familiar with the matter.
"Once the Paris meeting in July approves the recommendation, there is little we can do on our end to float a joint inscription," the official said, referring to the 21-member World Heritage Committee meeting. Any ongoing interagency coordination for such efforts is close to nonexistent, the official added.
South Korea is also likely to see a new entry approved at the meeting from July 6-16.
Prehistoric carvings located at Bangu Stream in Ulju, Ulsan, have been recommended by ICOMOS for UNESCO status, a preliminary decision unlikely to see major opposition, according to officials at the Korea Heritage Service.
The Petroglyphs along the Bangucheon Stream 'manifest the artistry of the people that had lived in the Korean Peninsula,' a work of creative art that focused on rare topics such as whale hunting, the KHS quoted ICOMOS as saying in its decision.
The rock carvings demonstrate the 'cultural advancement by the people from southeastern coastlines of the Korean Peninsula,' ICOMOS said in its assessment.

Naver Pay's overseas QR payments soar amid travel boom

Internet giant Naver's payment platform Naver Pay said Sunday its overseas QR payment service is experiencing explosive growth as more Korean travelers opt for digital wallets abroad. The transaction volume for its overseas QR payment service surged by 70.7 percent in the first quarter compared to the previous quarter, the platform operator said. The spike is largely driven by a sharp increase in Korean tourists using the service in Japan, China and Thailand, the operator added. The number of new overseas users rose by 67 percent on-quarter, signaling a shift in consumer behavior as contactless payments become a norm among young travelers. Naver Pay's integration with PayPay, Japan's leading QR payment network, expanded the number of affiliated merchants by nearly 3 million, significantly boosting usage. Popular retail chains like Don Quijote and Sugi Pharmacy saw sustained increases in Naver Pay transactions. In China, Naver Pay remains the only Korean mobile wallet partnered with all three major local platforms — WeChat Pay, UnionPay and Alipay Plus — enabling seamless usage across most of the mainland. In May alone, transaction volume in China rose 40 percent compared to April. Notably, the number of users in their 20s more than doubled, with high activity concentrated in youth-frequented destinations such as Shanghai Disneyland, Darunfa Mart and Sunrise Duty-Free. Thailand also showed a strong performance, with QR payment volumes increasing 26 percent in May from April, especially in major tourist hotspots. Currently, Naver Pay supports QR payment in 65 countries and regions, the most extensive overseas coverage among all Korean digital payment platforms.

AliExpress' new platform challenges players in Korea's booming travel sector

AliExpress officially launched 'AliExpress Travel' at the 40th Seoul International Travel Fair, signaling its entry into the global travel market and introducing a new all-in-one platform for international travelers. According to the company on Thursday, AliExpress Travel enables users to book destinations, transportation, accommodation and tickets to attractions in a single, streamlined process. The launch comes amid intensifying competition in South Korea's online travel booking market, where traditional giants like HanaTour and ModeTour continue to hold strong, while newer digital-first platforms such as Yanolja, MyRealtrip and Naver Travel are rapidly gaining ground. AliExpress, known primarily for its e-commerce dominance, is now entering the fray with a global platform and aggressive pricing, aiming to differentiate itself through integrated services and localized support for Korean users. One of the platform's key features is its integration with Fliggy, an Alibaba affiliate, which allows users to access a global travel booking network. This includes over 1.5 million hotels worldwide, more than 25,000 direct flight routes, and entry to over 80,000 tourist attractions and theme parks. AliExpress is also offering limited-time promotions tied to its 'Travel Day' campaign. During the AliExpress Summer Sale on Friday, customers will be able to claim 50 percent flight discount coupons on a first-come, first-served basis, along with access to select travel deals at half price. To better serve Korean users, the platform has implemented localized support services. A dedicated Korean-language customer service center provides real-time assistance across all stages of the booking process, including reservations, payments and cancellations. "AliExpress aims to set a new benchmark in the global travel industry by expanding destination options, offering diverse themed travel packages, and delivering greater value," an AliExpress official said. "Just as our slogan says, 'For overseas travel, AliTravel is all you need,' we're committed to enhancing the travel experience for Korean consumers through seamless booking and exceptional deals." According to data from market research firm WiseApp Retail, AliExpress recorded 8.85 million monthly active users as of May, ranking third among e-commerce apps in Korea.
