ISI wants someone to win: Assam probing Pak-linked social media profiles

India Today2 days ago

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said that around 1,000 Facebook accounts, suspected to be operated from Pakistan and Bangladesh, are under investigation by the state police. He added that these accounts are allegedly targeting Assam politics and stated that even Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence "wants someone to win".He added that these Facebook profiles are allegedly involved in coordinated online activity aimed at influencing Assam's political environment ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.advertisementAddressing the media after a cabinet meeting, Sarma said that he had directed the Special Branch of Assam Police to scrutinise over 2,000 Facebook accounts that have been regularly commenting on political developments in the state. According to him, nearly half of these accounts were traced to users based in Pakistan and Bangladesh.
"These accounts were created on the same day by members of a particular community, keeping the upcoming elections in mind," Sarma said, suggesting a planned effort to manipulate public perception. He added, "If you go through the comments, you will realise that these are not names familiar to our state. The intention is clear. Somebody wants a particular outcome in the elections. Even the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) wants someone to win."The chief minister also indicated that the number of such accounts could increase in the coming months.advertisementSarma further said that more information will be made public on September 10, when the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam Police is expected to submit its report regarding Congress MP and Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi and his wife Elizabeth Colebourn. The ongoing investigation reportedly looks into Elizabeth's earlier stay in Pakistan during her work with a climate change NGO and Gogoi's visit to the country in 2013 before he became an MP.Gogoi has denied any wrongdoing and accused the Assam government of targeting his family to divert public attention. He has demanded that the chief minister release the findings of the investigation immediately rather than wait until September. He also clarified that his wife's stay in Pakistan was purely professional and unconnected to any political activity.Must Watch

Himanta visits Hailakandi, Sribhumi relief camps, vows timely infra repair

1 2 3 4 5 6 Silchar: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday visited the flood-ravaged districts of Hailakandi and Sribhumi in the Barak Valley. He assured affected residents of providing timely disbursement of rehabilitation grants and swift repair of damaged infrastructure. This marks Sarma's second visit to the flood-hit region within four days, underscoring the gravity of the situation. Speaking to the media in Sribhumi after inspecting multiple relief camps, the CM said, "Flood-related problems may persist till July. I will return before Durga Puja to ensure that roads and infrastructure are restored." Sarma said district commissioners have been directed to carry out thorough damage assessments. "Once the water recedes, financial assistance will be provided as per norms. We did so last year and will do the same this year," he added. During his visit, the CM toured relief camps in Kalinagar and Panchgram in Hailakandi and later in Sribhumi, interacting with displaced residents. While camp conditions were reported to be satisfactory, affected families voiced concerns over the loss of household items like utensils and clothing. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Sarma urged all affected individuals to submit their bank details to facilitate direct transfer of relief funds. Highlighting the broader issue, Sarma acknowledged that unplanned urban development, particularly without adequate drainage systems, has contributed to recurring artificial flooding in key Assam cities. "This is especially severe in Guwahati, but Dibrugarh and Silchar are also facing similar issues. We need sustainable drainage solutions that can cope with rapid urban growth," he said. So far, 21 people have died in floods and landslides across Assam this year, with over 5.6 lakh affected across 16 districts. Relief and rehabilitation efforts are underway as authorities monitor the evolving situation. In a political swipe, Sarma also targeted Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, claiming three out of four members of Gogoi's family are foreign nationals — a remark seen as escalating tensions between the ruling BJP and opposition Congress. This fake cardiologist performed 50-plus heart surgeries at Faridabad hospital in 7 months

Faridabad: An MBBS doctor masquerading as a cardiologist performed more than 50 heart procedures over seven months before his fraudulent practice was discovered. Though a qualified doctor, Pankaj Mohan Sharma put countless lives at risk at a heartcare centre in Badshah Khan civil hospital because he was not authorised to perform critical cardiac surgeries. Dr Sharma came under cops' scanner when Sanjay Gupta — a lawyer and social activist — lodged a complaint at NIT Faridabad police station on April 11, quoting sources to allege he bagged additional degrees based on forged documents. Preliminary probe revealed that the accused had been operating under a stolen identity, misappropriating national medical commission's registration number assigned to Dr Pankaj Mohan, a legitimate cardiologist practising in the city. Police said Dr Sharma was hired in July last year by Mediterina Hospital, which runs the heartcare centre at Badshah Khan on a public-private partnership mode. "The hospital management continued to employ an unqualified and fraudulent doctor who lacks any degree or recognised specialisation in cardiology. Dr Sharma falsely claimed qualifications of MD and DNB (cardiology), which are entirely fraudulent," said lawyer Gupta. After coming to know about the fraud, Dr Mohan lodged a complaint with IMA in Jan this year, alleging illegal use of his credentials by the other doctor. He also slapped a legal notice on Dr Sharma. What raised eyebrows was that Dr Sharma suddenly stopped attending the centre in Feb after being asked to produce his medical degree. "Many patients began enquiring about him and eventually visited the real Dr Pankaj Mohan. When Dr Mohan clarified that he had never worked at the heart centre, the allegations strengthened," said a doctor at Badshah Khan. Adding another layer to the deception, Dr Sharma maintained a Facebook profile under the name 'Kshitiz Mohan' and was listed as the director of a film production firm, raising more questions on his medical credentials. Dr M Pratap Kumar, CMD of Mediterina Hospital who also heads the heart centre at Badshah Khan, confirmed that Dr Sharma had been removed. "He applied through formal HR channels as a general physician. We always had suspicion about his DM (cardiology) degree and acted on it," he said. "We have sought details related to the doctor from the CMO. We want to know how he was recruited as he served in the civil hospital for months. We are, however, yet to get any record. Only after we have all the details, we will initiate legal action," said Yashpal, a spokesperson for police. Lured with cryptocurrency bait, CA duped of 1.93crore

Lucknow: Cyber fraudsters have conned a chartered accountant (CA) of Rs 1.93 crore by luring him into a cryptocurrency investment scheme. The victim, Shalabh Pandey, a resident of Vijayant Khand, Gomtinagar, told the police that the scam began with a Facebook friendship request from a woman named Bhavika Shetty. SHO Cyber Crime Police Station Brijesh Yadav confirmed that an FIR was registered under section 318 (4), 319(2), and 66D of the IT Act while investigations are underway, including collecting details of the bank accounts involved. According to the FIR filed at the Cyber Crime Police Station, the accused woman claimed she was planning to open a school and an old-age home in Kolkata and initially sought financial and tax consultancy from Pandey. "Over time, the conversation shifted to cryptocurrency investments, and Bhavika portrayed herself as an expert in the field, promising high returns," said the complainant in the FIR. "Influenced by her claims, the CA first invested Rs 50,000 via a WhatsApp-based portal named X-MEX. Soon, the online portfolio linked to the portal began showing profits and bonuses, building trust in the scheme. Encouraged by the gains, he transferred a total of Rs 1.92 crore over multiple transactions to 11 different bank accounts," said the SHO. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Trouble began when Pandey tried to withdraw the alleged profits.
