Trainer John Sargent aiming to again win Randwick staying feature with Casual Connection

News.com.au23-05-2025

Trainer John Sargent is ready to go back to the future with Casual Connection in the PF Civil Handicap (2400m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
Casual Connection, a resolute stayer who revels on wet tracks, won this race 12 months ago to earn his chance in the Brisbane Cup.
But a firm Eagle Farm track meant Sargent's stayer struggled when only eighth in the Group 2 race, won by the Bjorn Baker -trained Alegron.
Sargent hasn't ruled out giving Casual Connection another crack at a Brisbane Cup but the trainer has heeded the lessons from last year.
'I will only run him in the Brisbane Cup if he gets a wet track,'' Sargent said.
'This horse loves it soft or heavy so Randwick on Saturday will be ideal for him.''
Sargent was also buoyed by the barrier draw which has Casual Connection out in gate 15 but he will come in a few barriers after scratchings as the field size is restricted to 13 starters.
'Casual Connection has drawn the rails barrier his last two starts which doesn't suit him,'' the trainer said.
'He is the type of stayer that needs to get his momentum going and make a long, sustained run.
'He's not a sit-and-sprint type so the wider barrier will give him enough room.''
Casual Connection is at $12 and stablemate So Dazzling $19 with TAB Fixed Odds for the Randwick staying race in which the Chris Waller -trained Ahuriri is the $3.80 favourite.
So Dazzling has had two runs back from a spell and Sargent is expecting a more competitive run now the mare gets onto her preferred heavy track surface.
Sargent is also considering a Brisbane carnival campaign for three-year-old filly Bearings if she runs well in the Chalouhi Handicap (1800m).
Bearings is also entered for a race at Newcastle on Saturday but the trainer confirmed she would start at Randwick in a bid to increase her rating enough to get into the Queensland Oaks field next month.
'If Bearings can win at Randwick we will take her up for the Oaks,'' Sargent said.
'She won her maiden at Goulburn then we had to go back from a wide draw at Kensington but she got home strongly. She's a promising staying filly.''

Football: Tony Popovic demands best from Socceroos

Socceroos captain Mat Ryan says the 'passion' of Australia's coach Tony Popovic will continue to inspire the national team ahead of next year's FIFA World Cup. The Socceroos only need to avoid a five-goal defeat in Wednesday morning's clash against Saudi Arabia in Jeddah to guarantee themselves qualification for a sixth successive World Cup. Popovic's appointment last September came at a difficult time for the Socceroos, who had made a poor start to the third round of AFC World Cup qualifiers with a 1-0 loss to Bahrain and a 0-0 draw with Indonesia. It led to the departure of long-time coach Graham Arnold, with Popovic given the task of getting the Socceroos' qualifying campaign back on track. The new coach, who played for the Socceroos at the 2006 World Cup, made an immediate impression on experienced goalkeeper Ryan, who was set to make his 100th appearance for the national team on Wednesday. Tony Popovic's 'passion' for the Socceroos has been recognised by his players. Picture:'I remember when they appointed him and watching his first press conference and interviews,' Ryan said. 'There was a few questions thrown at him about it being not the greatest time to be taking over as Socceroos head coach because of the circumstances we were in. 'We didn't start off the group in the best possible way and were perhaps behind the eight-ball. 'From memory of him answering the question, he said … 'Every moment to take over the national team, especially the Australian national team, is a great moment. I'm not buying into any of that. It's an honour. It's a privilege to be here, and I can't wait to get to work'. 'From that moment, I (thought) 'he's someone that's super passionate about not only football but Australian football', and it's just been on repeat since he's been in here. 'He demands the absolute maximum from each and every one of us, and that's exactly how it should be.' Ryan said Arnold and Ange Postecoglou had shown similar passion when they coached the Socceroos, as opposed to the tenures of the other two full-time coaches who had guided him at national team level – German mentor Holger Osieck and Dutchman Bert van Marwijk. 'With every manager we've had here in the national team, it's fair to say the Australian managers more than the foreign managers (have) got that extra special relationship with the jersey,' he said. 'Ange (and) 'Arnie' were also obviously very passionate about the national team, and that was portrayed through their actions and their words and speeches.' Konstas out Sam Konstas and Scott Boland have been left out of Australia's XI for the World Test Championship final against South Africa. Australia are big favourites to secure a second mace against the Proteas as the WTC final gets underway on Wednesday night Australian time at Lord's, but picking the team hasn't been straightforward. Series wins over India and Sri Lanka have posed some selection dilemmas for Australia, with the emergence of Konstas, Boland's consistent wicket-taking and Cameron Green's return from injury creating no shortage of headaches for head selector George Bailey. Konstas famously turned the series against India on its head with his blistering half century at the Boxing Day Test, playing ramp shots to Jasprit Bumrah's bowling. The 19-year-old didn't play on the tour of Sri Lanka and now he has been made to bide his time again. Marnus to open Australia have opted to back in Marnus Labuschagne to open the batting as Usman Khawaja's partner at the top of the order, leaving Konstas out of the has been struggling for form at Test level and County Cricket, with his last Test century coming against England in July 2023. Australian captain Pat Cummins backed in Labuschagne to perform, explaining the batter's contribution over the WTC cycle played a part in his selection. 'I think it's part of the factor. He is a somewhat known quantity (and) our selectors are probably showing that they're happy to … give someone an extra little run rather than pull the pin too early,' Cummins said. South Africa sees a crack South Africa have seized on Australia's gamble to open with Labuschagne, declaring there's an 'opportunity' to expose the defending champions. He will be Usman Khawaja fifth opening partner since David Warner's retirement, while Cameron Green has been elevated to No. 3 in his Test match return. With a swinging Dukes ball in the hand of Proteas superstar quick Kagiso Rabada, South African captain Temba Bavuma was hoping to exploit the new-look Australian top three. 'I think there is an opportunity there,' Bavuma said when asked about Australia's opening situation. 'I think the conditions as well, I believe, bring us into the game a lot. With the swinging ball, (it's) very different to Australian conditions. Different to South African conditions as well, so that definitely gives us an opportunity.'
