China hits solid-state battery milestone with Gotion's 0.2 GWh pilot line for safer EVs
Gotion, one of the world's largest electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturers, has officially entered the all-solid-state battery race with the launch of its first experimental production line aimed to test and refine next-generation battery technologies.
Unveiled during Gotion High-tech's 13th tech conference on May 17, the facility reportedly represents a major milestone in the shift toward safer, more efficient battery technologies that could define the future of electric mobility.
Designed with a capacity of 0.2 gigawatt-hours (GWh), the newly built pilot line will produce Gotion's all-solid-state Gemstone battery cells, which are already undergoing real-world road testing in EVs and have shown promising results.
The batteries deliver approximately 40 percent higher energy density compared to conventional lithium ternary cells, offering 350 watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg) or 800 watt-hours per liter (Wh/L). This, according to the Chinese company, makes them a promising alternative for EVs.
Pan Ruijun, Gemstone project research and development head, revealed that the entire production setup uses domestically manufactured equipment. He emphasized that the batteries have already been installed in vehicles and tested on the road.
This, according to Ruijun, not only reduces the dependency on foreign suppliers, but also underscores China's accelerating leadership in battery innovation. He further pointed out that after a full year of performance validation, individual Gemstone cells have achieved a 150 percent increase in capacity, though exact figures were not disclosed.
Gotion, in which Volkswagen holds a 24.45 percent interest, also highlighted that the batteries passed rigorous tests including pin-prick, hot-box, overcharge, and crush stimulations.
The outcomes reinforced their promise as a safer alternative to traditional lithium-ion (Li-ion) cells, which are prone to overheating and thermal runaway. "This means that the human imagination of this ultimate battery is finally within reach," Ruijun stated.
While no official mass production date was provided at this year's conference, the EV battery giant previously stated that small-scale production and vehicle integration could begin in 2027, with full-scale manufacturing expected by 2030.
That timeline aligns with similar goals announced by major competitors. CATL and BYD, two other leading Chinese battery makers, have also outlined plans for limited deployment of solid-state batteries by 2027.
However, despite growing industry excitement, significant hurdles remain for the commercial rollout of the solid-state technology. The company revealed that these include scaling up manufacturing, ensuring long-term material stability, and driving down production costs.
Meanwhile, the Chinese government recently introduced stricter safety standards for EV batteries, set to take effect on 1 July next year, that aim to further improve cell safety.
Yet, Gotion's transition to pilot-scale production serves as a strong indication that the solid-state battery industry is progressing beyond theoretical development and entering the early stages of practical implementation.
With a 3.5 percent share of the global EV battery market as of Q1 2025, ranking it sixth worldwide according to SNE Research, the company is now positioning itself at the forefront of the solid-state revolution. If it meets its projected goals, the Gemstone line could play a central role in reshaping battery architecture and accelerating the transition to cleaner transportation.

SPEC Resumes Global Collaboration with Companies on U.S. BIS Entity List
GAINESVILLE, Va., June 04, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Standard Performance Evaluation Corp. (SPEC), the trusted leader in computing benchmarks, announced today that SPEC International Standards Group (ISG) successfully advocated that the United States clarify export policies to allow companies on the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) Entity List to participate in creating standards. SPEC ISG invites the return of member companies excluded from collaborating due to policy reasons, bringing together the strength of industry, academia, and research from all over the world to cooperate on future computing energy efficiency standards. A few years ago, in order to ensure the safe application of 5G technology, the US government stipulated that US agencies should not cooperate with companies on the BIS Entity List. This ban was never intended to restrict the development of global standards. However, due to the overly strict definition of the term 'standard' in the original exemption clause of BIS, the SPEC SERT suite was classified as a restricted technology, which prevented SPEC (an international standards organization with 12 Chinese member companies) from continuing to develop standards with its members on the Entity List. Harmonized standards are best suited to consistent design and regulatory requirements, resulting in significant cost reduction for manufacturers to meet additional benchmark requirements worldwide. SPEC President David Reiner said: 'Restricting companies on the Entity List from participating in the development of energy efficiency benchmarks risks dividing the global standards process, negating the primary goal of standardization. Through years of hard work, in collaboration with other international organizations, we are pleased to have successfully promoted changes to U.S. policies to remove the unintended restrictions on the development of international standardized benchmarks.' SPEC successfully advocated changes to U.S. rules In 2020, the U.S. Department of Commerce's BIS changed its rules to allow U.S. companies to work in standards organizations to ensure U.S. proposals take full account of international standards that underlie product development and interoperability. While this was an important