Electric BMW 3-Series Will Pack a Supercomputer Called 'Heart of Joy'

Yahoo16-02-2025

The BMW Vision Driving Experience is the latest concept to preview the upcoming Neue Klasse EVs, one of which will be an electric variant of the next-generation 3-series sedan.
The concept's bodywork and interior are an evolution of the , with sharp lighting and a full-width screen on the dashboard beneath the windshield.
The concept features the "Heart of Joy," a so-called "superbrain" that will control the driving dynamics functions in the Neue Klasse vehicles.
A new BMW 3-series is imminent. Previewed by the 2023 Vision Neue Klasse concept, the new iteration of BMW's long-running sports sedan will come in both traditional gas-powered and electric forms, with the latter expected to adopt the i3 moniker. Now, BMW has revealed a new concept, the Vision Driving Experience, to hint at some of the systems that will be found beneath the sheetmetal of the electric Neue Klasse model and which promise to preserve BMW's famed driving dynamics.
BMW insists that the Vision Driving Experience itself is not bound for production, although the body looks like an evolution of the Vision Neue Klasse concept and is not too far off from the spy photos of the next-generation 3-series. There are a few differences, however. The integrated headlight and grille element is thinner than the concept and there's a large opening in the lower front bumper, presumably to cool the batteries.
Despite the similarities, BMW instead calls the concept a "rolling test rig for drivetrain and driving dynamics management technology." The concept houses what BMW calls the "Heart of Joy," an over-the-top nickname for the control unit that handles the drivetrain, braking, charging, regeneration, and steering functions. The Heart of Joy will be found in every electric Neue Klasse model, BMW says, which presumably includes the upcoming iX3 electric SUV as well.
The Heart of Joy is one of four central units in the car's electronics architecture and marks the first time that drivetrain and driving dynamics functions have been combined into a singular unit. Not only does BMW claim that the system will make driving more enjoyable, but the automaker also says it will lead to better efficiency and range.
Developed entirely by BMW, the Heart of Joy works in conjunction with the brand's Dynamic Performance Control software to manage driving functions. The control unit reportedly processes information 10 times faster than the company's previous units, with BMW claiming that the response is nearly immediate, with latencies in the milliseconds.
The integrated braking and energy recuperation control allow drivers to avoid applying the conventional friction brakes in most scenarios, BMW says, instead relying on regeneration. This is claimed to increase efficiency by up to 25 percent. The company also says that stopping and restarting is seamless, regardless of whether the car is in D or B drive modes, using active cruise control, or using the Auto Hold function.
BMW is using the concept to experiment with color-changing wheels to demonstrate how the Heart of Joy system is working, showing green for acceleration, blue for energy recuperation, and orange for friction braking. Although BMW didn't specify how this illumination occurs, the company has experimented in the past with color-changing body panels. The color-shifting i Vision Dee concept used "E Ink," the same technology found on the screens of e-readers, for a chameleon-like effect.
The Heart of Joy will be one of four "superbrains" that will control future BMWs. It will be accompanied by three other computer systems that control things such as automated driving, climate control, vehicle access, and interior and exterior lighting.
BMW also showed photos of the Vision Driving Experience's interior, previewing what to expect from the 3-series EV. A large, unusually shaped hexagonal screen sits in the center of the dashboard. A thin display stretches across the width of the car, providing info such as time and speed. A similar setup was showcased in the Vision Neue Klasse, Vision Neue Klasse X concept, and the Panoramic iDrive system shown at CES 2025.
BMW has confirmed the first Neue Klasse model will start production later this year at the company's plant in Debrecen, Hungary. The new 3-series—which will utilize this Neue Klasse platform and pack the Heart of Joy control unit—should debut sometime in the next several months.

BMW model suspected of starting Jacksonville International Airport fire might have been recalled

