Gen Z has been hailed as the 'sober-curious' generation, with rates of risky behaviors such as drinking alcohol, as well as having sex and using drugs, falling to historically low rates. But one study recently put an even finer point on the trend: Young men in particular are the ones giving up binge drinking, defined as having five or more alcoholic beverages in one sitting for men, or four or more for women.
Fewer Gen Z men than women reported binge drinking in the last month between 2021 and 2023, according to the April 2025 study in JAMA. Though the gap between men's and women's drinking rates has been narrowing over the past several decades, in recent years women's alcohol use has outpaced men's for the first time ever.
The findings have raised alarm bells over women's high binge-drinking rates. But a closer look shows that the closing gender gap is driven as much, if not more so, by falling bingeing rates among men, especially young adult males. So what's inspiring young men to drink less or not at all? We looked into it.
All young adults were drinking less between 2021 and 2023, compared with the 2017-19 period, according to the study. Young women were binge drinking 13% less, but young men saw an even bigger drop — nearly 21%. So it's not that more women are necessarily binge drinking now — it's that fewer men are, and that shift has made women's rates seem higher in comparison.
Why young men are drinking less is still up for debate, notes study author and University of Pittsburgh internist Dr. Bryant Shuey. Though he sees the declining rates of binge drinking among young men as a 'public health success,' Shuey wonders if it's more complicated than a pure win. 'Are young people happy, socially connected and drinking less, or is it that middle-aged and young men are more lonely, less social and less willing to call up a friend for drinks,' he says. 'There's potential that there is a tradeoff here: Less alcohol and more loneliness, and we need to think about addressing both.'
There's no shortage of theories behind Gen Z's relative sobriety: Young people are big on prioritizing their health, and there's a booming health and wellness industry to meet the demand; the loneliness epidemic that Shuey noted; rising rates of young people choosing cannabis over alcohol; and Gen Z-ers choosing to scroll on a smartphone rather than partying with friends. A recent Dutch study suggested it may be simpler than all that: Young people are just too broke to buy drinks (and costs are rising).
Dry January and "sober-curious" posts on social media may also play a role, experts and men who have gotten sober suggest. Brandan Saho, a sports journalist and host of the podcast The Mental Game, says both trends have inspired a lot of young people to not drink. 'And once they see that their personal life is better and their physical health is better and that no one cares that they don't drink,' then picturing a sober life becomes that much easier, says Saho. 'It's not a defining thing like it would've been 10 or 15 years ago, when you weren't cool if you didn't drink.'
Fellow podcaster Shane Ramer says there was a 'lack of the cool element' to sobriety when he quit drinking. A decade later, he's hosting the That Sober Guy podcast and thinks that 'people are waking up to the fact that … it's so much cooler and respectable and how many more opportunities there are,' when you don't drink, he says.
Ramer, 43, and Saho, 31, are recovering alcoholics. Both grew up in households where drinking — often heavy drinking — was the norm, but it wasn't talked about. While they're not part of Gen Z, Ramer and Saho suspect that some of the younger generation had similar experiences. 'It took me hitting my rock bottom and almost not being alive for me to tell my dad,' says Saho, referring to his drinking. 'You should be able to talk to the men in your life, but until the past five or 10 years, no one did.'
That's changing with social media, podcasts and vodcasts, especially given that many influential (and, in some cases, controversial) male podcasters with large followings of young men are sober and vocal about it: Joe Rogan, Theo Von and Andrew Huberman, for example, have all quit drinking. On Reddit, several people said that Huberman's episode on the effects of alcohol have gotten them to quit drinking. Hearing some of them talk about giving up alcohol to focus on the work they enjoy doing resonated with Saho. As he says in one TikTok, it helped inspire him to stay sober.
While social media certainly has its downsides and dangers, Ramer describes a 'cultural shift' around drinking that's having a positive effect on young men. 'You have a lot of media and podcasts and celebrity people who are sober and open about it,' he says, adding that this openness provides a sense of community and a path forward for people, including young men, who are considering drinking less — or not at all.