milestone, the change did not allow SPEC to invite Entity List businesses that were among its former members to re-join, nor to invite other entities on the Entity List to join. In response, SPEC took a series of actions to advocate for the revision of relevant U.S. laws and to promote international technology exchanges and innovation. As part of these efforts, SPEC created the International Standards Group (ISG), specifically designed to comply with the updated BIS requirements and provide a clear separation between SPEC's international standards work and other SPEC projects. As a result of SPEC's successful efforts, BIS improved regulations in late 2022. Under the final regulations, organizations on the BIS Entity List are no longer restricted from licensing, obtaining updates, or participating in the development of the SPEC SERT Suite within the SPEC ISG. These standards development activities related to the implementation, promulgation, or maintenance of the ISO/IEC 21836:2020 standard qualify for the BIS updated standards-related activities exemption. As a result, BIS listed entities are now able to obtain SPEC SERT Suite licenses, updates, and membership status in the SPEC ISG Server Efficiency Committee. The return of excluded members is critical because it will enable SPEC to continue to promote effective global standardized benchmarks and apply them to government energy efficiency regulations. The successful adoption of SPEC SERT suites by government regulations such as China National Institute of Standardization, EU Lot9 Ecodesign, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and the U.S. EPA Energy Star is critical to SPEC's efforts to promote sustainable technology development around the world. For example, computer servers that are ENERGY STAR certified are, on average, about 38% more energy efficient than standard servers. This means that if all computer servers sold in the United States were ENERGY STAR certified, end users would save more than $4 billion per year. The next-generation energy efficiency rating tool is currently under development by the SPEC ISG Server Committee, which includes representatives from Ampere, AMD, Dell, HPE, IBM, Intel, IEIT, Microsoft, Nvidia, and the University of Würzburg. The SERT 3 Suite utilizes the SPECpower Committee's innovative modular architecture, allowing streamlined integration of the latest versions of the Chauffeur benchmark harness and the PTDaemon Interface, which are also utilized by other SPEC benchmarks. This modular design reduces the time required for developing future workloads, adding new architectures, and supporting new power analyzers and temperature sensors. In Guangdong, the rate dropped 8.3% to the government's floor of 373 yuan per MWh. The two coastal powerhouses are heavily dependent on exports, with a combined economy bigger than that of France. The main driver is a collapse in the price of coal — down 30% over the past year — which accounts for more than half of the electricity generated in China. A shift to market-based pricing, particularly for renewables, is also helping to weaken rates. 'Generation costs are cracking,' said David Fishman, a Shanghai-based principal at consultancy The Lantau Group. 'Coal generators, when they're bidding into the system, they're able to entertain lower prices because all of the generation costs are lower.' Just as economic conditions worsen due to the trade war, Chinese industry is finding relief in the government's drive for energy security. That effort has been most successful in power markets. The country is sitting on a glut of coal that's built up over years and leads the world in its rollout of wind and solar. Lower power costs aren't universal though, because of the way the market is structured. The monthly contract declines apply to only about a quarter of electricity sales, Fishman estimated, with some 70% of transactions decided on a yearly basis. Spot or short-term trades account for the rest. Still, a lot of annual deals are at least partially tied to monthly or short-term pricing, which will have expanded the number of beneficiaries, Fishman said. 'I would be surprised if there were a lot of power buyers out there just seething, looking at the prices dropping, thinking how come I didn't see that?' he said. Policy Shifts Recent policy changes have also pressured electricity prices. The sharp drop in Jiangsu's monthly rate was largely due to the start-up of its spot market in June, said Nannan Kou, head of China research at BloombergNEF. Power generators were keen to lock in buyers ahead of the extra competition from spot traders, and lower coal prices allowed them to offer discounts while still eking out a profit, he said. Most regions in China are expected to have at least trial operations for spot markets, which rely on near instantaneous assessments of supply and demand, by the end of the year. Clean energy is a key pillar of China's embrace of market forces. Starting June 1, all renewables generators have to sell their power on the open market, although projects connected to the grid before that date will retain price protections that limit their downside. That creates the incentive to sell electricity without worrying too much about falling prices, said Lantau's Fishman, which could put more pressure on rates and deliver even lower costs to customers. On the Wire Automakers in the US and Europe raised concerns about China's export controls on rare earth metals, as Beijing's move threatens to disrupt global car production. Markets cheered in early May when the US and China agreed in Geneva to lower tariffs and other barriers. But after a few weeks, the shine started to come off that deal, with China accusing the US of violating it with new restrictions and the US saying China failed to honor promises on rare earths. The European Union's trade chief, Maros Sefcovic, said he raised industry-wide concerns over Chinese export restrictions on rare earths and magnets with his counterpart Wang Wentao on Tuesday.
