
Inside incredible panic room hidden behind two bookcases in £3.8 million Scottish castle as it goes on the market
An incredible 19th century castle is on the market for £3.8million - and, alongside an equestrian centre, tennis court and full Scottish pub, comes complete with an ultra-secure 'panic room'.
Ormiston Castle in West Lothian is a mere half an hour drive from Edinburgh, making it the perfect location for a luxury commute into the city.
Set in 15 acres of prime countryside, the newly renovated six-bedroom property offers the potential buyer the chance to purchase their 'very own Balmoral Castle '.
The castle is shown on tonight's episode of Britain's Most Expensive Houses on Channel 4, where viewers are given an inside look at the country's 'super-prime' property market, which is 'the envy of the entire world'.
During the episode, real estate guru Mark Coulter gave journalist Kirsty McLuckie and her friend Pam an exclusive look inside the castle.
But after gushing over the glamorous renovations and period features, there was one bizarre room that left Kirsty and Pam baffled.
During the tour, Mark explained that one of the many bookcases was in fact a cunningly disguised heavy duty door, revealing a secret staircase, which led to another military-grade door.
Taking Kirsty and Pam up the stairs, he revealed that the castle has a secret safe haven - or 'panic room' - if ever any trouble arose.
'This is a panic room,' Mark explained. 'This looks like a bookcase, but actually is a door.
'Behind you is an iPad, and you're completely secure. You can phone the police, and control the whole house.'
A panic room is a secret room where people can go to protect themselves if there's danger in the building. They are sometimes used by celebrities, or those who require an extra layer of security.
However, the two visitors were left baffled and didn't seem completely onboard.
Kirsty admitted: 'I was slightly confused by the stairs and the sort of panic room. It's kind of panic stairs, rather than a panic room.'
She joked: 'I think I prefer the idea of escaping from boring guests, rather than masked intruders!'
They were significantly more impressed when they were taken into the home's 'principle suite' taking up a whole wing of the house and including a living room, dressing room and marble bathroom.
For after dinner entertainment, the property also boasts its own bar and cinema room, which an astonished Kirsty dubbed 'bonkers'.
No details had been spared, with the 15 acres of grounds recently benefitting from £150,000 worth of new planting and high-spec security cameras.
In their rooms, Kirsty and Pam were able to open their wardrobes to see the castle's turrets.
The next morning, they spoke to current owner Juliet Bentley, who had purchased the property back in 2020 for £1.65million.
She explained that though she'd given herself a £350,000 budget for renovations, she had ended up spending a whopping £3.7million.
But, she explained, it was exactly the result she wanted, even installing glass chandeliers from Venice's Murano costing £100,000 apiece.
She previously told The Times: 'I'm making no money out of it. I literally spent £3.7million renovating it. But it's mega inside.
'It's like a brand new house but with all original features, and it operates really smart.
'My bills are actually less than my friend's house down the road because we made it so energy efficient.'
The property was previously listed in November 2023, and came on the market once more in April 2025.
Last week, viewers were taken inside a London penthouse dubbed one of Britain's most expensive properties, on sale for eye-watering £80million.
The five-bedroom apartment is nestled in the heart of Knightsbridge, often described as 'the playground for the rich', and is a stone's throw away from the luxurious department store, Harrods.
The almost 9,500 sq foot property boasts a sauna with a television, two reception rooms, a roof terrace with undisrupted views of Hyde Park and a 10m pool.
Estate agent Josh Marks has been involved in selling multi-million pound properties before, but to date, this is the highest priced property in his work portfolio - and he has six months to find a buyer.
Speaking on the show, Josh said: 'Everyone around the world wants to own a piece of London and the first postcode they come to is Knightsbridge. You've got some of the most expensive properties in the world.'
The complex, called Knightsbridge Apartments, was built 20 years ago by Hong Kong billionaire Samuel Tak Lee who saw the value in London real estate.
But despite all these elegant features and the hefty price, an international buying agent admitted that it is likely this will sit empty most of the time, as a billionaire's second home.