Meanwhile, 65 percent of Baby Boomers said they had never called in sick due to stress. The new Rula Health report found those aged 18 to 24 (considered older Gen-Zers) sought therapy due to trauma 31.6 percent of the time, with those aged 25 and 34 (oldest of Gen-Z and the younger half of millennials) also seeking help for trauma at 30.8 percent. Even in the older age group of 45 to 54 (Gen-X), 30.1 percent reported they were going to therapy for trauma. The number only significantly dipped off at age 55 to 64 (the oldest of Gen-X and younger Boomers), when only 16.9 percent were in therapy for trauma, and even less, 10.3 percent of those aged 65 and older (Baby Boomers) said they went to therapy due to trauma. This reflects that Baby Boomers are the real outlier when it comes to their views on trauma and therapy, said Bryan Driscoll, an HR consultant who specializes in generational differences. "Their reluctance to seek trauma therapy reflects a generation that was told to suck it up, repress everything, and call it strength," Driscoll told Newsweek. "But unaddressed trauma doesn't go away - it just turns into bad parenting, addiction, rage, and broken families. Boomers don't dodge therapy because they're tougher than younger generations. They dodge therapy because they've been shamed out of it." Relationship therapist Joy Berkheimer, who is also the founder of Joy Collective, echoed this sentiment. "The reluctance among many Boomers to seek therapy reflects deeper cultural, societal, and historical contexts," Berkheimer told Newsweek. "They were raised in a time where mental health stigma was stronger, and seeking help could be seen as a sign of failure or weakness." Across the board, 54 percent of those in therapy were seeking it for help with anxiety, with 52.9 percent going due to depression. A similar rate to those in therapy for trauma (26.8 percent) were seeing a professional for stress or burnout at 33.1 percent. Those aged 45 to 54 reported the highest rates of anxiety and burnout, while those aged 55 to 64 showed the highest rates of depression. What People Are Saying Bryan Driscoll, an HR consultant who specializes in generational differences, told Newsweek: "This data doesn't show Gen Z and other younger generations are weak. It shows they're more self-aware and more willing to confront pain head-on, rather than bury it under a 'just deal with it' mentality. What people too often label as weakness is actually emotional literacy. Older generations were raised to believe therapy was for people who were broken. Gen Z knows it's for people who want to break cycles." Monica Cwynar, a licensed counselor and social worker with Thriveworks, told Newsweek: "Baby boomers (ages 55–64) and older generations show much lower rates of therapy-seeking behavior, particularly at only 16.9 percent. Their lower rate of engagement can reflect a cultural background shaped by different societal norms around mental health, where there has traditionally been a stigma associated with seeking help. Boomers are more likely to emphasize resilience, self-reliance, and the belief that personal struggles should be handled privately, that seeking help is a weakness, resulting in a hesitance to seek external support like therapy." Relationship therapist Joy Berkheimer, also the founder of Joy Collective, told Newsweek: "The data clearly does not support the narrative that Gen Z is 'weaker.' Instead, it shows that all generations are increasingly recognizing the importance of mental health, though their methods and comfort levels differ. What we're witnessing is a shift in cultural norms: more openness, less stigma, and greater access." What Happens Next Berkheimer said on a larger level, Gen Z is breaking down the stigmas around mental health and trauma, which could impact how people engage with therapy moving forward. "This generation is more likely to openly seek therapy, prioritize emotional well-being, and engage in practices that emphasize healing and self-awareness... In contrast, older generations may have been conditioned to view therapy as a last resort or a sign of weakness, often due to cultural and societal taboos rooted in stigma and distrust."

Measles vaccination rates drop after COVID-19 pandemic in counties across the US

Childhood vaccination rates against measles fell in the years after the COVID-19 pandemic in nearly 80% of the more than 2,000 U.S. counties with available data — including in states that are battling outbreaks this year. A Johns Hopkins University study, published in JAMA this week, illustrates where more vulnerable communities are located. The results mirror trends established at state and national levels: Routine childhood vaccination rates are dropping. 'When you look at the state level or national level … you really don't see those drastic drops. Those are there. They're real and they're really problematic,' said Lauren Gardner, an expert in infectious disease modeling at Johns Hopkins University who is the paper's senior author. Gardner also built the university's COVID-19 database. Most of the measles cases in the U.S. this year — 1,088 nationally as of Friday — are in unvaccinated people. It has been spreading among communities due to international and domestic travel. Three people have died from measles during this year's outbreaks, and 2025 is inching closer to becoming the worst for measles in more than three decades. Measles was eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, and the vaccine is safe and highly effective. Public schools nationwide require two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine before kindergarten, but the number of children with non-medical exemptions from those requirements hit an all-time high in the 2023-2024 school year. Health experts say community-level vaccination needs to be at 95% or higher to prevent outbreaks. The Johns Hopkins study looked at 2,066 counties across 33 states, comparing kindergarten vaccination rates averaged over school years from 2017-2020 to averages from 2022-2024. Where kindergarten data wasn't available, the researchers used a comparable rate. Here's what it looks like in counties where there have been outbreaks this year, including in Texas counties that are the epicenter of measles. Texas has logged 742 measles cases since late January, most in West Texas. Gaines County has 411 cases, the most in the state. Almost 2% of its population got measles. While the county saw a two percentage-point increase in vaccination rates after the pandemic, its 82.4% rate remains below herd immunity. Terry County (60 cases) and Yoakum County (20 cases) dropped below the 95% threshold for herd immunity after the pandemic, to 93.7% and 91.8% respectively. Lubbock County — which has seen 53 cases and is the closest metro area to Gaines County — was just below 95% before the pandemic, but dropped three percentage points after to 91.8%. El Paso County on the border of Mexico has had the third-most measles cases in Texas this year with 57. Its vaccination rate is higher than 95% but saw a 2.1 percentage-point decline to 96.5%. Counties with outbreaks in Kansas include Gray with 25 cases, Haskell with 11 and and Stevens with seven. Vaccination rates in Gray County dropped 23 percentage points after the pandemic, from 94% to 71%. Haskell County dropped 18 percentage points to 65%. And Stevens County dropped 0.5 percentage points to 90.5%. Colorado's outbreak, which is linked to an international flight that landed at the Denver airport in mid-May, involves six cases: five in state residents and one out-of-state traveler. Two people who got measles live in Arapahoe County in the Denver metro, where the vaccination rate dropped 3.5 percentage points to 88.4%. Three others live in El Paso County, home to Colorado Springs, where the vaccination rate dropped 3.8 percentage points to 80% post-pandemic. Pre-pandemic data in North Dakota wasn't available to Johns Hopkins researchers, but they looked at rates from school years ending in 2022, 2023 and 2024. North Dakota's first outbreak started in Williams County, which now has 16 measles cases. In the timeframe researchers looked at, vaccination rates in Williams rose from 84.6% in 2022 to 87.7% in 2023, only to drop back to 83.5% in 2024. Cass County has seven cases, and its rate has stayed steady at about 92.7%, while Grand Forks County, which has 10 measles cases, dropped from 95.4% to 93.4%.
