Aces motivated to ‘ruin' Liberty's ring night after playoff heartbreak
Each of the past two seasons, the Aces opened at home with a pregame championship celebration.
On Saturday, though, they'll experience what it's like to be on the opposing end of a banner-and-ring ceremony.

For Aces coach Becky Hammon, Saturday's celebration of the Liberty will bring 'mixed emotions.'
Hammon spent the first eight years of her playing career with the Liberty and went to three WNBA Finals with the team, but never won.
Last season, the Liberty captured their first championship and eliminated the Aces in the WNBA semifinals in the process.
'I have a lot of respect for this organization, a lot of respect for Joe and Clara [Tsai], the Liberty just in general. They gave me my first chance,' Hammon said Friday after practice. 'So I keep my personal opinions out of it. We're about winning the game. And I thought last year, I thought they were the best team. The best team gets rings.'

Saturday won't be Chelsea Gray's first time trying to play spoiler to a team's ring night.
The Aces' veteran guard opened the 2018 season at Minnesota.

Gray, then with the Sparks, helped Los Angeles put a damper on the Lynx's championship ring night by handing the defending champions a season-opening loss.

'It's kind of a more incentive that the away team always tries to ruin the ring night,' Gray said Friday after practice. 'That's always the key to everything. That's kind of the mantra of the game.'

Leonie Fiebich joined the Liberty for her first practice of the season on Friday.
Whether she'll play in the season opener remains unclear.
Fiebich was listed as 'questionable' on the team's availability report Friday evening, and coach Sandy Brondello said the German wing would be a 'game-time decision.'

'We'll see how she responds tomorrow,' Brondello said. 'But I'm hopeful. It'd be nice to have her.'
If Fiebich is unavailable, Kennedy Burke may be promoted to the starting lineup.

Breanna Stewart, who will add a third WNBA championship ring to her collection Saturday, said she recently brought her award collection to New York from Seattle.
Stewart hasn't established a dedicated spot for her rings, medals and trophies yet. But she has made it clear to her young daughter that her rings aren't toys.
'I don't want those things to hit the ground and then crack or something,' Stewart said. 'That's a conversation that I don't want to have with her.'

But before the game began, two of the biggest stars in their respective industries, shared a moment on the court. Sabrina Ionescu and movie star Jackie Chan greeted each other before the Liberty took on the Valkyries. During the Liberty's game against the Valkyries, the Jumbotron at Barclays Center showed a preview of Jackie Chan's new movie, 'Karate Kid Legends,' as per Myles Ehrlich of Winsidr. Movie co-star Ben Wang was in attendance with Chan, and both were shown on the Jumbotron after the movie trailer, holding up custom Liberty jerseys. The team was short-handed as well with All-Star center Jonquel Jones sidelined due to a hamstring injury. Ionescu was off to a hot start, however, with 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field and 3-of-7 shooting from the three-point line. The Liberty are one of two teams currently undefeated in the WNBA with the other team being last season's runner-up, the Minnesota Lynx. During the earlier matchup between these two teams this week, it was the Liberty's bench depth that helped power the win. Now in her sixth season in the WNBA, Ionescu has developed into one of the game's best point guards. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft, she is coming off her third consecutive All-Star appearance. Through the Liberty's first four games of the season, Ionescu is averaging 13.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists with splits of 38.8 percent shooting from the field, 25 percent shooting from the three-point line and 84.6 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

They were successful on 31.1% of their total shot attempts, including 21.4% of their tries from three. Connecticut also turned the ball over 19 times, which proved to be fatal towards their chances of staying somewhat competitive with their opponents. Only two players scored in double-digits on Connecticut's behalf. Jacy Sheldon was active on the stat sheet with 10 points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals. She shot 4-of-7 from the field, including 1-of-4 from downtown. Tina Charles came next with 10 points and a steal, while Aneesah Morrow provided eight points and three rebounds. The Sun will look to bounce back in their next matchup, being at home. They host the Atlanta Dream on June 6 at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Juan Soto ‘probably trying to do too much' during slow Mets start: David Stearns

Try it free Certainly, no one expected that at the end of May, President of Baseball Operations David Stearns — among others, like Carlos Mendoza — would still be trying to explain Juan Soto's slow start to his Mets career. Advertisement But there was Stearns on Friday, with Soto not looking anything like the hitter he's been for much of his career, doing just that and acknowledging the $765 million slugger hasn't lived up to expectations. 'Do I think he's trying to do too much right now? Yeah, I think he's probably trying to do too much right now,' Stearns said before the Mets opened a series against the Rockies in Queens. 'That is natural for a player who cares.' Putting too much pressure on himself certainly wasn't the case a year ago, when Soto did almost nothing but play well with the Yankees. Soto later picked up a single. Afterwards, he said he wasn't feeling pressure. 'It's more that I want to come through for the team,' Soto said. 'I know I've been struggling and haven't been there for them, but I will be. … It's a matter of time. I don't know when it will come.' Soto also entered Friday hitting just .130 in those spots, sixth worst in the majors. A year ago, he hit .345 — seventh best in the majors — in the same scenarios. 'And you expand [the strike zone]. … It's an unusual stretch for him and I'm sure he feels it, so that can lead to discomfort and pressure.' 'I think there's frustration. I have not sensed a confidence issue.' Regardless of Soto's attitude, his rotten first two months as a Met have gained plenty of attention around the sport. I also understand when a player signs a big contract, if the results aren't there, there are gonna be questions.' I think he's taking pretty good at-bats.' Advertisement But Stearns also noted Soto is 'hitting the ball on the ground more than in the past' and scouts and executives also say this is the most significant change from Soto than in the past. And like just about everyone else associated with the organization, Stearns is waiting for Soto to turn it around. 'It's a very unique position he's in,' Stearns said of Soto's hefty contract and ensuing spotlight. 'I am very confident it will maybe take a bloop or couple bloops or take connecting on one to exhale a little bit. I imagine it's difficult when the results don't come.'