‘Lots of bumps in the road': Keir Starmer faces testing month before one-year milestone
As Keir Starmer approaches his first anniversary in Downing Street, there will be several things he wishes he had done differently. But before he can contemplate that July milestone, he faces a busy month strewn with political bear traps. June has proven a difficult time for successive prime ministers: Theresa May, Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak all had to contend with deeply unhappy parliamentary parties reeling from heavy local and European election losses. While the mood among Labour MPs is nowhere near as mutinous, they too are bruised from a difficult set of local election results in England in May and the surge of Reform UK. 'There is more than the usual amount of grumbling and discontent,' a government source said. One unexpected ray of light was the result of the Holyrood byelection in Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse on Friday. Labour secured a surprise victory, knocking the Scottish National party into second place and restoring some hope in Labour's fortunes ahead of next year's Holyrood elections. One MP said the result was 'humiliating' for the SNP. It is certainly a welcome win for Downing Street as Labour MPs brace for more bad news and a series of contentious debates this month. 'They know that the spending review is going to be really hard,' a government source said. The spending review on 11 June, which will set out multi-year departmental budgets after months of tense negotiations between the Treasury and cabinet ministers, will be a make-or-break moment for Starmer and his chancellor, Rachel Reeves. Downing Street is trying to grasp the nettle by putting plans for capital investment in underserved parts of the country at the centre of the narrative. But government strategists are braced for a wave of discontent once the data tables are published revealing cuts across unprotected departments. The most highly anticipated parliamentary moment is the first Commons vote on the government's welfare measures, including deep cuts to disability benefits. Labour whips are seeking to minimise the size of the rebellion after dozens of MPs signed a letter saying they found the proposals impossible to support. Officials say the vote will take place in the second half of June and have repeatedly denied rumours that it could be delayed to the autumn. Officials have also pencilled in the publication of a number of government strategies and reviews that have the potential to draw backlash. The proposed legislation has opened a bitter divide in the parliamentary Labour party and sparked concerns in Downing Street that arguments over the bill are distracting from the government's core agenda. The Commons will consider amendments to the bill on 13 June and is expected to vote on it again on 20 June. Another difficult moral question due to be considered by MPs this month is whether to decriminalise abortion in England and Wales. Several women in recent years have found themselves in the dock for ending their pregnancies outside the strict legal parameters of the Abortion Act 1967. Two Labour backbenchers are putting forward amendments to the crime and policing bill, which is due to return to the Commons in a fortnight. 'There's lots of little bumps in the road – it's quite an important few weeks,' a Labour source said. The upside for Starmer is that if he succeeds in overcoming this series of hurdles fairly smoothly, the mood in government and the PLP will start to improve before summer recess. If he doesn't, any celebrations to mark his first year in power will be pretty muted.

Cruise Scotland warns government against ‘damaging' levy proposal
The Scottish cruise industry has lashed out at the government's proposals to introduce a cruise ship levy over fears it would deter cruises from visiting its ports. The Scottish Government announced earlier this year that it is considering a proposal to allow local authorities to create a visitor levy on cruise ships docking at its ports. During the consultation, Cruise Scotland, a membership-based marketing organisation that represents key cruise industry players, issued a warning to the Scottish Government that the levy could damage the sector. The organisation expressed its concern in its formal submission to the government consultation on implementing a cruise ship levy, saying that cruises will become discouraged from visiting Scottish ports. 'Scotland must decide whether it wants to attract or deter a sector that delivers over £130m annually to the national economy and sustains jobs in some of the most remote and economically vulnerable communities,' Rob Mason, chair of Cruise Scotland, said. Mr Mason also claimed that if the levy was mishandled, it could result in job losses, cause a slump in local business growth and disrupt a tourism model that benefits communities. Cruise Scotland said that the government's plans are so far too ambiguous, stating that prolonged uncertainty regarding the levy is 'damaging' as cruise operators cannot plan accordingly. The group also warned against creating devolved powers for individual councils to implement the levy, as it claimed this would create competition between areas and would require port authorities to function as tax collectors. 'We must remember that this is a movable market that does not need to come to Scotland, despite all we have to offer, and neighbouring regions in the North Atlantic and Northern Europe are strongly positioned to benefit from any displacement,' Mr Mason added. While the chair said Cruise Scotland 'fully acknowledges' the need for targeted investment, he called upon the government to be more transparent in its decisions around the levy and asked for 'close collaboration' with the industry. The organisation said it remains engaged in discussions with policymakers. Cruise Scotland says that 1.1 million passengers visited Scottish ports in 2024, contributing over £130 million to local businesses and communities. Kirsty Hutchison, Cruise Scotland's market development manager, said that this number could see a drop if a levy were implemented. 'Introducing a levy could send the wrong signal to cruise operators at a time when Scotland is successfully growing its reputation as a responsible and attractive destination,' Ms Hutchinson said. 'The evidence from other markets suggests that a levy risks reducing visitor numbers, along with the significant revenue and opportunity they bring.' The levy has received support in other areas. The Scottish Greens are in favour of the potential to cut climate emissions, while the Orkney Islands Council said it would welcome the revenue it would generate for the communities. The consultation on the levy has now closed, and responses will be analysed over the summer to inform ministers the next steps they can take.
