Prince William warns world's oceans are 'diminishing before our eyes' in call for urgent action
Prince William has warned the world's oceans are "diminishing before our eyes" and called on the world to "think big" on how to revive them.
Speaking at the Blue Economy and Finance Forum in Monaco on Sunday, he said everyone is responsible for change - both negative and positive.
"What once seemed an abundant resource is diminishing before our eyes," he said.
"We all stand to be impacted."
It comes as he teamed up with Sir David Attenborough in a social media video to talk about the harmful effects of over-fishing, pollution and temperature rise on our marine environment.

"This challenge is like none that we have faced before," the royal continued.
"But I remain an optimist. I believe that urgency and optimism have the power to bring about the action needed to change the course of history."
The Prince of Wales is also the founder and president of the Earthshot Prize, a global award that celebrates environmental initiatives. Finalists for this year's award were due to attend the event.
He ended his speech with a call to action intended to go further than just Monaco or even Europe.
"Halfway through this decisive decade, I call on all of you to think big in your actions.
"Let us act together with urgency and optimism while we still have the chance.
"For the future of our planet. For the future generations. We must listen to the words of Sir David Attenborough: 'If we save the sea, we save our world'."
To coincide with the event, and to attract a greater audience, a YouTube video was posted by Kensington Palace, showing William and Sir David Attenborough laughing together as Sir David tried on his first-ever diving helmet.
But their conversation soon turned to more serious matters when they discussed Sir David's new film, Oceans, and the horrific examples of damage uncovered.

This is the moment Chelsea's Marc Cucurella was apparently caught using his mobile phone while behind the wheel of his £140,000 Mercedes G-Wagon. Cucurella has been a near permanent starter for Chelsea this season in the Premier League, after being part of the squad that beat England in the final of the Euros with Spain in July 2024. The passenger added: 'It was really dangerous and very irresponsible of him, first to be doing it at all.' Drivers caught using a mobile phone behind the wheel in the United Kingdom face being hit with a £200 fine and six points on their driving licence. Cucurella moved to west London from Brighton in a £60million deal in 2022. The Spain international struggled for consistency on the pitch, and later revealed that a number of circumstances away from the game also contributed to his dip in form, including the burglary of his family home. However, as Cucurella settled at Stamford Bridge, the defender became an increasingly vital presence in the set-ups of head coaches Mauricio Pochettino and Maresca. Cucurella also starred for Spain at last summer's European Championship, helping La Roja take him the trophy for the fourth time in the nation's history. He features alongside his wife Claudia Rodriguez in the second season of Amazon's Married To The Game. Cucurella and Rodriguez allowed cameras to follow their daily lives, with the impact of their son Mateo's autism on the family one of the emotional flashpoints of the programme. Cucurella and his family lost £62,000-worth of property in the break-in, including Louis Vuitton bags.

Nick Frost has revealed he was targeted by trans activists after accepting the role of Hagrid in the new HBO Harry Potter series. The actor and comedian, 53, had to turn off Instagram comments on the post announcing his casting after being swamped with criticism for collaborating with JK Rowling. The author, who is also serving as an executive producer of the new series, has become a vocal presence in the transgender debate. However, Frost has distanced himself from Rowling's trans views. 'She's allowed her opinion and I'm allowed mine,' he told The Observer. 'They just don't align in any way, shape or form.' Rowling is now seen as a leading figure in the trans debate, having staunch views on gender identity and protecting women-only spaces. She hailed the Supreme Court's landmark ruling that transgender women are not legally women as a victory and posted a picture of herself enjoying a drink and a cigar in April. But these views have caused high profile fall-outs with original cast members, including Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, who all distanced themselves from Rowling. Sir David Attenborough almost killed by faulty scuba diving equipment

The natural historian and broadcaster, 99, first appeared on screens in the 1950s, when he presented natural history programmes including Coelacanth and Zoo Quest for the BBC. His TV credits now span eight decades, with Sir David since presenting shows including Wildlife on One, The Blue Planet and Planet Earth, as well as the newly released film Ocean. However, he's now recalled a moment early in his career when he came close to a deadly situation. Speaking to Prince William at an event to promote his new documentary Ocean, Sir David was presented with an open-circuit helmet. Picking it up and putting it on his head, he spoke about testing a scuba diving outfit while filming on the Great Barrier Reef in 1957. 'When I put mine on for the first time I suddenly felt water and thought, 'this can't be right'. But by the time the water got about there I thought, 'I'm sure this is not right',' he said. 'Of course, you've got this thing screwed on top of you and you can't breathe or make yourself heard. I was saying 'get it off me'.' Sir David then spoke about the director leading the documentary initially refusing to take his concerns seriously. 'He grabbed it and said it was fine, but I again said there was a fault, and he put it on, and I'm happy to say, he went underwater and came up even faster than I did, because there was actually a fault on the thing,' he added. During the discussion Sir David also described his first dive as a 'sensory overload' and commented on how the reefs he first visited decades ago had now been devastated. 'The awful thing is that it's hidden from you and from me and most people,' he said. 'The thing which I was appalled by when I first saw the shots taken for this film, is that what we have done to the deep ocean floor is just unspeakably awful.' 'I mean, if you did anything remotely like it on land, everybody would be up in arms. If this film does anything, if it just shifts public awareness, it'll be very, very important, and I only hope that people who see it will recognise that something must be done before we destroy this great treasure.' The pair spoke as part of the promotional launch for Ocean, which sees Sir David 'drawing on a lifetime of experience to reveal Earth's most spectacular underwater habitats, showing that we're in the greatest age of Ocean discovery and highlighting its vital importance'. Sir David said he hoped the film could 'expose something new' and encourage viewers to act to save the destruction of the ocean. Despite his indelible impact on the world and environmentalism, last year his producer Mike Gunton told Metro Sir David hated being called a 'national treasure'.
