Rockford Public Library's ‘DigiLibrary' hits the road March 10
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) – A tool to help the Rockford Public Library make its services more accessible to the community will go live Monday, March 10.
Officials say the 'DigiLibrary' will bring lifelong learning opportunities to the city.
'We're going to be going throughout, all over the city, offering computer courses,' ' said RPL Manager of Digital Services Kathi Kresol.
The courses, Kresol added, are part of a bigger goal.
'What we are really bringing is access,' she added. 'We are bringing access to the internet. We can pull up in to a neighborhood [and] set up some tables with some Chromebooks. People can come check their email with us.'
The DigiLibrary is a 2024 Ford Transit van that has been outfitted as a state-of-the art internet hotspot.
'We will also be partnering with several places like the Brooke Road Community Center and the Northwest Community Center and offering computer classes in those neighborhoods,' Kresol said.
In addition to internet access, the DigiLibrary provides access to instruction and access to devices. The service includes three dozen Chromebooks that will be used for classes and for Rockford residents to check out with their library card.
'Access to the internet, access to the devices and access to how to use that all,' Kresol said.
Rockford leaders say the service is a prime example of how things continue to evolve. It also helps put an exclamation point on RPL's role as a 21st century library.
'If someone's having trouble with transportation, the DigiLibrary can come to them,' Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara said in a previous report. 'If a kid is playing at a park, the DigiLibrary can come to them. If there's a senior who may need to learn how to communicate with a younger relative in a different community via their phone and wants to learn how to do FaceTime, they can do it here.'
The van was donated by SiFi Networks, the company that's in the process of building a citywide fiberoptic internet network in Rockford.
'Closing the digital divide is very important to us, and we are thrilled to have partnered with the Rockford Public Library with our donation of the DigiLibrary and its tech to create a sustained impact throughout the city, bringing connectivity to the hands of those that are challenged to connect. We look forward to seeing it around the city providing a vital service,' a company spokesperson said Thursday in an email to Eyewitness News.

Rockford-area homeowners aren't selling. Here's why:
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Winnebago, Boone, and Ogle counties' inventory of available homes reached an all-time low in April, with only 141 properties for sale. 'If we took every house currently on the market, the entire stock would sell out in less than 13days, that's how low inventory has reached,' said Conor Brown, CEO, Northwest Illinois Alliance of Realtors. The realty group said the low inventory could be traced back to the 2008 housing crisis, which reduced new home construction, which plummeted again during the COVID-19 pandemic and has yet to rebound. Among the reasons the agency cited: Current homeowners are locked into historic, pre-pandemic low interest rates on their mortgage loans and are unable or unwilling to move. Or, if they do, they're moving directly into a new home, resulting in no net gain to the number of available homes. According to the Bank of America, 60% of current homeowners and prospective buyers are hesitating about buying a new home, due to high interest rates on a new mortgage. According to FreddieMac, the average nationwide mortgage rate is 6.73%. 'More than eight in 10 homeowners had an interest rate lower than 6% as of the third quarter of 2024,' Brown said. 'More than half had a rate below 4%. Many current homeowners don't want to give up their 3% interest rate for 7%. That's helping keep a tight lid on the market. With homeowners staying put, that means fewer existing homes for sale and fewer choices for homebuyers.' Year-over-year housing sales volume increased for the 7th year in a row, with 311 properties sold in April, 7.2% more than the 290 sold last April. Realtors say 2025 could be the first time in four years that annual sales have risen if current trends continue, with 977 homes sold in the first four months of 2024, compared to the 1,071 sold in the same time frame this year. The average home in Rockford is selling in just 18 days, the agency said. , Rockford ranked as the hottest housing market in the U.S. in January 2025 according to . According to the report, homes in Rockford, which list for a median price of $242,000, spend just 43 days on the market, compared to the national average of 70. The national median listing price of a home is $424,900, according to the report. Last year, Rockford ranked as America's top housing market in a evaluation. In 2013, one-third of Rockford's mortgages were underwater, worth less than what was owed on them. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. ‘Just leave it four lanes': Concern sets in as proposed narrowing of Auburn Street gets pushed to next year
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Many Rockford residents have voiced negative opinions about Auburn Street narrowing to three lanes in Spring 2026. One of them is Kevin Hilby, a long-time Rockfordian. 'It's going to be really hard if you're in a side street trying to turn left or right onto Auburn,' Hilby said. 'Once you have two lanes, it's just going to be bad. It's just a bad idea.' The long-time local thinks the project will cause delays and traffic congestion on Auburn. 'There are so many side streets, driveways, businesses, parking lots, alleys, and we're all going to be in one lane,' said Hilby. The city wants to narrow the lanes to prevent speeding and create a bike path along with a sidewalk for pedestrians. Second Ward Alderman and Auburn High School Teacher Jonathan Logemann hopes the project provides improved safety for students. 'Sometimes I see students walking in the street because some of the sidewalks were in such disrepair, or the sidewalks weren't cleared off,' Logemann explained. The director of public works said the main focus this year is installing a new water main before narrowing the street next spring. 'I would say that no project is universally supported by all, but this was borne out of a pretty extensive public process,' said Public Works Director Scott Sanders. 'We are responding to requests. We heard from the public and the stakeholders.' Hilby hopes the city will change its mind about the project. 'I agree… take the pavement out, put new lines, put new sewer lines, put new everything,' Hilby explained. 'Just leave it four lanes and put the pavement back down the way it was.'
