3 coaches in 3 seasons equals the same reward with Utah State back in March Madness

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Reaching March Madness is hard any season. Going back-to-back takes some doing, especially with the transfer portal along with name, image and likeness in the mix.
All of which makes Utah State's latest NCAA Tournament berth especially impressive.
The 10th-seeded Aggies (26-7) are back for the third consecutive March with a first-year coach. This time Jerrod Calhoun is in charge after Danny Sprinkle left for Washington last spring once he guided the Mountain West Conference school to the second round. Ryan Odom took the Aggies to the Big Dance two years ago and last week earned the Atlantic 10 championship at VCU.
'Certainly, college basketball has changed,' Calhoun said Wednesday, thanking athletic director Diana Sabau for the opportunity after going 118-106 in seven seasons with the 2023 Horizon League regular-season title at Youngstown State.
'You have to have a very, very good plan. You have to have partnership. I was very fortunate that (Sabau) took a gamble on a coach that really had no ties to the West Coast. … If you can relate to the players, you can be there for them, you can hear their stories and have a system that works inside that league. Every job is different. You have to have a strategic plan."
The Aggies are just the second program to reach three consecutive NCAA Tournaments with three different coaches. Southern Illinois achieved the feat from 2003-05 with Bruce Weber, Matt Painter and Chris Lowery on the sidelines, respectively.
Granted, Calhoun inherited a solid nucleus with five returnees including a backcourt featuring fifth-year senior Ian Martinez (16.8 points per game) and sophomore Mason Falslev (14.9 points, 6.2 rebounds).
The coach also hit the portal and recruiting trail adding nine players including graduate guard Dexter Akanno (8.3 points) and 6-foot-11 Aubin Gateretse.
Six players average at least six points per contest for the Aggies, who also have a good mix of youth that sets up nicely for next season. What's clear is that change has never hurt chemistry.
'One thing that's been similar with all three teams is the way we get along on and off the court,' said Falslev, whose 2.33 steals per game rank 13th nationally.
'I think we have the same type of bond this year. We all get along. We all want the best for each other. We all want each other to succeed. So I think that's the common denominator."
That collective effort has helped Utah State enter Thursday night's Midwest Region opener against No. 7 seed UCLA (22-10) tied for 29th nationally at 80.9 points per game. The Aggies are 14th nationally in shooting at nearly 49% per outing, while their scoring margin of nearly 11 points is tied for 20th.
USU is among three Mountain West schools in this year's tournament, showing depth. Having broken a nine-game tournament drought dating to 2001 last spring, the Aggies' objective is starting strong again.
For his part Calhoun sounds eager to create sideline stability beyond March. He gushed about Utah State recently raising $1 million for NIL in one night, a sign of commitment to the program.
Calhoun aims to reward that with a victory against one of college basketball's blue bloods and send out his veterans at the highest level.
'I've been a head coach for 13 years,' he said. "You put a lot of time, a lot of sacrifice on your family, a lot of recruiting trips, a lot of individual workouts, skilled instruction, a lot of meetings. There is a ton that goes into college basketball, especially with the portal and NIL.
'We've got three seniors. This is their last go. I want to do everything I can in my power to put them into a good position to go make plays and be confident. We owe it to those guys.'

Harris, Acuña and Ozuna provide boost to lineup and give Braves hope they can still save season

Associated Press ATLANTA (AP) — With Michael Harris II finding his power stroke, Ronald Acuña Jr. hitting .375 after missing almost a full season and Marcel Ozuna fighting his way through a hip issue, the Atlanta Braves are hoping their offensive recovery has not come too late. Harris has hit homers in back-to-back games for the Braves, who have won three of their last four games at a crucial stretch of the season. Harris hit a three-run homer to tie the game and Ozuna added another three-run shot to give the Braves the lead in their 12-4 win over Colorado on Friday night. It was Ozuna's 11th homer, despite the sore hip. The Braves trailed 4-1 before recovering to beat the lowly Rockies after winning two of three games at Milwaukee — their first series win since May 16-18. The Braves (30-38) still have much ground to make up in the NL East. Scoring six or more runs in each of their most recent three wins has given manager Brian Snitker renewed reason for optimism. The Braves, who won the 2021 World Series, need a dramatic recovery to extend their streak of seven consecutive postseason appearances. 'These are big games, all of them,' Snitker said after Friday night's win before acknowledging it won't be easy to save the season after falling 10 games below .500, most recently at 28-38. The Braves are 14 games behind the first-place New York Mets and tied for third in the East with Washington. 'As we know, we've done it before (but) not this far back,' Snitker said. Acuña doubled on the first pitch from German Marquez and scored on Olson's sacrifice fly. Acuña added singles in the third and fifth innings for his third consecutive three-hit game. When asked what Acuña brings to the lineup, Harris said 'Energy. He's an MVP. You know the talent is there. He brings a lot of energy at the (leadoff) spot.' Acuña stole second base in the fifth on his first attempt since returning on May 23 after missing almost a full season following surgery on his left knee. 'I was wondering if he was on a restriction,' said Harris of Acuña's wait for his first steal. 'Obviously, the speed is still there.' It was Acuña's first stolen base since May 25, 2024 at Pittsburgh, a span of 385 days. It was an encouraging sign of confidence in the surgically repaired knee for Acuña, who was NL MVP in 2023 when he hit 41 homers and had 73 steals. 'He's hit the ground running since he's been back, that's for sure,' Snitker said. 'His at-bats have been not like he missed the significant amount of time he missed.' Harris, hitting only .238, has driven in 41 runs. He has hit three of his six homers in the last six games. 'Obviously, I want my average to be up a good amount, but I feel I've been able to get some key RBIs through the season,' Harris said. The Braves have been below .500 most of the season and their recent stretch of six straight series losses led to speculation they might be sellers instead of buyers at the trade deadline. 'I don't think we really think about that much,' Harris said. '... It's just worrying about who's here now.' ___ AP MLB: recommended

