Agri-food body set up to help sector communicate ‘more effectively'

With a core aim to 'educate and inform public using evidence-based facts, share compelling stories, and foster deeper engagement,' the body is currently recruiting an executive director.
'The overarching goal is to maintain Irish agriculture's licence to operate by building greater public understanding, trust, and support for the sector,' Bord Bia said when asked a series of questions from the Farming Independent about the new body.
It said food, and the people who produce it, play an irreplaceable role in our health, wellbeing, identity and culture.
'Yet knowledge, understanding and appreciation of Irish farming and food production is in decline. To address this, Ireland's agri-food industry has come together to help reconnect Irish society with Irish agriculture.

However, Bord Bia did not respond to queries of what the body's budget would be, or what the executive director will be paid.
It said: 'A business entity has been formed, though the long-term financial structure is still being finalised.'
The target audience for the initiative is outside of the agriculture community.
Bord Bia said a small team, with strong project management, public relations and communications expertise, will manage the initiative, leveraging appropriate agencies and service providers to deliver an annual programme of work.
Activity will span three pillars: communications, advocacy development and education.
Current industry partners in the initiative include the Irish Farmers' Association (IFA), the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association (ICMSA), the Irish Co-operative Organisation Society (ICOS), the National Dairy Council (NDC), Meat Industry Ireland members, Dairy Industry Ireland members, Bord Bia, and Agri Aware.
The body's interim board members are: Tom Moran, Chair; Damian McDonald, IFA; John Enright, ICMSA; Emma Walls, National Dairy Council; Karina Pierce, UCD; Pat Sheehan, Dairy Industry Ireland & North Cork Creameries; Niall Browne, Dawn Meats; Kevin Cahill, ABP and Jim O'Toole, Bord Bia.
There are ongoing discussions to include horticulture, cereals, and secondary processors also, and wider sector engagement will be explored.
The interim board is tasked with setting strategic objectives, shaping the work programme, and establishing key performance indicators and will be replaced by a formal board in 2026.
Its former iteration, Meat and Dairy Facts, was set up in 2019, last posting news on its website in February 2022.

Only 5% of business leaders say they have skills to fully harness potential of AI and other digital innovation, according to new research by the Irish Management Institute. While 42% of leaders admitted to lacking knowledge and expertise to strengthen cyber controls. The 'IMI Leadership Barometer' surveyed 459 senior leaders in Ireland from private, public and semi-state organisations. The study found that these capabilities will be need to be addressed as a matter of priority, as cyber threats accelerate and evolve in the AI era. One in three business leaders who answered the survey say they are confident in leading their organisation through a period of elevated economic volatility and disruption. 8% said they're not confident about their capacity to successfully navigate an environment of elevated economic and geopolitical volatility. The study also found that 45% of decision makers reported gaps in financial leadership capabilities, including managing investments and maximising growth. Commenting on the release of the IMI Barometer, Shane O'Sullivan, CEO of the IMI described the Leadership Barometer as providing "a timely insight into the capabilities of Irish business leaders to respond to these challenges and seize new opportunities for growth." "Despite the complexity of this environment, it's clear from our findings that many leaders are navigating this evolving landscape with resilience and a measured degree of confidence," said Mr O'Sullivan. However he acknowleged the weaknesses in current leadership capabilities in the findings including areas such as AI and financial skills, "Addressing these gaps will be crucial to ensuring leaders are equipped with the key capabilities to navigate the change ahead and drive the future growth and competitiveness of business in Ireland," he said

The Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers' Association (ICMSA) has said that farmers will feel frustrated and disrespected by the 'sneaky' 10c/kg cut in beef quotes late last week. Chairperson of ICMSA's Livestock Committee, Michael O'Connell said the price drop was 'slyly introduced' by procurement staff introducing new base prices from mid-week onwards. 'It's strikingly similar to last year; at the first sign of uncertainty in the trade, factories pull prices by 10c/kg. 'Why does this 'uncertainty' always manifest itself in the form of price cut to the farmer primary-producer?' he added. The ICMSA stated that the only certainty is that beef production is down globally. Noting the record beef prices since the turn of the year, O'Connell pointed out that set against the costs of production and value of store cattle, these price increases were needed. He said that returns for beef farmers in recent years had been very marginal and farmer hopes had been high that this year might see prices provide a 'buffer' against that trend. 'We had hoped that this year would see the kind of beef prices that the market indicated and that long-suffering farmers deserved. But, as usual, factories have 'thrown the toys out of the pram' in an attempt to regain control over the trade with this farcical price cut.,' O'Connell continued. 'When we look at the prices paid to beef farmers this spring, it is perfectly obvious that factories have had the capacity to pay well for cattle when there is a demand. '…In 2019, at the time of the beef protests at factory gates around the country, prices were at an all-time low of €3.40/kg for steers and heifers. Today, we [have] seen base prices of €7.60-7.70 for steers and heifers – more than double. What has changed in this period? 'The answer is the mindset of Irish farmers as well as the cattle herd size across Europe and internationally,' he said. The ICMSA chair said that the numbers of suckler cows has reduced dramatically, while the age demographic of Irish farmers has steadily increased. He stated that farmers are now testing the marketplace by selling factory fit cattle in marts and leaving factory agents and procurement staff to battle it out ringside. Alongside that trend, huge pressure has been put on factories by the increasing number of calves, weanlings and beef cattle being exported into Europe and further afield, according to the ICMSA. 'For the past two or three years, cull cows have insulated and propped up factory throughput. But the latest throughput figures have shown that the cull cow kill has peaked with current figures falling below last year's,' O'Connell continued. 'Young bulls are also falling steadily, but this has been an ongoing trend due to the blatant 'blackguarding' of young bull finishers over the last number of years. 'That group who finished young bulls are falling rapidly at exactly the same time as we see huge developments in live exports. 'And this is where the factories' 'mind games' have caught up with them; they've spent so much time deliberately manoeuvring to keep prices low with reduced kill plans, short weeks and instilling uncertainty in demand that no-one can, or should, believe them.' Reduced kills The ICMSA Livestock chairperson said that reduced kill plans were nothing more than a price controlling measure. 'It creates a sense of panic among farmers to try offload cattle before a further price drop but realistically, it is a method of 'flushing out' the last of the shed cattle,' he said. 'Factories will naturally kill their own feedlot cattle at the expense of farmers' cattle. Most factories are reduced to three to four days per week suggesting that they are trying to stretch out a limited availability of slaughter-fit cattle – and that analysis is supported by the reduction in cow and young bull kill. 'I would urge farmers to sensibly consider their options before giving in to factories and particularly where we're talking cattle off grass. It is very early to kill cattle from grass, with or without feed. 'Cattle may look fleshy and fit, but it is amazing the thrive the cattle would do in the next month, and I believe farmers would be disappointed with returns on these cattle.' The ICMSA is urging farmers, particularly with grass cattle, to consider the mart, as the 'dying power' would not be in these cattle yet. The farm organisation has said that the mart trade this week is ahead of factory trade with beef Hereford and Angus cattle making up to €4.10/kg liveweight. 'No matter what way you add it up, a base price of €7.50 with a breed bonus of 20c and taking your chance on the 'mysterious' grid is not going to come up to €4.10/kg liveweight in the mart,' O'Connell explained. 'Continental steers and heifers are commanding up to €4.30 and up to €4.50/kg in cases of better-quality cattle. I'd really urge those farmers with cattle off grass to consider the marts.'

Agri Aware is delighted to announce that its Open Farm event is coming to two counties in June 2025, one on Saturday, June 14 and another on Sunday, June 15. Open Farm is Agri Aware's flagship event in educating the general public on Irish agriculture and food production by opening up the gates of family-run Irish farms. This free immersive farming experience allows visitors of all ages and backgrounds to connect with the land, animals, and producers who play a vital role in the farm-to-fork process. Open Farm is returning to Co. Kildare once again in 2025 after its success in 2024, with this year's event taking place on Joe and Kevin Doran's dairy farm in Donadea. The Dorans milk a herd of pedigree Holstein Friesian cows and are liquid milk suppliers – which provides the opportunity to showcase consumers exactly where the milk they purchase and consume in the supermarket originates from. The Kildare Open Farm event is taking place on Saturday, June 14. Kevin Doran said that the opportunity to host the Agri Aware Open Farm Day was one of pride for him and his family. He said: 'When I was first approached about hosting Open Farm, I immediately said yes. 'We are passionate as a family in what we do here in terms of producing a sustainable top-quality product with, first and foremost, the welfare of our animals being the top priority. 'To be able to showcase this to both primary school students and the general public as part of Agri Aware's Open Farm is one of excitement for us as a family that we are looking forward to.' The second Open Farm event is taking place for the first time in Co. Galway on the farm of Aonghusa Fahy and family in Ardrahan. Aonghusa operates a suckler-to-beef enterprise, bringing all cattle to finish on a grass-based system. The west of Ireland is synonymous for suckler beef production and Aonghusa is a top example of a farmer producing top-quality livestock whilst implementing technology and practices that are not only making his farm more efficient and profitable but, as importantly, more sustainable. From blooming hedgerows to eye-catching stone walls, the Fahys' farm typifies suckler farming in the west of Ireland and provides an excellent opportunity to showcase to the general public how top-quality beef is produced off a grass-based system. Speaking about hosting the inaugural Open Farm event in Co. Galway this year, Aonghusa said: 'As generations pass, the connection between food and its origins is increasingly being lost, even in rural communities. 'We take immense pride in what we do, from the care we give our animals to the quality of food we produce. 'Through Open Farm, we want to share our story and show the public how we're farming sustainably for the future.' The Co. Galway Open Farm event is taking place on Sunday, June 15. Both events will run from 10:30a.m. to 5:00p.m. All are welcome!
