Indonesia Mulls China's Offer of Battle-Tested J-10 Fighter Jets

Bloomberg2 days ago

Indonesia said China has offered to sell it J-10 jets, the fighter aircraft that were recently battle-tested in Pakistan's clashes with India over Kashmir.
The government is examining whether the planes widely used by China's air force meet operational requirements and can be integrated into Indonesia's existing systems, Deputy Defense Minister Donny Ermawan Taufanto said during a public discussion in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Russia pummels Kyiv in apparent retaliation for Ukrainian drone assault

'Russia doesn't change its stripes — another massive strike on cities and ordinary life,' President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine wrote on social media. 'They targeted almost all of Ukraine.' Advertisement Russia's Defense Ministry said in a statement that the attack was 'in response to terrorist acts' by Ukraine, in an apparent reference to its strikes on the Russian bomber bases last weekend. On Wednesday, President Vladimir Putin of Russia told President Trump that Russia would retaliate for these strikes, Trump said, further dimming hopes for a cease-fire that were already faint. The Ukrainian attack, which involved smuggling drones deep into the Russian heartland and launching them from semitrucks, destroyed or damaged at least a dozen aircraft, including many of Moscow's nuclear-capable strategic bombers. Advertisement 'They attacked pretty harshly,' Trump said Thursday about the Ukrainian assault. 'They went deep into Russia.' Combined with a renewed ground offensive in the east, Friday's attack was part of an intensifying Russian campaign to bombard Ukrainian cities with swarms of drones and missiles to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses. Overall, Russia has launched more than 1,000 drones per week at military and civilian targets in Ukraine in recent months, Ukrainian authorities have said. Trump compared Russia and Ukraine to two fighting children who needed to work out their differences before their war could end. 'Sometimes you're better off letting them fight for a while and then pulling them apart,' Trump said in the Oval Office as Germany's chancellor, Friedrich Merz, urged him to leverage the power of the United States to end the conflict. Trump avoided answering a question about whether he was willing to increase pressure on Russia. The Kremlin has repeatedly resisted his calls for an unconditional cease-fire. In Friday's strike by Russia, Ukrainian fighter jets, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare, unmanned systems units, and mobile fire groups took out 406 of the 452 air attack vehicles, with strikes reported in 13 locations, according to the air force. These figures could not be independently verified. Multiple fires were reported across Kyiv, including at a 16-story apartment block. Another fire near the city center covered an area of more than 5,000 square feet. Three people died in Kyiv, all of them rescuers who had rushed to extinguish the fires, Ukrainian authorities said. Kyiv's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, also said that 20 people had been injured in the capital. Klitschko initially said Friday morning that four people had been killed in Kyiv, but later revised the toll to three. Advertisement Parts of western Ukraine that have not come under frequent attack were also targeted. The city of Ternopil, which is hundreds of miles from the front, came under heavy assault, local authorities said, with at least 11 people injured, including six emergency workers. In Lutsk, in northwestern Ukraine, Russia struck a high-rise apartment building and other locations, killing one person and injuring at least 27 more, Ukrainian emergency services said. The Russian military said it had struck various military targets Friday, though this could not be independently verified. Throughout the war, Russia has repeatedly targeted urban areas, increasing the risk of civilian casualties. The Ukrainian military did not disclose any information about casualties among its ranks or damage to its facilities.

Buyer With Ties to Chinese Communist Party Got V.I.P. Treatment at Trump Crypto Dinner

The Trump White House has repeatedly sounded an alarm about visitors with ties to China's Communist Party coming to the United States, arguing that they are a potential security threat. But the administration appears to have literally left the door open to a member of a Chinese government group when it went along with a plan to give the biggest purchasers of President Trump's digital currency access to the president and the White House. Mr. Trump launched a so-called memecoin, a type of cryptocurrency, just days before his inauguration. To bolster sales, the president's business partners created a contest in April, offering the coin's top buyers a tour of the White House and a private dinner with Mr. Trump at his Virginia golf club. One of those buyers was He Tianying, who is a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, according to government documents in China examined by The New York Times. That government group, referred to as the C.P.P.C.C., is an advisory body that seeks to broaden the Communist Party's influence and solicit support from influential people in Chinese society. Mr. He, who was registered at the Trump event as a resident of Hong Kong, advises the Chinese government through his role as a delegate of the Fangshan C.P.P.C.C., a district of Beijing. He is listed as a member of the organization's science and technology committee. The Times could find no indication that Mr. He is a member of the Communist Party, and the government body he serves on is fairly low level. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Tesla's EV Deliveries Are Seen Falling as Demand Erodes Sharply

Wall Street is reining in expectations for Tesla Inc. deliveries as the Elon Musk-run automaker struggles with waning consumer demand and the threat of reduced US federal incentives for electric vehicles. Analysts at Oppenheimer on Friday cut their estimates for handovers this year and next, citing weak data out of China and Europe. With expectations for 1.63 million deliveries in 2025, the securities firm is projecting what would be the second straight annual decline. That's below the 1.7 million average of analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg.