Narváez walk-off single in 10th helps Red Sox earn 3rd straight win over Yankees, 2-1 in 10 innings

Associated Press BOSTON (AP) — Carlos Narvaez hit a walk-off RBI single off the wall in the 10th inning after Aaron Judge hit a tying solo home run in the ninth and the Boston Red Sox rallied to beat the New York Yankees 2-1 on Friday night. Ceddanne Rafaela added an RBI. Boston has now won its last three against its longtime rivals. The loss snaps a three-game overall win streak for New York, which came in off a sweep of Kansas City last week. Jarren Duran grounded out to open the 10th, moving automatic runner David Hamilton to third. Reliever Tim Hill (3-2) then walked Rafael Devers. After a strikeout, Narváez came to the plate. Garrett Whitlock (5-0) pitched a scoreless 10th to salvage a master performance by Boston starter Garrett Crochet, who pitched a career-high 8 1/3 innings, yielding four hits and striking out seven. Crochet gave up just three of those hits over eight innings, striking out Judge each of the first three times he faced him. His luck ran out the fourth time when Judge unloaded on Crochet's seventh pitch of the at-bat — a 99.6 mph fastball — belting it 443 feet over the Green Monster. Crochet was replaced by Aroldis Chapman, who got the final two outs of the inning. Yankees starter Ryan Yarbrough gave up four hits over 4 2/3 innings, walked three and struck out three. Key moment With two outs in the 10th , Yankees manager Aaron Boone challenged a foul ball call on a grounder by DJ LaMahieu down the first baseline. A review determined it to be foul. Boone came out to argue and was ejected. Key stats Judge is now 1 for 7 with six strikeouts against Crochet this season. Up Next LHP Carlos Rodon (8-4, 2.87 ERA) took the loss in the finale of last week's series against the Red Sox. RHP Hunter Dobbins (3-1, 4.20) has won each of his last three starts. ___ AP MLB: recommended

Texas A&M becomes first No. 1 seed to miss Super Regionals in NCAA softball tournament

Editor's note: As the NCAA softball tournament moves on to the super regionals, here are the winners and losers of the regional weekend of action. In a day full of emotional whiplash, Sunday's regionals ended in desolation at College Station, Texas. Advertisement It started in Game 1 of Sunday's regional round, a must-win for No. 1 seed Texas A&M. After the Aggies fell behind 6-0 to unseedeed Liberty, they stormed back to ultimately pull out a 14-11 win in eight innings and force a winner-take-all game against the Lady Flames. The Aggies then jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the nightcap before Liberty right fielder Rachel Roupe homered to open the scoring for Liberty. Texas A&M gave up another five runs to go down 6-3, before ultimately losing 6-5 following a spirited comeback attempt. "I'm just trying to process everything," Roupe said about the Flames' historic win on ESPN2 after the game. " ... Weight lifted off your shoulder. We were battling all day long. It took us, I don't know, many hours? Eight hours? Whatever we needed to do to get it done, we did it." Advertisement Kaylan Yoder was key for Liberty, coming in and tossing 1⅔ innings after ace Elena Escobar was run in the sixth. The five-run sixth was ultimately the difference for the Lady Flames, and the Aggies were unable to overcome the late onslaught. It's an inauspicious loss for the Aggies, who became the first No. 1 overall seed to miss the Super Regional round. Texas A&M, of course, got that No. 1 seed when the SEC Championship game against Oklahoma was cancelled, giving the Aggies the top seed in the NCAA tournament and Oklahoma getting No. 2. WHO'S IN SUPER REGIONALS? Updated bracket, schedule for NCAA softball tournament Has a No. 1 seed ever missed NCAA softball Super Regionals? Texas A&M's loss Sunday made the Aggies the first No. 1 seed to ever fail to advance out of the regional round of the tournament. Advertisement In fact, according to the ESPN broadcast, Texas A&M was the only the second No. 1 seed to even lose a game in the NCAA Division I softball tournament. As the No. 1 seed in 2012, California lost a game in regionals to Arkansas then came back to capture two must-win games against the Razorbacks to advance. The Aggies have not made the Women's College World Series since 2017, while Liberty's win Sunday propelled the Lady Flames to the Super Regional round for the first time in program history. Texas A&M went 47-10 in the regular season and 16-7 in the SEC. It has not won the Women's College World Series since the current format was introduced in 2005 after winning two national championships in 1983 and 1987.
