Dorian Finney-Smith on playing for the Lakers this season
Early this season, the Los Angeles Lakers badly needed a 3-and-D forward with length. It was something they had needed for a few years.
In late December, they finally addressed that need by trading struggling guard D'Angelo Russell and little-used forward Maxwell Lewis to the Brooklyn Nets for forward Dorian Finney-Smith and guard Shake Milton. Finney-Smith immediately made an impact and helped the Lakers transform their identity.
They had been a weak defensive team in October, November and December, but afterward, they had long stretches during which they locked opponents down with regularity.
After the Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs, Finney-Smith quickly reflected on being a member of the team and getting to again play with Luka Doncic.

'Being here has been amazing,' he said in his exit interview. 'Making it to the 3-seed has been fun, Luka coming in February was a big surprise to many, especially me. Happy to be back with my dawg. Just mad right now that our season ended.'
Finney-Smith had been sent by the Dallas Mavericks to the Nets midway through the 2022-23 season in the deal that sent All-Star guard Kyrie Irving to Dallas. Doncic once again created many good looks from 3-point range for Finney-Smith, and the forward ended up shooting 40% from that distance once Doncic made his Lakers debut.
Finney-Smith has a player option for next season that he can either play on or turn down in order to become a free agent this summer. Among their other tasks this summer, Los Angeles needs to retain him one way or another in order to have a real shot at winning the NBA championship next season.

Based on the current rankings, this is the Finals with the smallest teams' media markets in at least the last 40 years. It's not just the media markets where we can see how the Pacers and Thunder are small markets. Take a look at the valuation for each franchise. Both teams are worth under $4 billion. Now, that is still a billion with a 'b', but last year the two teams were worth about $5 billion on average. The fact that we have one small market team in the Finals isn't that unusual. Both of these teams have been in the finals before. What makes this year truly unique is that we have two teams worth so little at the same time. In fact, there hasn't been an NBA Finals' with two teams in the bottom 10 in the league in terms of worth since at least the early 1990s. Small market doesn't mean unexciting. Tyrese Haliburton ridiculously clutch shooting in Game 1 proves that. What makes Haliburton's production so amazing is he was still 24 on February 1 of this year. He's one of 18 players who have suited up for these squads who were under 25 on that date. That's a record since at least the early 1980s These are young and fresh players beyond just Haliburton. Thunder's star Jalen Williams clocks in at a mere 24 years old. His teammate Chet Holmgren is 23. We're looking at squads that could be good for years to come. Dare I say that, by the time it's all done, it may be Bulls, Celtics, Knicks, Lakers… and Pacers or Thunder on the pantheon of iconic NBA teams.

New York Jets Rookie Named Draft-Day Steal After OTAs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Jets may have found something in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. The Jets selected Georgia wideout Arian Smith, who has been the talk of the town at Jets OTAs. Advertisement New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has given high praise to his rookie wideout. "Arian has some juice, don't he?" Glenn said. "He can run and he's bouncy. He's a really good athlete. I thought the first day he went out there and was really focused on making sure that [he] sees through the ball to bring it in." Smith could be the right fit to pair alongside star receiver Garrett Wilson is he continues to impress the coaching staff. Smith's standout trait is his speed, posting a 4.36 40-time at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. Smith wasn't just a football player for the Bulldogs. The former four-star football recruit committed to Georgia as a two-sport athlete, running track and field on top of his responsibility on the gridiron. Advertisement Smith was a first-team All-American selection for track and field in 2021, with his specialty being the 100-meter dash. Smith retired from track and field in 2023, and received a much bigger role in Georgia's offense the following season, leading the team with 817 receiving yards in 2024, while also adding four touchdowns. Smith's performance at OTAs and his physical traits have led to high praise from not just the coaching staff, but also the press. Bleacher Report's Brent Sobleski tabbed Smith as the draft-day steal at wide receiver after OTAs, high praise for a Day-3 pick. "Raw speed is so tantalizing, because it can be weaponized to tilt the field in the oense's favor. Defenses must take stock of a real speedster on every down and consistently defend all three levels." Sobleski wrote. "Smith has that caliber of speed. He needs to show throughout the summer that he can make the plays available to him. If he does, the Jets will have the type of weapon that should play well with an athletic quarterback in Justin Fields since the defense must account for him running at all times."
