Industrial fire in Spain releases toxic chlorine cloud, forcing 160,000 residents indoors across five towns
MADRID, May 10 — Spanish authorities told more than 160,000 people near Barcelona to stay indoors today after a fire at an industrial property released a toxic cloud of chlorine over a wide area.
The blaze, in the coastal city of Vilanova i la Geltru just south of Barcelona, took hold of a building storing pool cleaning products, the regional fire service said.
'If you are in the zone that is affected do not leave your home or your place of work,' the Civil Protection service said on social media.
The at-risk area stretched across five municipalities from Vilanova i la Geltru to the village of Calafell, near Tarragona.
'No casualties' had been reported, the fire service said on X, adding that a large number of units deployed to the scene had brought the fire under control.
It said it was 'monitoring the column (of gas) caused by the blaze for changes and for its toxic levels'.
'It is very difficult for chlorine to catch fire but when it does so it is very hard to put it out,' the owner of the industrial property, Jorge Vinuales Alonso, told local radio station Rac1.
He said the cause of the fire might have been a lithium battery. — AFP

Temperatures exceeded 40C in parts of southern region of Andalusia. While unusual, this is not the first time Spain has experienced exceptionally high May temperatures. Similar events occurred in 2015 and 2022, AEMET said. 'This reflects a scenario where summer-like conditions are arriving earlier and more frequently, even before spring has ended,' said AEMET spokesperson Ruben del Campo. Scientists say climate change driven by human activity is increasing the length, frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as heatwaves. Firefighters contain Mukah sago plantation fire after three days, rain puts out final flames
MUKAH, May 11 — Firefighting operations on the third day at a sago plantation in Sebakong, Mukah, concluded successfully on Sunday morning, aided by favourable weather conditions and effective fire containment strategies. According to the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), firefighters from the Mukah fire station arrived at the scene around 9.30am and discovered that the fire was already under control. 'The flames did not spread beyond the main road, largely due to a sizeable drainage ditch that acted as a natural firebreak and a shift in wind direction towards the north,' Bomba said in a added that these factors, combined with a lack of flammable material in the affected area, significantly slowed the fire's progression.'The firefighting team carried out monitoring and conducted light extinguishing work using a 200-foot hose line, powered by a floating pump that sourced water from a nearby ditch.'By 10.50 am, the operation was called off after heavy rainfall in the area fully doused the remaining flames, and the site was deemed safe.'The fire was first reported to Bomba at 9.45am on May 9, and initial assessments indicated that about 12 hectares of land between plantation blocks C25 and C26 had been affected. — The Borneo Post

Mukah sago plantation fire rages into day two, winds fan 300ha inferno
MUKAH, May 11 — A large-scale fire continues to rage for the second consecutive day at a sago plantation in Sebakong, Mukah. According to the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the fire spread to an estimated 300 hectares (ha) across new sectors of the plantation yesterday. 'However, the nearby Kampung Sitieng village, located about five kilometres away, remains safe and unaffected. 'Residents have been urged to stay alert and report any escalation,' it said, adding that firefighters continue to monitor the area closely. Bomba said they have also requested estate management to provide updates and support ongoing fire suppression efforts. Bomba said they received a report about the incident at 9.54am on May 9 and firefighters from the Mukah fire station were deployed to the scene. 'The initial blaze engulfed approximately 12 hectares between plantation sectors C25 and C26, part of a larger 50-hectare sago plantation,' it added. Firefighters utilised a floating water pump, two 500-foot hoses, and nearby drainage ditches as water sources in their suppression efforts.
