
300 km of viaducts completed for Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project
The bullet train corridor between Mumbai and Ahmedabad has achieved a significant construction milestone with the completion of 300 km of viaducts, the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) announced on Tuesday (May 20, 2025).
'This achievement was marked by the launching of a 40-metre-long full-span box girder near Surat, Gujarat,' NHSRCL said in a statement.
Of the 300 km of the viaduct's superstructure, 257.4 km has been constructed using the Full Span Launching Method (FSLM), including 14 river bridges. An additional 37.8 km has been constructed using the Span by Span (SBS) method, while 0.9 km comprises steel bridges across 10 spans ranging from 60 to 130 metres across seven bridges. Another 1.2 km is built using Pre-stressed Concrete (PSC) bridges with 20 spans between 40 and 80 metres, and 2.7 km has been constructed within station buildings, the statement said.
For the 257.4 km of viaduct constructed using FSLM and the 37.8 km using SBS, 6,455 and 925 spans of 40 metres each were deployed, respectively.
The project has notably promoted the use of indigenously designed and manufactured equipment, such as straddle carriers, launching gantries, bridge gantries, and girder transporters. 'This marks a first for Indian infrastructure, showcasing India's growing capabilities in high-speed rail technology with support from the Japanese government,' the NHSRCL statement noted.
A spokesperson said the adoption of the Full Span Launching Method has 'significantly accelerated construction, as full-span girder erection is up to ten times faster than conventional segmental methods.' Each full-span box girder weighs approximately 970 metric tonnes, while segmental girders are employed selectively in locations where full-span installation is not feasible.
To support the scale of construction, 27 dedicated casting yards have been set up along the corridor. Steel bridges are being fabricated in seven workshops across the country - three in Gujarat and one each in Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and West Bengal.
In an effort to reduce noise pollution, more than 3 lakh noise barriers have been installed along the viaducts.
In addition to the viaduct construction, the NHSRCL has completed 383 km of pier work, 401 km of foundation work, and 326 km of girder casting. Track works over the viaducts have also commenced, with approximately 157 track kilometres of Reinforced Concrete track bed construction completed so far in Gujarat.
'Rolling stock depots with modern infrastructure are also taking shape in Maharashtra and Gujarat,' the spokesperson added. 'Stations, which will be integrated with rail and road-based transport systems to provide seamless travel to passengers, are progressing steadily.'

Dharwad: Nidec, a global leader in data centre equipment manufacturing, has set up a new plant with an investment of Rs 600 crore at the Beluru Industrial Area in Dharwad. The facility was officially launched by minister for large and medium industries, MB Patil. Speaking at the event, Patil said the new plant, which creates 800 direct jobs, will cater to the growing demand across sectors such as electric vehicles, data centres, renewable energy, battery storage, and general industries. "This unit will bolster local manufacturing, enhance R&D capabilities, and improve supply chain reliability," he said. The plant will manufacture heavy-duty machines of 2MW, 3MW, and 4MW capacity, essential for data centres, using advanced technology from Japan and France. These machines will be exported to markets in the US, the UAE, and Europe, alongside serving the domestic market. "While the facility has initially generated 800 direct jobs, the number is expected to rise to around 3,000 once the plant becomes fully operational," Patil informed. He also mentioned that 20 acres of land has been allocated for the company's battery solutions unit. In addition to heavy machinery, the plant will also produce power backup generators, wind generators, alternators for data centre, EV motors for three wheelers, four wheelers, trucks, elevator motors, and electronic drives-MV and LV. "For Nidec's project, we ensured timely facilitation by allotting the required land within just two years," he added. Addressing concerns about water usage, the minister clarified, "The Krishna River water tribunal has allocated 4 tmc of water for industrial purposes, of which, we are currently using only 0.5 tmc. We are not diverting water meant for agriculture. Moreover, the industries are provided only downstream water from the Hidkal Dam." Banks park big money with 'rival' mutual funds

Some blamed it on mutual funds, some on gold and others on derivatives trading by individuals. But the truth was a lot more 2025, Indian financial markets are seeing something that they don't see often. Banks, which, forever, used to seek deposits or borrow from the market to lend are doing something strange: they are pouring funds into mutual funds which, partly, compete with them for a share of the investor's mutual fund investments jumped 91% on year to ₹1.19 lakh crore as on March 21, 2025, from ₹62,499 crore a year earlier, data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) bulletin showed. Banks' MF investments had grown 28% in the previous fundamental business of banks is to lend to individuals who are keen to buy homes and cars, or to those entrepreneurs and companies which are looking to put up plants or set up services business. But they seem to be keen on giving funds to MFs instead of directly lending to borrowers. Why is it?There may be two reasons for that-one, that there is not much demand for loans from banks, and second, that they are suddenly finding themselves with surplus funds because of what the monetary authorities are doing."Besides suboptimal credit growth, bank investments in mutual funds schemes have gone up due to surplus liquidity conditions, favourable market conditions and relatively faster execution," said Vinod AN, general manager and treasury head at South Indian Bank Banks loans grew 12.1% in FY25, down from 16.3% a year earlier. This is probably due to slowing income growth and uncertainties on the jobs front for many. This situation is the opposite of what was the situation in the year before when loans grew 16.3%, and deposits were at 12.9% growth. This led to a lot of debate about whether there is a behavioural shift in savers."Households and consumers who traditionally leaned on banks for parking or investing their savings are increasingly turning to capital markets and other financial intermediaries," said former RBI governor Shaktikanta Das. "While bank deposits continue to remain dominant as a percentage of financial assets owned by households, their share has been declining. Households are turning to other avenues for deploying their savings instead of banks." While individual behaviour was part of the problem, there was also a monetary phenomenon at work. The RBI, which wanted to tame inflation kept the monetary conditions tight, forcing banks to borrow from it or the market. But that has since changed to accommodative from banking system is in surplus at ₹1.5 lakh crore. Banks probably have more than what they need to meet the loans are parking excess funds with MFs. Are they buying shares? Or, are they doing SIPs? Neither. They know that this is a short-term issue. They are also doing something to earn higher short-term returns. "Most investments are in liquid and money market schemes, which is also reflected in the MF investment numbers where investments are in zero risk short-term debt instruments such as T-bills where returns are higher," said Venkat N Chalasani, CEO, Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI).
