Hmar youth rises above ethnic violence to secure UPSC rank

Guwahati:
Jerry Lalhratthang Buongpui
, a youth from the Hmar community from Manipur's Churachandpur district, achieved remarkable success in the UPSC exams, securing the 999th rank, despite facing immense challenges due to the ethnic conflict in his home state. Having left Manipur before the violence erupted in May 2023, Jerry stayed focused on his studies in Delhi and has not been able to return to his ancestral village, Rengkai, in the violence-affected Churachandpur district.
Though Jerry spent much of his childhood in Meghalaya due to his father's work, visiting his ancestral village in Manipur remains a distant dream. "Free movement still has not been possible in Manipur. Landing at Imphal Airport would be risky, and reaching Churachandpur from Aizawl Airport is a long and difficult journey," he said.
Jerry's family faced devastation during the violence, with his uncle's house near Imphal Airport being torched, forcing the family to relocate to Guwahati. His aunt's family also had to leave their belongings and move to Delhi during the turmoil.
"A peace building process should be initiated where leaders from all affected ethnic groups are invited and chalk out a solution which will be favourable for all. Consensus must be the foundation to bring about an effective and lasting peace," Jerry told TOI, on Tuesday.

Jerry's academic journey began in Shillong, where he completed his education from matriculation to master's level, before moving to Delhi for UPSC coaching in 2020. Though he appeared for the Manipur Civil Service exams in 2023, the mains were cancelled due to the outbreak of ethnic conflict.
The Hmar Students' Association congratulated Jerry on his achievement, calling it a beacon of hope for the Kuki-Zomi-Hmar community.

Macron will visit Greenland this month, defying Donald Trump
In a challenge to President Trump's vow to take control of Greenland, President Emmanuel Macron of France will visit the Arctic island on June 15 with the aim of "contributing to the reinforcement of European sovereignty. " The French presidency announced the visit on Saturday, saying Macron had accepted an invitation from Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Greenland's PM, and Mette Frederiksen, the Danish PM, with whom it said Macron would discuss "security in the North Atlantic and the Arctic". Greenland, a semiautonomous island that is a territory of Denmark, a Nato ally, has been thrust in recent months from a remote, uneventful existence to the centre of a geostrategic storm by Trump's repeated demands that it become part of the US, one way or another. "I think there's a good possibility that we could do it without military force," Trump said in March, but added he would not "take anything off the table." Macron, who has seen in the provocations directed at Europe by Trump govt an opportunity for European assertion of its power, will be the first foreign head of state to go to Greenland since Trump embarked on his annexation campaign this year. US V-P JD Vance visited Greenland in March. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Flexible Phone Plans for Small Biz Undo The trip was drastically scaled back and confined to a remote military base after threat of local protests. The French announcement did not allude to Trump or the US, but it was clear the intent and symbolism of the visit is that Greenland is not there for the taking on the whim of an American president. Early this year, France's foreign minister, Jean-Noel Barrot, offered to send troops to help defend the island. Denmark demurred. Macron will stop in Greenland on his way to the G-7 meeting in Canada that runs from June 15 to 17. Trump has also suggested Canada should be absorbed into the US as the 51st state, so Macron will be travelling from one of Trump's targets for territorial expansion to another. The announcement said discussions among the leaders in Greenland would also focus on "climate change, energy transition and security in supply of critical minerals. " nyt

