MILWAUKEE - January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month and some of the detectives who work in the Milwaukee Police Department's specialized unit want to bring awareness and stop traffickers.

Two detectives part of MPD's Human Trafficking Unit within the Sensitive Crimes Division have been working to stop the crimes. Detectives Michael Walker and Anna Flores say oftentimes, traffickers prey on the vulnerable, offering help, but using violence to control.
Human trafficking often goes unreported. There's no exact number of victims.

Over the last two years, the MPD has investigated a combined 70 cases – three so far this year.
What they're saying
"It could be anybody. It's all over the place, in every neighborhood," Flores said. "They're being branded, they're being repeatedly beaten, they're being raped."
"It occurs at gas stations, restaurants, at hotels," Walker said. "It's not necessarily what we see in mainstream movies where a white van pulls up and somebody's kidnapped and getting into sex trafficking."

Maria Rozek is a trauma counselor and victim advocate within the unit.
"This is not a new issue in our community, this has been going on for decades," Rozek said. "We, as a city, as a department are invested in trying to build safety within our community. The more we talk about a subject, it unravels."
What we know
Investigators say a lot of trafficking is happening to young people.

"A lot of it is taking place online," Flores said. "We do frequent websites to see if we can spot any known missing juveniles."
Investigators are trying to bring awareness and encourage people to come forward.

Man accused of burglarizing McHenry home twice arrested after standoff
MCHENRY, Ill. (WGN) — Felony charges have been filed against a man accused of burglarizing a suburban home two different times this week after he was taken into custody on Thursday afternoon following an hours-long standoff in McHenry. According to McHenry police, 44-year-old Patrick Anderson has been charged with two felony counts of residential burglary, one felon count of obstructing justice, as well as misdemeanor counts of resisting a peace officer and criminal damage to property. Anderson was peacefully taken into custody after an hours-long standoff with MPD Thursday in a residential area near Venice Avenue and Court Street, adjacent to the Fox River, due to what police said was an 'isolated' police incident. MPD said what led to the standoff originated three days prior on Monday, when they responded to a residence in the 1200 block of North Green Street in McHenry for a burglary. Three days later on Thursday morning, MPD was called to the same residence for another reported burglary. While investigating, police said they identified Anderson as a suspect. Shortly after the second reported burglary, MPD went to Anderson's residence. When police arrived, he retreated inside and refused to respond to MPD's commands. MPD, with the assistance of the NIPAS Emergency Services Team, said they made entry into Anderson's residence and took him into custody. Photo of bomb threat found on Allegiant flight at PIE released, FBI continues search for suspect
The Brief The FBI is seeking public assistance in identifying the person behind a bomb threat on an Allegiant flight at St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport. The FBI's Tampa Field Office released a photo of the bomb threat, which was found written on a lavatory door on an Allegiant Airlines flight on April 25. Operations at the airport were shut down for hours that night after the incident. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - More than a month after an Allegiant Airlines flight attendant found a bomb threat just before taking off from St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport, the FBI is continuing to search for the person responsible. The FBI's Tampa Field Office released a photo of the bomb threat, which was found written on a lavatory door on an Allegiant Airlines flight on April 25. It comes as they seek the public's assistance in finding the person who wrote it. Follow FOX 13 on YouTube The backstory Allegiant passenger onboard flight #2006, which was departing PIE, headed to Cincinnati, Ohio. But as the plane was taxiing from the gate just before departing, a flight attendant found the message on the lavatory door. The passengers were quickly deplaned, and the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office swarmed the airport and spent hours that night searching multiple flights for anything suspicious.