Action News Jax is working to find out if the BMW at the center of a massive fire at Jacksonville International Airport in May was part of a nationwide recall. Below is a picture of the burned-out car being removed from the garage on Tuesday. In late 2024, BMW recalled nearly 271,000 of its cars and SUVs due to a fire risk posed by a faulty water pump. 'They're having trouble with the connector, water is getting into it and other liquids. And the water pump on these particular BMWs is driven by an electric motor, so it causes it to short out. And could cause it to catch fire,' Tony Mossuto, owner of Everything Automotive, said. The National Traffic Highway Safety Administration said the recall is for 2012-2018 models like the 3 and 5 series, and the X3 and X5. Action News Jax confirmed with the Jacksonville Aviation Authority that the BMW alleged to have started the fire is an X3. RELATED: 1 month since Jacksonville International Airport parking garage fire, people are still without cars Action News Jax's Madison Foglio called the ATF, JAA, and the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, and asked them what model year the BMW was and if they knew the cause of the fire. No one could answer those questions. Mossouto has been working with cars since 1983. He said that a fire that this issue can cause can have dire consequences. 'If it's an older car, or older model they could have oil leaks and all, it could be a fire that totally takes out the entire car. I mean it can get pretty big,' Mossouto said. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] Again we don't know if that car was recalled or what caused the fire. But Mossouto said that if you suspect anything wrong with your car, to get it checked out immediately. JAA sent Action News Jax this statement about the parking garage reconstruction today: 'JAA is extremely thankful and fortunate to get to this phase, without death or injury, of the significant fire that occurred in JAX's hourly garage on May 16th. Because of the rapid response efforts of JFRD, JSO, and JAA's entire staff, a possible larger tragedy was averted. After extensive shoring was done to stabilize the structure, the last car was removed on June 24th, allowing demolition of the structurally compromised area to start, which will take approximately six weeks.' [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] JAA also told Action News Jax that right now, there are 217 parking spaces unavailable because of the fire. Michael Stewart is the Vice President of External Affairs for the JAA. He said the airport has recently expanded its parking offerings. 'We were able to actually bring on some other parking spaces in our economy lots and expanded valet,' Stewart said. 'We have sufficient parking and we are inviting customers to come back and park at JAA or JAX facilities at the airport because we have about the same capacity as what we had before. We lost almost 500 spaces as a result of closing that section of the hourly garage. So come on back and park at Jacksonville International Airport when you travel!' No word yet on when demolition of the impacted areas of the South Hourly Parking Garage is scheduled to begin. The Electric M3 Will Be Unlike Anything You've Ever Seen Before

The Electric M3 Will Be Unlike Anything You've Ever Seen Before originally appeared on Autoblog. There's a lot to cover here, so let's jump right in. As first spotted by BMW Blog, reliable BMW insider and Bimmer Post user ynguldyn has dropped a bunch of unreleased information concerning the future electric M3, starting with confirmation that the vehicle known by the internal code ZA0 will enter production in March 2027, as was broadly suspected. The post goes on to say that only one version (the sedan) is being produced for the time being, though a wagon is all but certain for whatever version of the M3 comes next. Speaking of sedans, the post says that the electric 3 Series (NA0/NA1) will enter production in July next year with the Iconic Glow front grilles that will eventually give all Bimmers an unmistakable signature, day or night. View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article We should note that the images used in this article depict the Vision Driving Experience, a prototype test bed for BMW's "Heart of Joy" central computer. BMW says this is a one-off that does not inform any future vehicles, though the next generation of Neue Klasse-based M cars will undoubtedly take some styling inspiration from its design. With that out of the way, the next claim (this time from BMW Blog sources) is that the electric M3 will not stay below 700 horsepower, something that had been rumored in order to give vehicles like the G90 M5 and G08 XM some breathing space. They claim that the battery-operated M car will develop between 800 and 900 hp, though the quad-motor system that some speculated would reach the M3 is still likely to be reserved for high-end applications like the aforementioned M5. It should be noted that the Bimmer Post insider says we should "not expect powertrain specs here until just a few months before [the] start of production." It's a lot more difficult to lock down a figure that could be changed by a software update in an EV than to determine how much power an engine will make as EPA certification, dyno testing, and other evaluations are carried out. View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Let's return to the Bimmer Post claims, which sound entirely plausible. Once again, sportier seats will reportedly be available as an option, but this time, they won't be made of carbon fiber. Instead, the new flax fiber technology that BMW announced as production-ready last week will reportedly be used. M-specific trim elements and head-up display are said to be standard, with more flax fiber in areas that would traditionally be made of carbon composite, like the spoilers, mirrors, and grille inserts. 20-inch wheels will be standard, claims the report, with forged 20s and staggered 20-/21-inch wheels optional alongside carbon-ceramic brakes. What does not appear to be an option is a lightweight roof, with the post claiming that a panoramic sunroof will be shared with the regular 3 Series. Perhaps the inevitable Competition version will address this, since BMW has claimed CO2 emissions reductions of up to 40% with flax fiber versus a similarly sized carbon fiber roof. Finally, for the styling anyway, M-specific headlight graphics are expected. We've been saving this for the end because it requires a discussion on its own. According to the leak, the electric 3 Series will be called i3 and the electric M3 will wear the iM3 badge. BMW has already begun dropping the 'i' suffix from the badges of its combustion-powered cars - the M340i will soon be the M350, for example - with officials saying that cars with it being sold in the same showroom as EVs with the letter as a prefix were causing confusion among buyers. Therefore, we understand the move with respect to the next 3 Series. It also makes a certain amount of sense for the M3, especially after BMW applied for the iM3 trademark in Europe twice. I wrote the story breaking the news of the application for CarBuzz back in 2023, but almost immediately after the article blew up, Frank van Meel told Top Gear, "We would never use an i on an M." That seemed pretty conclusive, but with this new leak claiming otherwise, perhaps BMW has decided that differentiation between EVs and combustion cars matters just as much for M cars as for regular Bimmers. We'll report back once we know more. Given this barrage of information now being leaked, we won't have long to wait. These Cars Cost Too Much, According To Our Readers