Gaza mission curbed: IDF intercepts, boards Greta Thunberg's yacht; group calls detention 'arbitrary' and 'unlawful'
(Source: freedomflotilla) A civilian vessel carrying Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and other volunteers was intercepted by Israeli forces on Monday in international waters. According to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), which organised the mission, the ship Madleen was attacked at 3:02 am CET. The vessel was attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza in defiance of the Israeli naval blockade. The group claims the ship was unlawfully boarded, its unarmed crew abducted, and its cargo of food, baby formula and medical supplies confiscated. 'Israel has no legal authority to detain international volunteers aboard the Madleen,' said Huwaida Arraf, a human rights attorney and Freedom Flotilla organiser. 'This seizure blatantly violates international law and defies the ICJ's binding orders requiring unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza. These volunteers are not subject to Israeli jurisdiction and cannot be criminalised for delivering aid or challenging an illegal blockade—their detention is arbitrary, unlawful, and must end immediately. ' Footage posted on the Madleen's Telegram channel shows activists putting on life jackets in anticipation of the interception. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Keep Your Home Efficient with This Plug-In elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Learn More Undo Israel's military reportedly boarded the vessel after warning it to change course. Israeli defence minister Israel Katz confirmed the order to prevent the ship from reaching Gaza. 'I have instructed the IDF to act so that the hate flotilla does not reach the shores of Gaza and to take all necessary measures to that end,' he said. 'To the antisemitic Greta and her friends who echo Hamas propaganda, I say clearly: You'd better turn back – because you will not reach Gaza.' The Israeli foreign ministry had earlier called the flotilla a 'media gimmick' disguised as a humanitarian mission. 'The maritime zone off the coast of Gaza is closed to unauthorised vessels under a legal naval blockade, consistent with international law,' the ministry posted on X. 'The yacht is claiming that it is delivering humanitarian aid. In fact, it is a media gimmick for publicity (which includes less than a single truckload of aid) – a 'selfie yacht'. ' This is not the first time the FFC has faced military action. The group says a previous vessel, Conscience, was bombed by an Israeli drone in European waters, injuring four civilians and leaving the ship disabled and on fire. In response, the coalition has called for the immediate release of all detained volunteers, the delivery of the confiscated aid directly to Palestinians, and accountability for what they call a pattern of unprovoked military aggression.

'Violated our standards': ABC suspends Terry Moran after Trump rant; White House calls remarks ‘unhinged and unacceptable'
ABC's Terry Moran suspended after Trump rant ABC News suspended senior national correspondent Terry Moran on Sunday after he posted a harsh social media rant targeting Stephen Miller, senior White House adviser, and US President Donald Trump . Moran's comments drew sharp criticism from the Trump administration and US vice president JD Vance. On early Sunday, Moran took to X to describe Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff for policy, as a man 'richly endowed with the capacity for hatred.' He wrote, 'The thing about Stephen Miller is not that he is the brains behind Trumpism. Yes, he is one of the people who conceptualizes the impulses of the Trumpist movement and translates them into policy. But that's not what's interesting about Miller. It's not brains. It's bile. Miller is a man who is richly endowed with the capacity for hatred. He's a world-class hater. You can see this just by looking at him because you can see that his hatreds are his spiritual nourishment. He eats his hate.' Moran also criticised Trump, saying, 'Trump is a world-class hater. But his hatred only a means to an end, and that end his own glorification. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Device Made My Power Bill Drop Overnight elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Pre-Order Undo That's his spiritual nourishment.' ABC News responded swiftly, saying, 'ABC News stands for objectivity and impartiality in its news coverage and does not condone subjective personal attacks on others. The post does not reflect the views of ABC News and violated our standards — as a result, Terry Moran has been suspended pending further evaluation.' Moran later deleted his posts, but screenshots had already circulated on social media. JD Vance condemned Moran's remarks, calling them 'an absolutely vile smear of Stephen Miller." The controversy unfolded amid heightened tensions in Los Angeles, where hundreds of protesters attempted to disrupt Border Patrol operations near Paramount, California. In response, Trump deployed 2,000 National Guard troops to control the unrest. During the protests, Miller described the events on X as an 'insurrection" and said, 'We will take back America.' Terry Moran is known for his outspoken views on politically sensitive topics. Last November, he predicted Trump would win both the 2016 and 2024 elections, describing him as a nationalist with 'an authoritarian cast of mind.' Moran said, 'The way to understand Trump (as I said on ABC Election Night 2016) is to see him not as a Republican or Democrat, not as a conservative or liberal, but as a Nationalist.' Earlier this year, Moran secured a high-profile interview with Trump marking the president's 100 days back in office. The interview included heated exchanges about deportations and Trump's ties to the gang MS-13. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt also condemned Moran's posts as 'unhinged and unacceptable' and said the administration had reached out to ABC about holding him accountable.
