Stock in four key dams inches up as catchments receive heavy rain spells since monsoon's arrival
Pune: The Khadakwasla circle's four dams recorded a 0.5 TMC increase in collective water stock on Monday, following a good spell of rain in the catchments since the monsoon's arrival on May 25.
The collective storage in the four dams reached 5.77 TMC (20%) on Monday evening, with Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar recording over 100mm of rainfall each in the 24 hours ending Monday evening. An officials from the irrigation department said, "Dams including Mulshi, Gunjawani and Vadivale received over 75mm of rainfall each. Pavana dam, which supplies water to Pimpri Chinchwad, received over 50mm of rainfall.
Water stock in most dams can go up if heavy rainfall continued in catchments over the next few days."
The irrigation department said none of the dams discharged water into the rivers as their individual stocks were yet to reach above 50% of their individual capacities. An official from the department said warnings would be issued in advance about the possible release of water from the dams. "Information on some social media platforms about the release of water from Khadakwasla and other dams is untrue," the official clarified.
Officials from Pune Municipal Corporation said they were in touch with the irrigation department regarding the possible release of water. "We will issue warnings in low-lying areas in case of water release from the Khadakwasla dam. As of now, there is no update from the irrigation department on any water release," an official said.