If you'd never met a car enthusiast before, you might assume their favorite activity would be driving cars, presumably at a race track or up in the mountains where they can really enjoy said cars. The moment you meet one, though, you learn our favorite activity is actually complaining. We'll complain about anything and everything, and it usually doesn't take too long for the conversation to shift to complaining about how expensive cars have gotten. You could definitely make the argument that they're all too expensive, but there are plenty of cars out there, especially used, that still provide a driving experience that's worth every penny. Instead of talking about those cars, though, we asked you on Tuesday what cars you truly believe cost too much, and boy, did y'all have some opinions. Some of the subreddits and a few PR people may not like those opinions, but hey, your answers were your answers. And we certainly aren't going to stand in the way of you voicing your hottest takes. So let's take a look at some of the cars you said are definitely overpriced. Read more: These Are The Cars You'd Buy If They Were $20,000 Cheaper Entry level luxury. You can often find a top trim from other brands that cost the same and is a better car. At the entry level, you're just buying the badge to show people you own a BMW and a bunch of people will think that's better than the best Mazda you can get. Suggested by: engineerthefuture Ford Maverick. When it was released on 2022 the base model was 19,990 that same truck is now 28,145. A 40% Markup (even in this market) is obscene on a new car with minimal changes. Suggested by: Transplant674 If we're talking used cars I'm going to say vintage muscle cars are still off the charts. These were ordinary cars with big engines that were never meant to give the driver any experience other than raw power, but they're priced like some exotic sports cars. They're not Suggested by: Jimboy Junio Honda S2000. Yes it is a very nice ride, but the hype around them has just driven prices to over $30K for cars with 30K+ miles on them. BaT even has three tracking categories for them since they sell so often on the site. They sold over 66K of them in the US so they are not rare. Suggested by: Speedie One Well, it is always the answer: MIATA Seriously, if you want the RF you're starting at $40k, soft top is $32k. And for all the fun that the Miata is, the rest of it is not a great car. It is loud with highway noise. The "brand new updated entertainment system" is already painfully slow. And all sorts of little things that you shouldn't have to experience in a vehicle that expensive. I really wanted to love my long term rental of one but realized that the compromises just weren't worth it to me. Suggested by: cwheels All day, every day, it's the Porsche 993 911 Turbo. Don't get my wrong, the driving experience in these cars is sublime, but not $200k+ for a nice example sublime. They are pretty cars and people love them, but the cult status around them has caused them to sky rocket in price and take them out of reach for most people outside of collectors. I know people who bought theirs 15 years ago and paid $50k for them, now they can quadruple their money yet it's the same car it was then as it is now. Not worth the price of admission anymore unfortunately. Suggested by: Mike BINGO on the mark 4 Supra. Having driven the non-turbo version and having owned 3 Lexus SC300s I would say both are great cars but the Supra is not worth 5-8 times the price because it is not 5-8 times the car. NSX is also a great pick. The early ones were selling for around $40K in 2003-2005. Timing is everything. Suggested by: Tex The Chevrolet Express. It's obviously not meant to be a performance vehicle but still $40,000+ for a design that is virtually unchanged since 1996. Suggested by: Giantsgiants The McLaren F1 cost WAAAAY too much. Sure, it's rare. Yeah, it was the pinnacle of technology when it came out and it's STILL an amazing car. And yes, it's highly desirable. But I need it to come down to abooooouuuut... fifteen grand. Then I think I could talk the wife into putting one in the garage. Suggested by: Stillnotatony New - 1/2 Ton Pickup Trucks: What used to be a working man's swiss army knife of vehicles, has turned into a working man's mortgage payment, bloated with electronics, fake leather, and temperamental transmissions. Used - Any Toyota I find it strange people are so obsessed with reliability, that they pay absurd prices for bland, annoyomous vehicles, and completely negate the cost savings of that predicted reliability.
