Revenge killings: Vizag man gets death penalty for killing six of a family
Visakhapatnam: The IV additional district and sessions court in Visakhapatnam on Friday sentenced 50-year-old Battina Appalaraju to death for killing six members of a family, including two children, in a revenge killing in April 2021.
The incident took place at Yathapeta locality in V Juttada village under Pendurthi police station limits in Vizag city. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict.
Six members of the family, including three women and two children, were hacked to death by their neighbour Battina Appalaraju with a hunting scythe over a personal feud in the early hours of April 15, 2021.
Appalaraju and Bamidi Vijay Kiran, neighbours, had a longstanding enmity.
Appalaraju decided to eliminate Vijay Kiran and his family.
The victims were Vijay Kiran's father Bamidi Ramana (61), Kiran's wife Bamidi Usha Rani (31), Kiran's son B Uday Nandan (3), Kiran's daughter B Lishitha (six months), Allu Ramadevi (47), mother of Usha Rani, and Nakettlu Aruna (46), a relative of Usha Rani. Vijay Kiran and his elder son escaped as they were not present at the location during the murders.
Appalaraju's daughter Parvathi had a close relationship with Vijay Kiran, which Appalaraju perceived as an insult.
He lodged a case against Vijay Kiran at Pendurthi police station in 2018. Since then, Appalaraju and his brother developed a grudge against Vijay Kiran's family.
Later, Vijay Kiran and his family moved to Vijayawada in search of livelihood. In April 2021, they returned to V Juttada as Vijay Kiran's uncle's son Sai's marriage was fixed for May 13, 2021.
Knowing that Vijay Kiran's family had returned, Appalaraju, who had been waiting to take revenge, hacked six family members to death in the early hours on April 15 while they were asleep.
Additional public prosecutor grade-I, Metta Khajana Rao said that judge M Nageswara Rao of the IV additional district and sessions court awarded capital punishment to Appalaraju after convicting him under IPC Section 302 for murder and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000.

Tirupati: A cultural programme scheduled at Tirumala's Asthana Mandapam on Friday descended into confusion and protest, as more than 2,000 artistes, many of whom had paid to participate, arrived expecting to perform, only to find entry restricted to a fraction of them. The court, while taking note of the irregularities, directed the TTD to allow performances by 1,200 artistes, 600 each on June 27 and 28, and ordered a vigilance inquiry to be completed within four weeks. Despite the clear order, the turnout on Friday far exceeded expectations. With only 600 artistes permitted for the day, hundreds of artistes were left outside the venue, sparking protests and allegations of mismanagement and betrayal. Protesters demanded that all artistes who had paid be allowed to perform as promised. TTD vigilance and local police rushed to manage the situation and held discussions with the agitating crowd. Following instructions from senior officials, the remaining artistes were eventually allowed to perform, temporarily easing the tensions. The organiser's manager has since been taken into custody for questioning, and TTD vigilance officials have initiated a formal investigation into the incident, based on complaints lodged by affected artistes.

Madras High Court denies anticipatory bail to MLA Jagan in teen abduction case
CHENNAI: Finding prima facie materials to establish his role in the abduction of a boy from Tiruvallur, the Madras High Court on Friday refused to grant anticipatory bail to KV Kuppam MLA and leader of Puratchi Bharatham party 'Poovai' M Jagan Moorthy. Justice G Jayachandran said the court has arrived at an irresistible conclusion that for a fair investigation and fearless trial, the petitioner needs to be secured and subjected to custodial interrogation. The teenager was allegedly abducted as his brother had married a girl outside his caste from an affluent family in Theni. 'The call details collected show that the petitioner was in touch with ADGP HM Jayaram and other persons. These materials prima facie are sufficient to hold that the petitioner is a party to the alleged conspiracy,' the judge said in the order. The matter pertains to the abduction of the teenager from his house in Tiruvalankadu police limits on June 7, 2025, by five unidentified persons in the marriage involving his brother. The kidnapped boy was later let go near the Perumbakkam bus stand. Preliminary probe brought to the fore the alleged involvement of Moorthy and HM Jayaram, an ADGP-rank IPS officer. On Friday, Additional Advocate General (AAG) J Ravindran assisted by Additional Public Prosecutor R Muniapparaj, representing the CB-CID, submitted that the investigating agency has collected electronic evidence, call records, photographs, CCTV footage and recovered Rs 7.86 lakh from the girl's father Vanaraja that point to the MLA's role in the case.

'Irrefutable' evidence available against SAD leader Majithia in drugs case: Former Punjab DGP Chattopadhyaya
ANI 28 Jun 2025, 05:01 GMT+10 Chandigarh [India], June 28 (ANI): Former Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Siddharth Chattopadhyaya on Friday said that irrefutable evidence is present against Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia linking him to drug traffickers. Chattopadhyaya alleged that crucial evidence against Majithia has existed since 2012. The SAD leader is currently facing an investigation into the drug case. 'These are young and new officers who have shown the courage to work. I had gone there to guide them that the evidence has been in the file since 2012. So, use it and present it before the court. This is irrefutable and on-record evidence, legally acceptable in court as evidence. But with his influence, he had suppressed it,' former DGP told ANI. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia was sent to seven days of police custody by a Mohali court on Thursday in connection with a money laundering case linked to drugs. He will be produced before the court again on July 2. Speaking to ANI, the Public Prosecutor Advocate Ferry Sofat said, 'Bikram Singh Majithia's income of Rs 540 crore remains undisclosed, and he could not mention any details about it...'He informed the court that there were large and unexplained cash deposits made by Saraya Industries, a company operated by Majithia's family since the 1950s.' The court was also informed that Majithia had allegedly threatened the investigating officers during his arrest, and the incident was captured on video. (ANI)
